Ths stock market to-diy was nstiTf ,
but in the main weak throughout , There
WM considerable pressure to sell at time * ,
especially Western Union Telegraph ,
Denver & Rte Grande , Louisville A : Nash.
vllle , Northern Pacific preferred , WabMsb ,
Michigan Central , and Missouii Pacific ,
all of which declined sharply. In course
of the day there wera Rereral gharri
Tallies , but they were subsequently nil
lost , and 0.1 a rule lower quotation * wer
current shortly after 2 o'clock. Near the
close there was an advance in New Jersey
Central of 1 1 per cent , and a fractional re
covery in the rest of the list , which wai
partly lost in the final dealings. The
market closed with prices generally J@3j
per cent lower than ycitorday. Wabath
preferred and New Jersey Central were
the only exceptions t > the general list ,
losing 2 per cent higher ,
It was evident from the tone of the
stock market to-day that the magnates ol
the street , who had been upholding almost
consistently ever ninco Gould's dig lay ol
stoct chromot , had temporarily loit con
trol of affairs. , In the words of the street ,
there was another "peg out , " end nobodj
seemed to be able to find a hole to stick il
in again. Both Gou d and Vanderbil !
itocks fell rapidly , and the bears were it
great delight nt the prospect of recovering
some of their losses in the recent bull
campaign , Wabash preferred took the
lead in the declfne , from 57 § to 543 , while
common declined trptn 31 to 203 ; Louis.
vllle & Nashville dropped 1 $ per cent ,
Lake Shorn 1J , Michigan Central 3 , Den <
ver & Rio Grande 2J , Now York Central
1 , Western Union 1 } , and cither leading
stocks scored appreciable declines. II
was rumored at ono time that a prominent
house had failed , and at another that Jaj
Gould was dangerously ill , ono runioi
giving his disease ns diphtheria , and aa <
other setting it down as cauceriuthe
throat. TJiere was noallure , and George
Gould said his fathtr was Buffering from i
severe cold and waa out of danger.

WATER MAIN DISASTER ,

An Unusual Pressure the Cruise.
> rmcr Tribune , April 11.
The niftin writer pine , the great nrto-
y of the water works honrt , which
nnnfica the whole physical nystom of
ho city , broke in twninnfew niUnites
> eforo 10 o'clock laat night in the
enter of Col fax avenue , between
Jftlifnrtiia nnd Woltoti , nnd about fifty
eot distant from the cast end of Col-
ax avenue bridge. The people in
lie immediate neighborhood wore
rat startled by the Bound of
HUSHING WATEUS ,
: ut attributed it to a freak of the
wind , which WAS blowing a gnlo at the
imo. Very soon they were brought
x > a realization of their mistake by a
lood that rushed over their premises
and into their collars.
At the insUut of this break , which
xcurred six feet below the surface ,
ho water burst up trough the ( ground
nnd in solid column arose high into
ho air like lava from n volcano and
allng , spread n Hood. At the out-
jurat , n stream went rushing through
Oolfax and down to California , while
a sea of water Hooded downward
hrough lots , under houses , and
emptied into Cherry creek.
Almost instantly the rushing waters ,
seeking a natural and accommodating
outlet , cut their way through two
mrallol depressions which led from
ho point of the break
OWN TlIK HANKS INTO THE CRKBK.
\s soon as this break was made there
ho waters which had formed n lake in
ho streets began to recede nnd flow
owards the fountain. In the moan-
imo the earth began to cave around
ho point of outflow and a little lake
ully 100 foot in circumference was
ormod , nnd in the center a beautiful
'ountnin played at the rate of 300,000
; allonian hour , sending a cataract
over the banks of Ohorry crook cov
ered tlio bed with n lively stream.
An hour after the break the entire
3od of Cherry creek wan submerged.
L'oraoiiH crossing at Curtis , Larimer
and Blake streets wore mystified by
the appearance of BO much water ,
and , as a solution of Mio problem ,
decided within themselves that there
liad been a great rain storm nbovo.
But the water which overflowed the
little lakn in such great quantity as tc
cover the bed of Ohorry crook wat
not half. So violent was the rush of
water in the beginning that the

and literally carried away , thus loav
[ npt a reservoir of great supply. Tin
pressure therefore supplied a great ; underground
dorground stream which coursed iti
way along the pine through the abutment
mont of the bridge and emptied int <
Cherry crook.
From the great volume of watoi
which coursed down Ohorry crook i
was a reasonable supposition that at
the water pressure was cut off from tin
city. But later investigation provoc
that there was a aufliciont amount stil
rushing through the broken ehammlti
supply domestic wants. But in CM <
of iiro the city would have been an
would bo now at the mercy of th
flames.
MK. IlAltKEY COKKIQAN ,
the Street Commissioner , was return
ing homo from the Kindel & Stowar
fire at 10 o'clock. Just as ho landci
at the Colfar end of the bridge ho wo
attracted by the roaring of the waters
Following the direction whence th
sound came , ho ran up Colfax avenue
It was very dark in that locality , a
there are none of the city's ga lamp
there , and Mr. Ourrigan very rjuickl ;
found out the causp of the singula
noise by plunging into the lake.
At once appreciating the importance
anco of the matter , lie ran homo a
quickly as possible , changed his cloth
ing , saddled his horse and started fo
the nearest tclophono station. Tlior
ho communicated wUh thowaterwork
and informed the ofllcorn that
TUB MAIN V1VR HAD IJUIIST.
Then ho rode to police hcadquai
tors , where ho gave the informatioi
and procured three lanterns. Whoi
ho ngain reached the scone of th
great eruption ho found that th
lamps had no oil. Buggioa , carriage
and pedestrians were passing that wu ;
and the situation became extromol ;
dangerous. Running across th
bridge to Morgan's saloon , corner c
Eleventh street and Ooltax avenuehi
succeeded in filling his lamps , am
while returning to the pluco wu
joined by a reporter for The Tribune
One of the lamps ho placed in the center
ter of the bndgo , another at the edgi
of the surging waters , and the otlio
ho kept for investigation.
With the assistance of Mr. Ourrigai
the reporter niaclo his invcstigatione
There was the sign of

the great surface streams and th
underflow which had forced a ehanno

At half past 12 o'clock Suporinten

arrived at the econo and was intot
viewed by The Tribune reporter , win
remained to aau the ultimate result o
the break. Mr. Holmes ( aid tin
water company had received infnnna
tion of the break two hours before
and having ascertained that a portioi

Ho had boon on a tour of the city am
said ho had just made arragomeuta t
start the machinery of the old wato
works , which would Lo in oporatioi

good as his word , Until 2 o'clock tin
morning a sluggish stream came fror

had there boon n fire however trivia
the consequences might have booi
most disastrous , for a stream throug

[ ts muddy condition , however , is
clearly attributable to the break , and
t is quito reasonable to suppose that
the main pipes and oven the small
pipes are largely supplied with sand
and gravel throughout the city.
Mr. Currigan remained all night
with his lanterns nt the bridge to pre

serious convenience , not nt least for n
irotractcd period , for it will bo but
