CHICAGO UOh'BT.
CHICAGO , May 1'J.
Preston , Keau & Co. , bankers , report
That the opening of the Chicago Stock
Exchange has given new activity to the
matkct hero and stronger pr eca for all lo
cal securities.
There has been during the past week a
depressed feeling regarding government
bonds , aud the price has been at a stand
still. The latest quotations to-day beinj ,
almost identical with those of lint Friday
or the 4 and 4J par cent , bonds , but i to j
per cent lower for the extended D'0 , It is
apprehended that if the bill now being dii
cussed in congress extending the charters
of the national banks ! i3ll pc * * without
radical change from the recommendations
of the committee , the long term bonds o :
the government issues will surely feel the
effects , and make substantial advance in
price.
The market to-day is quiet aud dull , tbo
, only activity displayed being in local no-
curities , which since the opening of the
new stock exchange have been imbued with
new life.
Government bonds ara quiet at name
rates as yesterday , and are in little ilo
mand.
Municipal bonds and prairie , state and
county securities are bting inquired for
and meet with ready sale at prices to iiel
4J to 5 per cent , per annum
Uiutera exchange la in demand at fiom
