HOLIT WEEK.
An Interesting Week nnd tbo Ser
vices Thereof.
The Catholic church this week cel
ebrates the memory of the passion
nnd death of the Redeemer. Every
part of the sacred liturgy is directed
to this end. The church oflicos are
moro solemn and moro multiplied than
in any other week during the year.
They show her concern and trouble
for the BUn'orings of her Redeemer
and the sins of men. She lays aside
every i expression of joy and festivity.
Those , peculiarities are especially no
ticeable in the exercises of the Catho
lic church known as the Tonebrao ,
which is sung on the evenings of
Wednesday , Thursday and Friday.
This name is given to the service from
the circumstance of extinguishing ,
during the course of it , all the can
dles which have bonn prepared in the
sanctuary for the ceremony. This exercise -
orciso was hold in all the Catholic
churches of the city lait evening at
7:30 : o'clock.
To-day is called Mnundny-
Thursday , which was instituted for
the sacrament of 'tho Eucharist. The
services in the morning are always
very impressive. At the church of
the Holy Family , nt the conclusion of
the ! ) o'clock mass , there will bo a sol
emn procession of children and clergy
to the repository , which has already
been erected and which is now in
course of elaborate and artistic decora
tion.
tion.On
On the following day the feast of
Good Friday is commemorated on the
death of the Redeemer. In the
several Catholic churches 'hero will bo
both morning nnd evening devotions.

articles of devotion , such as water ,
oil , etc. , are blessed , and spiritual pre
paration for the celebration of Easter

A "BLACK.SNAKE.- .
An Irate Husband Goes for a Would-
be Seducer.
A story of misplaced confidence in
told which involved a Bohomiantowii
business man in a pretty little tow.
It appears that this man whom wo
will call Mr. Blank , had been paying
unwarranted attentions to the wife of
a tailor living in the same locality.
The lady did not reciprocate his ad
miration and told her husband that he
had approached her several times , anil
that his overtures were unpleasant.
Last Sunday Mr. Blank met the hus
band of hiu inamorita and asked Mm
in a casual way whore ho waa going to
bo that evening. Ho replied that
there was to bo a mooting which would
detain him out until 11 o'clock or
later.
At 8 o'clock Mr. Blank wont to the
residence of his adored ono , and found
her with no one else present but au
old man. Ho sent the latter out to
got some beer , and during his absence
made indecent proposals to her , tried
to kiss her , and manifested his passion
in other ways.
The husband was watching all these
proceedings through the window , the
curtain being partially raised , and at
length when ho thought the proper
time had arrived .to stop the business ,
ho broke through the door , and with
a heavy black-snake whip wont for
Mr Blank in a vigorous manner. The
intruder fled and was chased for seine
distance , falling every few steps to be
goaded on by the relentless lash. At
length , however , ho escaped down a
dark alloy , a sadder and wiser mnn.
