V THE DAlLf BEE-rtlESDAV MAY 9 , 1882 , SANTA FE SCRIP FRAUDS Dakota- Flooded With Wile Oat Oertifloatos , and Great Excitement Reported. The SiIionl * Concern tlio Croobod JJnslness. St Paul Pioneer Press. SIOTJX CITY , IB , , Ikfay 5. A Unilo States tiotcctivo , who nas boon work ing up the fraudulent aurvoyor'a Ian scrip , to-day pave your reporter eom points. The dcalora who have bear bit on the bogus Santa Fo scri bought through John D. Cameron , o Burt & Miller , No. 5 , corner of Fift ! and Chestnut streets , Bt. Louis , A representative of n commercial agonc ; visited No. 5 several times , but coulc only find an office boy who said th proprietor would bo there soon , Bur & Miller urn evidently myths. Cameron oren was arrested at Sionx Falls yes iorday and taken to Kankton to-dny , and the government at iornoy will try to have him sent to St. Louis. The charge is an nccom jdico in presenting forged certificates of deposits , the land acrip being in of feet n certificate of deposit issued b } an authorized government depositor o by the assistant treasurer of Ohicagc or San Franciico. The forged ecri ] purported to bo signed by P. T Eckor , assistant United States treasurer uror at Santa Fo. There in no sucl government official as assistant treasurer uror at Senta Fo. The gonulno Santt To scrip , of which those is a llttlo in the market , is mostly signed by B. J Falan , who is acting cashier of the JFirst National bank of Santa Fo , TUB BOOUR SCRIP all purports to bo issued in September bor , October and November of 1881 The certificates of transfer that ao company the scrip are bungling look ing The principal defects are tha lack of the legal number of witnesses , failure to describe the range as onai or west , and that nil the aiqimturos appeared in the name handwriting. Besides the $25,000 mentioned m yesterday's telegrams from -Grand Forks , D. T. , there is said to bo $5- 000 with the First National bank of Yankton , and moro than that with Me- Konna & Scougall and the First Na tional bank of Sioux Falls , and eomo offered at this city , bub not bought , and dealers in legitimate scrip noti fied. It is estimated that there exists $150,000 to $250,000 of fraudulent scrip , but how much of this has ROIIO into the hands of Bottlers and how much remains in the possession of dealers , is only to bo guessed. Sur veyors' sariri is used the same as money in paying for pre-omptions , and by its use $8 to $12 can bo saved in proving up on quarter sections. EXCITEMENT AT GKiND FORKS. / GitAND FOHKS , D. T , May5. Eirly Thursday nighl great excitement - mont was created in this city by the arrival of a telegram of the United States land officj from Commissioner MoFarland , brdonng that no survey or's land scrip issued at Santa Fo , N. M. , bo received in payment for final proof of claims. For a while real OH- , tate men 'woro ' rushing hither and thither , and great waa the alarm. The telegram and Daily Herald offices wcro crowded with anxious men eager to catch on reliable infer mation. It was learned that the pro prietor of Tho.Daily Herald , Qoorgo " \Vitmhiphad several mtm out loooking up information and they found that the cause assigned for the refusal to receive - coivo the scrip alleged to bo fraudu lent in the certificates of deposit , on whioti the scrip is issued. That these frauds have existed for a long time all oflicials and intelligent men who are cognizant with the Now Mexican land business have been aware of. It is a fact not generally known outaido of interested circles that thousands of dollars of the Now Mexican scrip had boon shipped to Dakota for dispona ) , and us fast an brought hero had boon used in proving up. An cxtromoly low estimate of the Santa Fo scrip in the Grand Forks land district alone places it at $20,000. This moans that there is probably THODHAND 07 COKES OK RED KIVEIt LAND in thin district , to which the supppflod owners believe they have a clear title from the government , whereas those deeds are worthless , and they are in the position of holdWs of claims who have not proven up. The number of settlers in Dakota who have proved up by the aid of Santa Fo surveyors' scrip is largo. Many proof foes in the Grana Forks district have boon made in this scrip. The records show page after page of solid Santa Fee scrip payment with hardly a cash entry. One-third of the deeded faming land in this district , and presumably of all the land districts of .Dakota , if not held ' by invalid dneda there at tj I least is n cloud resting over the title , which will bo fearful draw * back to poor settlers ; and opona the way to serious hardships to those who have , as they supposed , complied with the law and moved with their deeds in their pockets to other places , under the impression that their patent was a valid ouo. It is estimated that from the 810,000 to $25,000 of this crip is in the hand * of speculators in Grand.Forks alone , the market valui of which will take a fearful fall if all reports are true. But to night seine of the special attorneys and real estate men have come to the conclu sion that there is moro alarm than there is foundation for and predict that no one will bo singed. Howovur no one will feel perfectly safe till ofll. oial information is received , The wires will be open all night. \ > r Willow Fence Posts. The agricultural editor of The Clarksvills Star , writes as follows on this subject : Having frequently used white willow fence posts to replaoa those that have become decayed , we have found that when put into the ground in a green atato a willow post , four or five inches through will last three or four years or when peeled and well seasoned will last six years. For a bwb wire fence wo prefer u live fence post. Wo have had such posts in ground for past two seasons , and enjoyed a foeliog of satisfaction every ttnio wo happened to pass tliu fence , as wo do not expect to bo obi liged to dijj it up every five yeurv , , * od mot ; it. For the iuforruatipn ot thote who wish to not out a line of live fence potti , wo will give our way of doing it , " * We commeacedj by plowing out & ditch by throwing out two furrows t < the right and loft on the line of thi proposed fence , ihon wo cut willott poles , about three inches in diamotoi nnd six and one-half feet long , shnrp oning the thinnest end to a Bmootl point , taking euro not to loosen the bank in driving , ns the success in gnt ting it to take root depends on keeping the bark intact. To avoid such a mis hap wo have found it best to open the hole with n crow bar. Bcforo driving , the top of the stake should bo rounded with a sharp axe or drawing knife so as to not looser the bark or split the post. It shonlc bo driven down two foot , which wll ! leave four and a half feet above the rround. Mulch around the posts with coarse manure needful to a sura and rapid development of buds and roots , In about n wock numerous budi will start the whole length of the post , which should bo rubbed off once r week , leaving from six to eight ehooti to grow at the top. Without this precaution caution the drain upon the sap will be too great , and there bding as yet bul very little root to maintain a large number of shoots , the nap bccomei prematurely exhausted , nnd the posl becomes a dead , dry stick. The second season the buds may be allowed to grow , and barbed wire ma } bo stapled on with long staples , ol which there are two sizes sold long and short , for soft and hard posts. Such a fence , when once well rooted , is an ornament to the farm , ia far moro durable than a rigid post , will never got out of line , will not heave out by frost , will stand moro strain from unruly animals on account of iU elasticity , and afford a grateful shade to stock during the summer , and sift out all the keenest particles of a north wester during the autumn , anH ii properly trimmed , making a lasting and handsome fence. Taking1 Illu Word for It. Detroit Free I'rtsi. A Randolph street saloon keeper who had long boon bothered by a dead-beat , tapped him on the ahoul- dor the other day and said : "My friend , I don't want you hero any moro. " "Don't you ? I can hardly believe it , jut of course I shall take your word 'or it. I suppose you'll sot out the drinks nn this sad occasion ? " "Oh , yes. Walk right up. " The saloonist had taken some forty- rod and added a liberal aipply of cay- ono popper , dashed in BOIUO vinegar md poured in enough molasns to make ho drink slip down. The boat pour ed out a stiff dram and tossed it off vithout stopping to breathe , and as 10 sat down the glass and lot the tears courao down hia bronzed ohooka ho asked ; "Do I weep ? " "I should rather think you didl" "Well , sir , I want you to distinctly understand that I'm not weeping on iccount of any trifle that has occurred lore not by a jug full ! My omo- ion is occasioned by hearing of the death of an aunt. Good-day , sir. " ROUGH ON KATS. " Clean out rats , mice , roaches , flics , nttf , bedbap , skunks , chipmunks , goph- r .
