The plnzas do torzos receive ng
much nttontion in Spain as the agri
cultural fairs have at homo and their
performances are even better at tended.
Thcro are ono hundred of thorn Bcat-
tcrcd throughout the kingdom. The
exhibitions besin ordinarily in April
and they end with the first cold
weather of Novombor. At every city
where I stopped in my travels through
Spain I was invited to visit the plaza
do torroa na naturally ns to BOO the
most interesting monument or the
best art decoration , and I hoard nn
immensity of explanation and miscellaneous -
lanoous talk about thorn ,
The torres buildings in Spain nro in
their general ahapo and area not unlike -
like the amphitheatre of the St , Louia
fair grounds , but they tower thrco
and four stories high , nro dcoper from
the inner to the outer walls of the
audience circle , and moro solidly and
durably constructed of brick and
stone. In that of Madrid , distant an
easy hour's drive from the city , the
entire first story , including n protnon-
ado and two or moro broad rows of
the lower seats , is built of massive
block etono. the upper walls being
brick , and all very heavy and expen
sive. The cost of such an edifice at
homo , with its necessary out houses
and high-walled yards , would hardly
fall short of n million dollars maybe
mnchmoro. _ At the time of my visit ,
it being out of season , a troop of
boys were in the arena undergoing
exorcise for some sort of exhibition
m ado up of bull-calf , foot-racing , etc. ,
to take place the following week.
They were dressed in fantastic cos
tumes and being drilled in a grotesque
march. They gave their instructor
some trouble by their boisterous
laughter and by-play , intended in
good part , as it seemed , for the super
intendent of the plaza , with a few
picadors and other hnbituoa of the
establishment , stood a piece off enjoying -
joying the perplexities of the master.
Outsidotho amphitheatre building
there are shown the high-walled bull
pens with their sliding gates and their
stationary ladders for the escape of
keepers when the refractory animals
turn on thorn , as they often do. Ill-
aide the building , under the lower
audience circle , there are compart
ments for service and attendants. Ono
room is stored with flags , saddles and
other horse gear , while that next it is
a rado hospital ward equipped with
cote , " etc. , fort'tho unfortunates at
tained in the chances of the ring com
bats. But the accidents rarely hap
pen , it is added , and the ward is sel
dom used. From the open arena the
royal logo in pointed out in g.n upper
dior , and lower down that of the mu
nicipal officer , who presides over and
directs the performance. The bettor
places are all taken for the season , a
logo or box in the plaza do torres
beint ; as essential to the beau monde
of Madrid as the box at the opera.
The rates of admittance range from
OOo. to 81.SO each. But nobody is
kept out by f.rice. The vast edifice
will comfortably scat IS,000 people
and the exhibitions are said to bo
always overcrowded.
The property belongs to the city and
is leased out in terms of five and six
years. The lessee hires the matador ,
and ho in turn his aaciatants. The
fiRhting corps is called "quadrilla , "
conformably to the four parts > of the
sport , to-wit : A matador , whoso pay is
often SGOO a performance , two pica
dors , two bandilloras , two capeadoria ,
and , onoccasion , ono puntillero.
These assistants take their chances of
life ordinarily at SIC the performance.
In the prqgresa of. an entertainment
the gentle players divide their parts
thus. The firct pair on horseback
wake up the wondering terre to an un
derstanding of .his insetting sacrifice
by pricking him with lances ; the second
end couple afoot puncture and mad
den him etill moro with barred arrows ;
third , the-matador , armed with bis oz-
executionnl sword , give the death
blow. 1C-ho fail , then the puntillero
steals up behind the wounded and en
feebled brute and finidhos him. Fif
teen minutes only a'roiBllowcd by nil
to each part of the flay. But th
limit is fcooly removed by the presi
dent , who , for each extension of time ,
waves his * vtito handfcerohiof , whoi
the druraccer and trumpeter , opposite
aound the signal of indulgence ,
Usually the crazed bull.gorea throe tc
five horses in the cours&of a fight. Th
people of Valencia are-ctill doscribin ,
with great glee the prowess of a franti
Jiimal , which last summer slew th
incredible cumber of ton horses bofon
the busy pkaders had bled and weakened
onod him sufficiently to 4rust and turn
him over to the moro delicate surgery
of their suoaossor * the bandilloros ,
In ono Dcspoct the Spanish bul
fight omits -spark of poetic humani
ty. The hproes used are worn out old
hacks. Witt us they would bo doom
ed to the ignominious traces of the
street cars , ehing out their wretched
existences unnoticed and itinhonorod ,
Whereas , under the peninsular sys
tarn , being exalted to the arena , they
are treated to a bright glimpno o : '
quick heroics , enjoy the honor of bo
ine cheered by 2,000 huinui throats
and last , in a closing agony of glory !
are dragged out with hurried consid'
aratbn at the heels of two ntules. -

piece of machinery contains n strong ,

tube in the staff , gradually raises the
subject to n horizontal position. There
that tube is thrown out of gear and
another takes up the motion , carrying
the subject around in a complctn

Is thrown out and the third

At a combat hold in Madrid on a
great holiday , two or three years ago ,
when the amphitheatre was crowded
to its utmost , the bull had boon turn
ed over by the bandilloros to Lagartijo ,
who , for some reason not at first ap
parent , prolonged his play unusually ,
lie touched his brute enemy repeat
edly with the point of his sword ,
waved the rod flag proplcxingly against
his very eyes , and ever and again
skipped back and forward , and hither
and thither , until the bull had be
come fairly crazed with worry , pain
and rage. The matador had at last
described a great circle , and stopped.
The bull stortod madly and in a
straight line for him , when Lagartijo ,
by a sudden inspiration a mesmeric
intuition of power , likely throw ono
foot firmly .in advance , placed his ling
quietly out of sight behind him with
his loft hand , and , holding his sword
aloft with the right , stood immovable
like a statue of defiance , awaiting the
onset. The stillness of death fell
upon the great multitude. It was an
act of madness. But the man's in
stinct was true the brute came only a
few yards further , when again sight
ing the motionless brave , ho seemed
to stagger uncertainly , and then actu
ally fell forward on both knees in his
endeavor to stop ! Such a shout as
wont up next from the breathless ,
watchful multitude the like of it was
never hoard botoro , nor has it rang
since from the plaza do torros.

Provide lor Short Food.
The provident dairyman , whether
milk raiser , butter or cheese-maker ,
will soon bo putting in some kind of
forage crop to help' the short pastur
age that b almost sure to come about
the first of July. Wo urge attention
to this matter now. It is full feed
that makes the full bag. Ono of the
best -crops to sow for this purpose is
oats , barley and peas , a mixture of
one-third each. This crop can bo put
in as soon as the land b dry enough
to work. The ground should haVe a
liberal dressing of maauro or fertilizer ,
spread on after ploughing and well
worked into the soil with the harrow ,
&nd then seeded at ike rate of three
bushels per acre. Tlio Canada pea is
best for this crop , but wo have had
good success with the marrowfats and
advancer. Put in the crop , and if
not needed as help for the posture it'
can bfa cut and cured for hay. If the
land is highly manured and the crpp ,
is cut before the seed is formed , or
just before blossoming , it will contin
ue to grow the same as grass and will
produce another crop. The peas will
not amount to anything in the sorond
growth , but the oats and barley will
cover the ground and make a heavy
second crop. This mixture is ono of
the best of our foraqo crops. >

ing gained by boin first in the rfiol

soon become stunted , and do no
grow as fast an others put out later ,
and not until the ground is waem ,
These go right on without stopping ,
and generally coiue into use be for
those which it was thought wo&li
boat them. It is worse than useless
to sot out plants or cow seed until the
ground is warm enough to cause them
to germinate or grow ,
It in rather remarkable that thl
fact is not moro generally recognized
than it is , as most farmers know that
it is true of cern. That which is nut
in very early often gets yellow , and in
other ways show evidences of sickli
neas ; and no ono , unless in very high ,
