man , ono of the fir t settlers of our
town and is kuown throughout the
county as n straightforward nnd
thorough business man , nnd no doubt
will bo ouccestful in the lumber busi
ness ns ho has boon in the h.uthviuo

deserves.
The location of a gnat mill at this
place is now a settled fact , nnd by the
h'rat day of October Stroinsburg will

tion with two run of burrs , costing not
less than § 7,000. This will supply a
long-foil wnnt for the furmeri of our
county nnd will bo appreciated by
thorn.
Our building boom f-till continues
nnd is creatly lotnrded for want of
mechanics to push the work forward.
Mr. J. Bosttomo , our brick maker , in

teen thousand brick per < lay , mid ntill

Stromsburg wants moro dwelling

state capital.
Judge Post isnow dispensing justice -

BUKNA VI.STA , Ool. , May 1C. A
company of ua hare made a trip to
this point from Pueblo , and a few
notes cannot be amiss ; but ono is ap
palled by the effort to describe the
marvelous aconerjr between hero and
Canon City. Probable there ii not
another hundred miles of road on this
earth which prs ont such wonderful
bowildaririg icincry. First comes
Grand Option , which seems to hare
been cleft through the monntnins in
anticipation of thojo luttur day
Lriumphd. This awful chasm mak it
posaiblu for a railroad to ponolrate
this wonder laud , and open a now
world to health , wealth and ploainro.
Grand C non has few peers for wild
ind ragged grandeur. It is as if u
migUly plou hiharo of omnipotence
had clclt a WAT through solid rlbi ot
granite , and piled th m 2,000 , hot
liigh on either lido. To a dweller of
the pralrlo land , comlag from tha
great stretches of level country two
thousand miles east , to hi suddenly
whirled into such amazing contrasts ,
the revulsion is tremendous. Sumo
fearful commotion lias wrought
these upheavals. The strata stand
on end , wide fissures open ;
hero are ( loop , dark recesses , before
you ; there in tlio distance soonis to be
the walls of old cathedrals , and those
the battlements of old castles. Now
thn reaka etrctch away into the sky ,
mid again you ride under towering
clifla , beside you thunders the Arkan
sas river , foaming with rage ; about
the center comes thu lloyjil Gorge ,
the crowning wonder , whose towering
wall * , rising over 2,000 feet , look ut
each other acroes a narrow rift which
has cleft them to the bottom.Vo
cannot conceive of the power which
has now twisted and distorted these
eternal rocks nnd heaved thorn like
clouds in such wild fantastic shapes.
If one wants to see variety , such as he
never dreamed of , crowded into fan
tastic shapes beyond the fancy of the
most daring imagination , let him take
this mountain road. No ono could
drcnm of these endless permotation
of cliango of shnpo and variety will
which the great builder has ndornci
this part of his work Once through
the canon now views bmSk upon us
no Ions plefisinp ,
This whole vnlleymust bo n painter's
paradise. Either sidn is lined with
mountains , nnd the various winding ! )
of the river nnd the track give yoi
constantly cheering views , so grant
and varying no bruth could do jus
tice to thorn. As you atcond the val
ley by steep grades , the mountains are
higher , nnd nt ( his point they itro
snow crowned.
I do not know where n finer site fern
n Rummor resort could bo selected
Iloro is n largo valley , intersected by
purliiu brooks of the coolest ami
purest wnter. Tha sight of Ihoso pure
streams is n rest for tlio oyea\\henoiio
has bfon stopping for n time nmid the
drifting sands of the American Sahara.
In the atroets are grand pines the
Pondorosu , with massive trunks ol
drooping branches nnd for the nt-
Lractivcmss of the place it is to bo
hoped that they will bo spared where
over they stand , either in lawn or
street , The town could show com
mendable enterprise in laying out
, heir streets nnd lining thorn with
Toes. Thcso nro fostered by irrign-
.ion nnd liltie streams of purest na-
or on their tmtsion nil ever the town.
But my pen is powerless to depict
.ho grandeur of this scene which
Ionia in this summer paradise. On
one side n massive mountain with
rough grnnite sides , rises thousands
of feet. Nature has covered the rough
deformity with a mantle of evergreens.
Look down the valley , and snow
leaks hem you in. At the south the
nassivo puabs of Hnrvnrd , Princeton ,
Tale , snow crownid , grand in their
mp sing majesty , loolc down upon
'ou. The whole valley is hemmed in
with mountains , nnd from their cool
ummit come the gentle breezes , to
omper the heated air. Six miles
rom here uro the Hot Sulphur
prings , a retort for invalids. A fine
end leads out to it , nnd n comforta-
> lo hotel awaits the iiualid.
If there is n moro pleasant resort
or titud men and woman I hnvo nov-
r seen it. Hero is nn oxhaustlcss
leld for , exploration. Beyond nro
nines which open t lit ir vast treasure- * ,
nd in the mountains nro the grandest
oins , the coolest woods , nnd the nov-
r vnrying wnndom of this strange
lountain lai.d. Tlio time ia not fnr
istant when the residents of the
irairio states will leave the hot
> 1aittt of Eummor for these
eel retroata , and for n time forgot thu
area of life , in oommuniug with this
tratigo nconery. Of course for steady
are nnd porinanont homos there is
nothing like our rich prairies , but if
rou wnnt a change , if you want to es-
ipe cue , como and hide for a while
mong thwo Lternul fnntncsaos. The
ity is building up rapidly. I nm on-
eying both the courteuy and hoapitnl-
ty 0. S. Jlill , who represents the
own real ( .state interjits here. The
own in its early history was noted for
: s roughness , but this primitive stage
mn paaied away. Ono of the largo
oligious bodies IB now in session here
nd they receive warm welcome.
Churches nrc patronized , nnd the pub-

iredict for it n nolid prosperity. And
