Ho Favors the Sidn of Labor and
Strikes nt Monopollos ,
Thcro was a largo audience gathered
nl the Haptist church Sunday evening -
ing to- listen what the pastor , llov.
Mr. Lemon , had to say concerning
"Tho Relationship of Labor and
Capital. " Ho took as his text a
passage in revelations : "Ho that
londnth into captivity ohnll go into
captivity ; lie that killoth with the
sword must bo killed by the sword. "
The speaker interpreted the passage
ns moaning that vengeance when
taken ij hard by man led to still
further troubles and vegoanco.
Vengeance alone belongs to God ,
1L and Ho would take care of the right
L and BOO that justice was meted out.
The principle laid down in the text
was a true one , and applicable to thcso
!
times and to the question in hand.
Those nations which had conquered
others by the sword had in turn boon
conquered , and those who had en
slaved others , had in turn been led
into captivity. History showed this
to bo true. Several inatancea were
cited , and the condition of many
European countries pictured as illus
trative , while in our own land the
slavery of the blacks Imd been paid
in blood and sorrow.
The speaker showed that at pres
ent capital was thus leading labor into
captivity. Ho cited facts and figures ,
first trom Europe : md then from this
l..nd , showing how labor was being
crushed and crowded into the dust.
In Europe priestcraft anl kingcraft
were responsible. White laborers
were being given n pittance , royal
families were being supported in lux
ury and idleness , and drawing im
mense sums from the sweit and blood
of the toiling masses. In this coun
try capital was crushing lab > r as in
Europe kingcraft was crushing it.
What should bo done ?
The speaker claimed that if the
principles of Christianity were uni
versally accepted and followed , no
such question would arise. The truth
of God as a father and all men as
brothers , if put into pract'cal life ev
erywhere , would end all trouble.
Some blamed Christianity-for many
oppressions of the pool1 , but ouch
shall remember that no suoh oppres
sions come from the principles of
Christianity bub from those falsely
profcssinc to be following these prin
ciples. It might bo sot down as a
fixed fact that anything oppressing to
man in the name of Christianity was
Satan clothed as an avcol of light.
The speaker having given the relig
ious view , took up the question from
worldly standpoint. Ho pictured
* the two"extreme views , one ofwhich
formed the doing away with all prop
erty rights , the other which would
shoot down any one agitating in favor
of labor. Loth views ho thought
wore wrong. Without a property
right there would ho no incentive for
industry to .accumulate property , and
society could not exist. It was true
that a man had no natural right 'to
land any moro than any other
it man. God gave the earth to all
men , not to any particular
man or act of n > cn , just as ho g.ivo
air and water to all men. In form
ing society , however , it was neces
sary for some individual rights to be
given up for the good of the whole ,
and hence property rights had been
established. A man must bo pro
tected in these righta by society , but
on the other hand the man owdd
something to society in return for
these rights A man could not by
his own industry accumulate a mill
ion dollars. There was something
wrong in society where it was possible
for a men to accumulnto such great
fortunes , and there was alwayn theft
or injustice as the basis. If oocioty
protected a selfish , grasping dishonest
man in the possession of a fortune ,
surely society was not bound to pro
tect him after death in the disposi
tion of the proporfy. The speaker
did not believe in wills. A man had
no right after death to reach his
ghostly arm back to manage worldly
n Hairs longer. Such property should
bo divided in accordance with just
laws among the immediate family
only , and after they had received a
fair portion , the rest should revert to
society.
Ho also denounced corporations
and monopolies , and gave warning
that unless there was n halt , the time
would como when ono man would bo
king of all the railroads , and in fact
king of this country. Labor m
Europe had boon so oppressed that it
would have long since burst forth in
fury and led its captors into captivity ,
but this country furnished an uscapa-
valve. Labor was pouring in hero ,
and when this country should bo as
thickly populated as Europe , and
there was no other country to aflbrd
a vent , then what ? Then must como
the change spoken of in the text.
Labor , made furious and at bay ,
would turn and strike , lilood would
flow , and capital would in tarn bo led
into captivity.
The speaker urged a change in the ' /
laws regarding wills , corporations
and monopolies. Ho predicted the
time when railroads must become
national property,1jand urged ill
Christian people to think and pray
concerning this contest , and do all in
their power to rnsist the oppressors
of labor.

tion to bo bestowed upon it , haa lock
ed up within it , if intelligently pursued -

assured success . We believe the poul-
try business occupies , vmh a very :
largo porporlion of American farmers ,
fie position above indicated. The
Btock of poultry is often looked upon
as an almost intolerable nuisancewell
enough to have abuut when an unan
nounced call is made by some mem
ber of the clergy , in such cl to prox
imity that some offender miy bo con
veniently seized by the nn.jo of the
neck , but nt moat times regarded as
intruders upon the soil. Iho truth
is , the Hock of chickens do much to
hold the herds of noxious insects and
vermin in check , as well as to furnish
some most excellent "picking" at
other times than when the "preacher"
come ? round , besides helping material
ly to cwcll the income from the farm ,
and richly deserve to bo moro highly
esteemed than they are in very many
instances.
In order that n Hock of
poultry niny csmo up to the
full value of profit to which they
are capable , their habits and wants
should bo carefully studied. Ono of
the worst practices possible to bo fol
lowed io to allow them unrestrained
access to a crib of corn. In such cases
they becomeso fat as to bo nearly
barren in egg production , and fail maj
torially in helping to swell the exche
quer of the household , as they should
do , and would , if properly fed with a
fair allowance of mixed fccds should
consist of oats , buckwheat , boiled pi-
tatocs , ( oven though you have to send
o Scotland for them , ) with n dish of
; ra\ol , and another of lime constantly
lear , to which they may have free ac
cess. They also need a supply of
ivaler , and good warm quarters for
roosting places , and for shelter in cold
c stormy weather , which will admit
plenty of sunshine. The things pro
vided , it will not bo so materially dif J
ferent. Tim will bo of great impor 1
tance to a young breeder in establishing - 1
ing himself , especially with his cus 1I 1I
tomers who might depend on his 1I I [
