The Nouimrpil grabs with avidity
every bit of press notices. Some of
the younger oditora have been induced
by n good wnoko and a cheery bit of
flutterj' to think that the schemes are

ptoyniled un to print notices written
for them , which notices , of course ,
have beer copied into Andorson'n or
gan , nnd carried about by the organs
of Anderson There is ono paper that
hasn't boon gobbled , but the organ
has not reprinted its notices. It does
not care to have the people road them.
The Daily Telegraph , of Atlantic , of
which Lafo Young is the editor , after
reviewing the situation and numerous
candidates , closes its editorial thus :
"But nil these men have been du
fcatcd of their rights , nnd the people
have been prevented giving these
names any consideration by the call
ing of the convention on a month's
notico. The convention could not
have boon called at the date named ,

Messenger ' editor , because his nnmo

880 , the frames of the first two houses
were raised , in anticipation of the im
mediate arrival of the first train on
ho now railroad which was being con-
tructod to this place from Hastings ,
n the main line of the 0. 1) . & Q. , as
branch of that road. The Rock Is-
and was building a branch also from
Ivccs on the main line of that road ,
8 miles north. The two roads now
orm a Junction hero and have a round
IOUBO and several men employed. The
isk of starting a town , under the pa-
ronngo of the "Q. " road , waa no great
enturo , for that company has nosiat-
d many struggling young villages in-
o activity and success. Stores , tra-
ling houses , shops , elevators , hotels ,
a newspaper and a bank followed , al-
uost as if by magic , and still they

Having settled in .western Iowa in
.840 , liavo had the opportunity of
witnesses the rise and progress of the
county for thirty-fix years. When I
came hero , aa you know , Iowa was a
.orritory , nnd this part WUB culled the
Pottawatlamio purchase find not sur
veyed. Indiana were as thick as
j 'lasty ' pudding , but wcro not half as
desirable to take for supper. I not-
; led on my present homo in the fall of
1850 , and have been under the neces-
nity of watching BOO red nkinu from
Nebraska at once , but those times are
and wo are now under the ncooa-
lity of watching the white trash. It
may be wo have made by the ox-

The firstrailroad survey party across
the state came through my land which
worried mo very much ns I had never
seen one. I feared them more than I
did the Indians for I know if it was
built there would bo no scaring it off
as I did the Indians and wolves , but
as luck would have it it was built , but
1 have changed my rnind somewhat in
regard to railroads uinco wo got ac
quainted. It is-rathor n good thing
in its place , that is , if you can keep it
in its place.
The early settlers of Western Iowa

came near starving at that , and Home
