A SURPRISED SUPERINTENDENT
The Union Pnciflo Mon Qlvo J.
T. Oliirk a Biff Bend-OfF ,
Kantmomo Tontlmoninl front the
Boys to Tliolr JJo .
For some pnst it lias been an open
secret to n select few that provioua to
tlio departure of Mr. J. T. Clark , for
years past the general superintendent
of the Union Pacifio railway , who re
signs that position to accept the same
position with the Chicago , Milwaukee
nnd St. Paul road , his many friends
would take occasion to giro himaaub-
stantial eouvonir of their oatoom nnd
regard.
More recently the matter KM made
known to n liirgcr circle and and op
portunity given nil the boya from
Omaha to Ugden to participate in the
pleasure of being ono of the
donors of the handsome gift selected
for the occasion , a magnificent piano.
The responses wore so general and the
contributions so munificent that the
conimittco found themselves with a
small fortune on their hands be
fore the occasion for its use
arrived. Last evening was fixed upon
for the occasion , niul nt about 8
o'clock Bomo thrco hundred persons
assembled at the Union Pacific depot ,
and , being joined by the Union Pacifio
band , inarched to the residence of
Mr. Clark , on ono of the hills of
South Omaha.
The object of these maneuvers had
mcatiwhilo boon involved oil * to the
house of n friend to dine , and in his
absence the piano was smuggled into
tliOihoiiao and Bet up , and upon tho.
arrival of the party and music referred
to everything was in shape for the
surprise.
Mr. Clark came out from the neigh
bors to BCD what n band was doing up
in that vicinity , nnd was in titno to
BCO his house invaded , and hero a ray
of intelligence burst in upon him.
When , however , ho entered the houso.
nnd saw the grand piano there await
ing him , nnd the crowd eager to pay
their rcopcola to the retiring ruler of
the groa ; railway , ho was well nigh
speechless , and walked about the now
article of household furniture wivh as
much surprino nnd admiration aa a
little boy with n rod wagon.
The superintendent was unable
to respond to the presentation ad
dress , and Judge Thins ton actedaa
his proxy.
At the conclusion of the very inter
esting event at the house the whole
parly won invited to adjourn to Stand
ard hall , where tlio balance of the
evening was upont in the plcasautosl
manner imaginable.
