The name attached to this invita
tion WAS that oi a well known Fifth
avenue modisto , and n Mercury re
porter , desirous of ascertaining in
what connection skeletons were
tnado valuable in the business
of enhancing woman's charms ,
called on the advertiser. The servant
etatod that she was rngagod , and
ushered him into n reception room.
Across the hall was a door marked
"Private Oflico. " and the reporter
speedily became awaropf an anything
but friendly conversation being con
ducted on the other side. Finally the
door opened and a young man came
out , followed by the woman. "Very
well , " said the young man in angry
tones , "this is the fifth time you vo
pot mo hero , and it will bo the last.

the reporter his business. When ho
stated it she flu hed and replied , hesitatingly <

wouldn't unless I took it at the rate

month if I could got hold of their
skeletons. "
"But what do you call skeletons ? "
demanded the reporter. " 'Iho extra
books , " replied the young man. "See
hero , now. There are few dress
makers in Now York with any style
that do a straight business. They
can't. Their customers won't have it.
There's moro money lent than there
is spent on customers' dresses , and
when a bill fur a couple of thousand
is made out you can bet your life that
halfot it is clear cash with interest. In
these hero skeletons , " said the young
manlimprcssiuely , touching the books
with his forefinger , "thuru are ever
$75,000 entries and less than $30,000
of them are square business. The
rest are loans at 5 per cent , a month
that the husbands have to pay for
along with the clothes their wives
wear. There is ono lady in this book
whoso spring bill will be ever $5,000 ,
and less than $2,000 is for dressus.

making is only another name for usury
then ? " "I mean to say that many
drcHsmakors in Now York lend money
on interest to customers. That's where
the skeletons come from. The skele
tons are sncrot books of the house.
On one page of them is entered the
actual indebtedness of the customer
for dresses. On the opuositu page are
tlio loans. Every month the books of
the business uro made up from thcso
skeletons , the money loaned
being charged to the dress
making account. See hero. There
isn't a full name in this whole book ,
you notice , but each amount is headed
with a number , a letter , or a Homo
combination of tlmin. This number ,
letter , star or combination corresponds
with Bomo name on the other books ,
and nobody's got the key to them but
the man who keeps the books. I'm
the man who kept the books up there ,
and I've { * ot thu key nnd thoskelotons
too. So if I don't get what she owes
mo there'll bo trouble about the spring
Hottloment. But , moro than that ,

"What is the black-book ? " "Tho
credit register. There's a system
among the dross makers of keeping a
sort of registration of customers who
are bed pay. It was started about
ten years ago by a big modisto on
University Place. Whenever a lady
ran up an account and refused or
failed to settle it the modisto ontorcd
her name in a memorandum book , and
sent written slips detailing her in
debtedness to the diilcient other big
dress makers hero , They were
warned in this viny to look out for
her , and in return would warn her
of their own bad customers. After
a couple of years these names
made up along list. About five years
back , when the- business of lending
money commenced , this list became
very valuable , for it saved the dressmakers -
makers from heavy loss. There are
some awell names in it , I can toll you ,
women who are rich enough to buy
you and mo out with a year's income ,
and who yet have to pay cash for ovoiy
bit of ribbon they buy. But * vomon
are not the only onea in the black-
book. There are pages devoted to
men , too , For instance : You are in
the habit of kicking at paying your
wife's bills. Very well. You nro en
tered as a kicker , and an extra charge

list who are regularly charged with

our house who hasn't really
paid a bill for years , and
vet wo have made thousands through

books as regularly as the Accounts
