The events of the week in financial cir
cled were less impottant than for n Icng
timepaBt. Money was eosv , nearly all
biulnets on call having been done at 2@4

Foreign exchange firm throughout.
Government bonds opened strong for
long data issues and weak for extended
bond * , but the former afterwards declined
J , while the latter advanced n ( ractlonat
the close. The n hole market wa * firm ,
with demand chiefly for fours , which re
covered Borne.
Hallway and miscellaneous speculation
wan very dull , and the volume of business
smaller than for any previous day of the
year. The market was weak in the
earlier dealings , declined 1@3 $ per cent
for lending stocks , but later oo became
firm and recovered part of the decline.
Changes in a few of the tpecialtlos wore
more important , the Manhattan Elevated
advanced 5 per cent and the Richmond ft
Danville stock declining 4J@10 per cent ,
larger classes of speculators were prac
tically out of the market during the week ,
most of them having withdrawn from
active speculation pending further devel
opments ia regard to crops nnd exports of
gold.

market again to-day , and fluctuations as a
rule were within narrow range. A strong
tone prevailed throughout and closing
quotations were about the highest to-day.
Sales aggregated a little over 150,000
shares and the stocks moat actively dealt
i in were Jersey Central , Lake Shore ,
I Western Union , Lackawanna & Western.
I Denver & Jlio Grande , IS orthwestern ,
i Northern Pacific and Missouri Pacific.

week's volume , And vt&ues as a rule remain
about the same.

experienced on account of the very cold ,
unseasonable weather of the paat week ,

There WM an especially good move
ment in the staple llnei of groceries
Including sugar , rice , syrup * , canned
goods , dried fruits , and meats of all kindf ,

an advance of | c over last week's figure * ,
Dry goods , carpet ? and leather were in
moderate demand , and a fair trade in
druRp , p.MnU and oils at current prices.
There was n fairly active demand tor
iniildlug material of all kinds at quota-

The movement in hldcr , tallow rind wool
liai been light at unchanged prices.
Horned stock receipt ! not reported , but
they continue moderate , and no material
change as regards the general character of

Hogs continue to arrive in fair quantities
for the season 30 ctrs reported and are
in good demand , packc B paying SO 00 for
good.
The flour movement is better and prices

Lemons are in liberal supply and firm.
An advance is anticipated as warm weather
approaches.
The stock of old potatoes is light , and
demand also at quotations.
New potatoes are In fair supply ; de
mand normal on account ot the price
