A Fighc on a Moving Car.
The following are the particulars of
a struggle for life on the top of a mov
ing freight train on the Mobile and
Ohio road on Wednesday night : Mr.
William B. Connolly wont up on the
top of the train after dark and found
thcso negroes stealing a ride. Ho asked -
ed them for their f-iro , and they re
plied that they did not intend to pay
jnything. Mr. Connolly told them
that if they had no money they must
liolp the enginoenor got off the train.
The negroes said they would got off
jrat , and started towards the engine ,
aa if to assist the engineer. From the
; ondcr ono of them secured a billit of
wood and came l > a"bk over the top of
ho train , and when Mr. Connolly had
lis back turned , standing near ono of
the brakes , "ho was struck across the
the tcmplo and knocked almost insen
sible.
Thou began u struggle for life on
top of the train , which was running
at the rate of thirty or thirty-five
milca an hour. The wounded and
stunned brakesman clutched the plank
walk and made a dcsparato resistance
to thp three brutes , who boat him and
hit his back , shoulders , and neck in a
horrible manner.
They repeatedly informed him that
they intended to kill him , and from
thu injuries inflicted it is evident that
to murder him was their intention.
They succeeded in getting hia right
hand loose and bit the thumb of that
hand while they endeavor to loosen
the other , so that they could throw
him off the train. After they had
beaten and bit him for eonio time the
whistle was blown far the State Line ,
and this fact , Mr. Connolly thinks , ia
all that saved Ilia life. When the
train slowed up for State Line the
negroes jumped off and escaped in the
darkness. The wounded man was
heard'groaning , and found on the top
of the train lying in a pool of blood.

The weather in northern Now York

a few cold days. Marcli was cold and
boisterous the first half , then mild to
the middle of April , when winter set

through May , Ice formed and the
fruit buds were killed and every , tender -
dor plant destroyed. Corn and pota
toes wore replanted and killed until
too late. Juno the coldest over
known ; frost , ice , or snow almost
every night , destroying every growing
thing that cold would kill. Snow fell

1815 , cost from $4 to $5 per bushel.
The first half of September was the
mildest of the scnson ; then it became
cold and frosty and continued through
October. November waa thp coldest
over known , cold and blustering ; snow
fell ao aa to make good sleighing.

season , but 1817 , waa a fine , fruitful
