A LOST HEIRESS.
A. Diligent Search Being Made
for a Young Lady of
Wealth ,
An Apparent Attempt to Keep
Her Oat of Sight nnd Hearing -
ing of Her Friends.
She Romnlna n Ignorance of the Fact
tliat She baa Property.
Some six or seven years ago a
ftrntly named NcfT , living it St. , Dor-
oin , Mo. , were broken up by the
death of the father , and that of the
mother following soon after , the two
sons and two daughters were soon
loparatod , taking up their homes in
different localities nrid with different
families. There was some property
oft to them , nnd n guardian was ap
pointed to look after their interests ,
some of this property was Bold and
divided , and a portion belonging to
the heira was received by them.
There was nome property , however ,
which was said to bo covered with
mortgages and otherwise encumbered ,
so that the settlement of it was
delayed year after year , the heirs sup
posing that it amounted to too little to
worry over or look after.
It appears that ono of the daugh
ters , Miss Cora Noff , is entitled to "n
lar o amount yet , no settlement hav
ing been made with her , and her
share of the estate proving to bo moro
valuable than any supposed it to bo.
She was but a child when the homo
was broken up , and eho was taken by
a family and soon after transferred to
another family , and soon lost sight of
altogether. Ono of the brothers is
living among the Indians , nnd , the
other has not boon hoard of for some
time. Ono sister , Mies Bhoda Noff ,
has lived in this city and in Omaha
for some time , where she still is mak
ing her homo with her uncle ,
Mr. William Kimball , who hai
fcdon a resident hero for ever
thirty years. This sister has not mot
her younger sister Cora for fully six
years , and has lost all track of her.
She has several times received reports
concerning her whereabouts , but on
tracing them up has found that it wna
some one's else sister and not hers , or
that her sister had lefb before olio
could roach her. She at ono time
learned that she was in a hotel at
Corning , but on going there found
that her sister had gone. At _ another
time she got proof that her sister was
in. Council Bluffs , in company with
some ono , but who the person waa
could not bo learned. She remained
hare but a day or two. The last trace
was that she a few months ago wont
with a family to Colorado , and she is
supposed to bo some where in that
part of the country.
It is thought a key has boon found
to explain the diftculty of tracing up
the missing girl. It is said , that var
ious advancns have have , boon made
by certain parties to got control of
the property in which she still retains
an interest , and it is claimed that tbo
property is of so much greater value
than was originally supposed as to
prove a motive for designing persons
to > keep her in ignorance concerning
herown rights and own wealth , and
to keep her whoroabouta from those
of .her friends who -would gladly enlighten
lighten her.
Miss Cora Noff , the missing heiress ,
ia now only seventeen yenra old , and
being thrown out of homo aa a girl ,
has had little or no advantages BO far
as can bo learned. She has worked
in different families and as long as she
is cut off from communication with
hor'friouds , has no way of learning
that she is the rightful possessor of
enough property to place liar above
want. The sister hero is satis lied that
she is still being kept in iguoranco for
the purpose of keeping her out of the
property , and hence is now using all
possible means to thwart such a scheme
by hunting her up and getting her to
assort her rights.

( A deaf and dumb cripple , who has
already gained a suQlcinut notoriety
in Omaha by hia ugliness and un-
couthncsa , was looking over Council

frightening good housewives and inno
cent children , Chief Fields under

lively ecufllo ensued , in which the

Down on Dowdy.
Complaint has boon made that
Dowdy is still selling drinks at his
place near Dohany's ' hall without the
needed license , nnd the council has
instructed the city attorney to look
after him. Some time ago Dowdy
filed the bond and petition for a li
cense , and the old council granted him
ono. On complaint of Mr. Dohany ,
however , mi injunction was secured
against llecordor Burke preventing
him from Uauing the liconso. Dowdy
appeared and tendered the cash , but
the recorder refused , to receive it.
Then Dowdy was arrested for selling
without a license. Mr. Aylosworthwas
his attorney , and claimed that the
council , by granting the license ,
was estopped from prosecuting him ,
and while pressing this theory the case
was continued. In the meantime
Dowdy was arrested and put in jail on
account ot an unpaid fine for vi elation
cf United States revenue lawTho
license case was lost sight ot , and
there the matter stands.
It is thought that before a case can
bo made the council must rescind the
action granting him a license , and that
in this way only can the matter bo
unsnarled , and the saloon closed up ,

The Nonpareil yesterday morning
devotes a column or moro to an
alleged editorial in which it soaks to
picture this city as ono in which
"crime's carnival is practically unin
torruptod. " It seeks to advertise this
city , BO far as its limited circulation
will permit , as a heinous holl-holo
where man's life and woman's virtue
are not safe for a moment. If such a
charge was true , there might bo some
ground for its thus representing its
follow citizens to whom it looks for its
own broad and butter , but the facts
are far different , Ono might expect
after roading'its editorial picturing of
"crime's carnival" in this city to find
its local columns filled with accounts ol
murders , robberies , swindles and
assaults , as a verification of its edi
torial , but strange enough the report-
era do not seem to have found
any of thcso facts , with which
the editor seems to bo so
conversant. There is enough deviltry
in this city , but not moro than in
other cities of its BIZO , and while the
Nonpareil is justified in thumping
whatever evils it may find , it is by no
moans justified in picturing this city
as so much oi n hell aa to warn people
not to come to trade hero or to livo.
In its mysterious malice it does not
confine itself to pouncing upon crime ,
but as usual on Sunday mornings ,
classes preachers and nhurnh folk in
with thieves , prostitutes and trick
stora. It punctuates its editorial with
suoli flings aa "street phurUoca , "
"well dressed Bauetity , " "stump
speeches to the throne of grace , " "di
luted piety , " etc. In thid city thft
Nonpareil B utterances will cause only
a smile , aa it is known hero ; but il
any stranger should happen to see a
stray copy , let him not bo alarmed ,
and shun the city. Council Bluffi
has some bad folks , too many bad
folks , but not moro than other cities
of iU size , and mon and eyon women
have been known to have walked the : i
streets without being murdered.
