A short time ago Mr. Jamoa Moran was a witness in aomo case in the dis trict court , and in duo course of time presented his certificate at the county clerk's oflico to have the num duo him allowed by the county oommiasionora He called aovor.il times , nnd the matter tor not yet having boon acted upoi was told to coino again. Finally tie transferred , or assigned the ainouni to Unrnoy Shantion , who advanced liim the money , of which ho said lie was in pressing need. Thou Mr. Shannon began making his calls , and ho too grow tired unil accused the county clerk of trying to withhold the money trom him , although the fact waa , the clerk wai in Denver und his deputies assured him that they alone were handling the affairs in the oflico. The claim waa allowed on Saturday and the warranl duly drawn. Tuesday Moran appeared again and stated that ho would take the warrant , as Barney had got tired ol waiting and bothered htm until he had gone and raised the amount for him. Ho was told that ho could only get it on a written order from Mr. Shannon , and after a short absence lie came back with what was pur ported to bo an order and was written in pencil , when ho WAS given his money. Yesterday Mr , Shannon came up for the warrant again , and pronounced nouncod the order a forgery. Ho threatened to have Moran arrested but had not done so at last accounts Parties wishing Carriages or JJug giea will do well to examine Lininge & Metcalf ( Co.'fl large stock before buying , , m&o&w-lw THE IRISH QUESTION. rrvlluro of the Acts of Relief Dovlsod Iby Mr. Gladstone. To the Editor of the fief. It is not my intention to nbuso the nurtcsio extended by your paper to myself porsohally , na well as to the auao which I have at heart , nnd horeforo I shall bo brief as possible. Your comments upon the Into land cnpuo convention , nro ns usual , on- enraging , and you seem to appreciate ho sentiments uf that body , particu- arly in ita criticism of a system of and tenure , "which hai boon ropudi- itod by every other country but Jroat lltitnin. " Hut you say in the text sentence : "It is unfortunate lint in the aamo breath such hostility a expressed to the flrat British gov- irnmoiit which boa over honestly lought to reform the land laws. " In i discussion of the present Irish crisis , hero must nocoasarily bo a eront llvorgonco of opinion , oven between .ho Iriab nnd thoao who nro dosiroua .0 bo friendly to their cause. Hence t must oo acknowledged that the poole ) lo of Ireland , nro to say the least , jhsscd , nnd perhaps reluctant to re ceive 'concoasiona , which nro offered in good faith. Now , for the preaont at least , I will hy aside nil rancor , nnd view Gladstone's nets in the light of an impartial observer than a par tisan Irian rebel , His church disestablishment bill , tiia tenant-right bill of 1871. and his last land act , are the principal , and in deed the only efforts Gladstone has over put forth towards the ameliora tion of Ireland's destitute condition. The first two were nn absolute ncccs sity , forced upon the administratior of Mr. Gladstone by n combination ol circumstances over which ho had no control. They were issues which , like Bancho's ghost , "would nol down. " Four-fifths of the Irish people were Catholic , and yet thcywcro com pelled to support a church by direct taxation , whoso tonota they did not maintain , and whose government was oppressive. The world pointed ita finger of. scorn upon the ilif.xmoua principle which foatuicd the "Irish church. " Emphatic agita tion at homo and uncomplimentary criticism from abroad \voro heard dur ing the previous tory administration. House Gladstone \vns forced to face the music when ho came into power , Moreover , the Fenian troubles of 180 ( and 18G7 , and a dread of their recur rence , hastened the abolition of the church , ns well UR the passage of the 1871 land act. The ungrateful Irish therefore were not in the least thank ful for thcso liberal ( ? ) concessions. But subsequent events proved thai the land act of 1871 was moro than a farce it was a nullity. It did not re move a single hardship it did nol benefit n single individual. Back- rents , evictions , emigration and wanl were just as rife as formerly. The Irish , always suspicious of England's good intentions , received Gladstone's effort at redress passively and indif ferontly. If the premier had eve : had any hope that his measure woulc bo of practical good to the Irish tenant - ant farmers , that hope must have been rudely dissipated in 1870 , when fam ine , loan and. gaunt , made his appear arico'liirthat lovely but misgoverned ialo. ialo. And And now wo come down to Glad stone's latest and greatest act. The readers of Tin : Bun know that the land league was the product of certain factors which preceded it , nmoni which were Hia threatened famine . have mentioned , and the system o landlordism which took from the people plo all that their industry produced and then loft them to starve. Midi aol Davitt pronounced Irish rent nn "immoral tax. " Ho and his col leagues exhorted the people to "lioli the harvest" that is , not to do as their fathers had done in ' 40 and ' 47 pay the last farthing of rent , and thoi no into their desolate cabins to starve That unselfish man the greatest man of his race , that same Davitt said hero before an Omaha audience that it waa not the munificiont donations sent out from America in 1870 which saved the people of Ireland Irom starvation. Liberal as they were , and characteris tic of the great philanthropic hoar ! of America , they were but a "drop in the bucket. " The people hold the harvest and ate it. The landlords got none of it. Passjyorosistancq became the weapon Jn the brands ofan , other wise helpless people' , and again JrisI grievances came to the ears of the British parliament. The quostiot must coma up. The landlords looked with awe upon "Hold the harvest , ' and "Rent is an immoral tax. " They insisted that the commons take the matter in hand. The commons did. It was compelled to do so. But did Gladstone contemplate abolishing u system , "which has boon repudiated hy every other country but Great Britain ? * ' Not at all. His land act seeks to perpetuate the infamous system , But it is a failure received from the standpoint of the landlord , as well as the tenant. The former cannot conceal his disgust , the latter his derision , The land commission and their sub-commissions , working with all the despatch that human [ eniiis can devise , could not in the next fifty years adjudicate the many cased broughtboforo them. Moreover the L'xuonso involved would bo moro than the land is worth. Gladstone's land uot is valuable only in so far as that it is a confession of his weakness to grapple with a question which he lias not the power nor the willingness to settle. I cannot close my communication without referring to Gladstone's great est and noblest effort his coercion act. His land act and coercion act are co-oxistant. Anticipating the recalcitrant disposition of the .Irish , ho put the coercion act in operation to force the land pill down the throats of the people. A brutal police has unlimited power. The "resources of civilization" are so prolific in the brain of Mr. Gladstone that a person bos only to bo "reasonably suspected" so that ho may bo immured in prison for an unlimited period , without trio ) , without cau&o. Certainly if anything were wanting to make Irish grateful , it is found in this beneficent act. Your readers have seen and lioorc Hon. T. P , O'Connor. A very pretty and impressive din- play was made yesterday afternoon on the occasion of the funeral of little Clara Loohraman , a child of colored parents , who died on Monday. The funeral was conducted under the auspices of the Daughters of the Tabernacle and the Maids nnd Pages' Tent , two orders closely connected with the Knights of Tabor , n colored , organisation somewhat like the Knights of Pythias. The Tabernacle includes the mature female relations of the Knights and the Tent their children , the iormor being entitled to $000 on their death and each mem ber of the Tent to funeral expenses. The ceremonies were con ducted by Sir W. H. Wallace , chief grand drill master of the Temple and Tabernacle and deputy grand mentor of the National Temple , Knights of Tabor. A good representation of .the Daughters turned out , and about thirty Maids and Pages , representing the Tent. The little girls were dressed in white , with appropriate regalia - galia , and , ns they marched behind the elegant white hearse which bore the remains of their late follow member they made a very impressive appear ance. The procession marched through the streets to the church on the cor ner of Eighteenth and Webster , where appropriate services were hold , and from thence drove in carriages to Prospect hill , whore burial took place in the form prescribed. Sir Wallace comes to Omaha from Gallatin. Mo , , for the purpose of re viving thoao orders in this city where they wore established once before , bat eventually became disorganized. Ho came March 27th , and since his arri val has contemplated locating hero if Mrs. Wallace , whom ho expects hero , should bo equally pleased with the place. The Maids and Pages Tent , was or ganized for the purpose of uplifting the colored race by organizing the chil dren and drawing off their attention from the usual frivoltios of life. The National Temple , which includes tha rest in a manner , wan organized in 1852 , languished in obscurity during the rebellion , and in 18GG was re vived , and includes now 10,000 Sir Knights in the United States. Their annual mooting is called a Congress , and moots this year at Little Rock , Ark. Sir Wallace expresses his inten tion ot having the next Congress hold , in Omaha. Ho is in a position to se- { euro this probably as ho occupies the second highest position in the Temple. Ho is a very fine looking ; gentleman and a very pleasant and in telligent man , who will prove a valua ble addition to the members of his race now in this city.
