It Does Etloctlvo Work Without Sher iff or Spring Trnp. Da\cnport G&retlc , April $ , Coroner Uawdon returned yestor- dny morning from Walcott , ticnr which place ho conducted an inquest on the body of n suicide Monday niijlit. The pniliculars of the case are unusual , and the idea was proba bly conceived from reading the no- counts of the execution of Ilcilwagcn in Rock Island n week ngo last Fri day.Tho The name of the victim was Voter I'owlilz , n young man between 22 and 23 yearn of ai > c.wlio tin ) a brother and sitter living in Davenport. His par ents liavo boon dead for several years. I'otor has lived with Adolpli Otto , a farmer near Walcott , ior several years , and so intimate has been the rdlnthns between them that the young man might do called Mr.Otto's adopt * od son. For the last ton years Peter haR worked on the farm of Mr. Otto , and during the last four years ho has received ? 200 per year in addition to his board. The young man left the house of his employer on Sunday noon , feeling badly on account of the conduct of a young lady ho know very well. lie was in a melancholy frame of mind , and had been for weeks , though no particular manifestations were noticed either on that day or before. On Monday forenoon the body of young Powlitz was found on the farm about half a milo from the house. It was suspended from a fence post , The rope used was between five and. six feet in length , one-half inch in size. From the condition in which the body was found it appears that ho adjusted the rope around hia neck while sitting on the fence , and that done , hi jumped off. IIo was resting on hi knees , with the body inclining for ward , so that the hands and elbows touched the ground. Not satisfied with the attempted hanging , whicl : must havn failed in doing its work a : quickly as wan intended , Powlit ? had taken a piano bit , and with this cu * his left wrist BO that it severed tin radial artery , causing it to bleed freely. The fence was the ordinary live board kind , about five foot from tin ground to the upper eido of the top board. On this ProwliU had scratched od with a nail several words whicl could not bo deciphered. On one o the lower boards , written in the sam < way , but plainer , was the sentenc signed "P. P. : " "I cannot Hvo any longer. " An examination of the sui cido's person failed to shqw any letters tors or property , or anything from which a history of the man could be gathered. Ho had taken off his boots and hat , these being carefully placed on the ground. AMUSEMENTS. Duproa and Benedict's Mlnstrols- Jonn McCullough. Last night Boyd's opera house was crowded jam full to witness the ex cellent performance given by Dupre/ & Benedict's well-know minstrels. Negro minstrelsy seems to retain its hold on Omaha theater-goers , judging from last night's crowd. There ia something of the same attractive force in a minstrel show that there is in a circus. People can go and sco the oamn performance and laugh at the same jokes dozens of time ] , and go homo with the satis faction that they have had their money's worth. The art of negro minstrelsy is purely American. The camp-meeting hymsn , the plantation song and dance , the gist and odd bita of negro drollery and grotesque humor , all belong exclusively to the American negro. When compared with Leavitt'a fine company Uuprez it Benedict's fall short , but are , nevertheless , as good as the average. The female impersonators senators are decidedly the worst fea ture of the show. Kents dancing however was vorjr good , Halestron'a bad acting und singing may perhaps - bo attributable to the pulveiizing ho got yesterday afternoon at the hands of an Omaha stalwart. ; The best men in the company are Tom Wnrfield , who is a host , Archie White and J. T. Gulick. The company play in Council Blufl'a to-night. JOHN Mcu0ux > uan. It will bo remembered that las season Uio two nines jopresontini these corporations played several in toresting matches , in which the U. This season i appears that the order of things is teas > be reversed , The B , & M , nine ha boon reinforced by the arrival of rev- oral good players , and the Union Pa cific has lost aerie of ita beat men. The consequence in thatif thomatchcs. are not moro oven the B. it M. will have the advantage , and the public may rest assured of seeing some fine playing on both sides. SHIFTING THE SHOPS. Rumored Uomovnl of Worklngmon to Balance tbo Political Situation. A few days ago the master me chanics from the various points along the line of the Union Pacific wore summoned to Omaha to meet the general officers of the road. This call , at the time , occasioned consider able speculation , and the cause of the council waa a matter of general con jecture. It is rumored , and upon pretty re liable authority , that the recent demonstration of the workingmen has alarmed the corporation oflicials , and the subsequent result of the city elec tion confirmed their fears. Sidney Dillon , the president of the Union Pacific , was in the city for a week during the most exciting pe riod following tno strike , and it is said that lie declared that the concentration of such largo numbers of men at ono point was dangerous to the interests of the road , and that they ought to bo scattered along the line and the now shops demanded by the increasing business of the road built at other points than Omaha. It is now stated that the ofliciala are taking preliminary stops toward the carrying-out of this order , and that the mooting of master mechanics at this point was with a view to thai end. The reports state that Denver ia to havo'a lareo slice in this division , while North Platte , Grand Island , and other division headquarters , come in for their share ot the spoils. The recent departure of Assistant General Manager Kimball for Denver , which occurred since the meeting referred to , would seem to indicate that the rumors have some foundation , and it is probably the desire to c fleet the di vision before the fall elections take placo. CONFIDENCE GAME. Arroat of Supposed Highway ROD- bora Failure to Identify Tliom. On Monday night three bold rob beries wcro committed in Omaha , * on the public streets , and last evening two men were arrested on suspicion of being implicated in the crime. On confronting the mo they were unable to say positively whether they were the right ones or not in fact , the darkness and ex citement had BO confused their ideas as to the appearance of the highway men that they could not toll any thing about them. The two men were discharged , as there was noth ing upon which to hold them. A BAD MAN. , Appearances Are Not Always Decelt- flil. i It will bo remembered that onTuoa- day lust a man was arrested by Detec tive Hazon on the suspicion of being a burglar , having sold to Messrs. Shroodor & Boot a couple of valuable silver-plated speculums. The sus pected man also carried a mysterious and bad looking outfit , including Htamps , koya , a couple of piocoa of candle , etc. , the latter being the in variable equipment of a burglar. When the man was taken into the < police court ho told a plausible story about an involuntary exchange of valises , in which ho was the loser and was in accordance therewith discharged.
