Am very confident wo shall carry it ,
but to do it we must elect a man from
the Fourth ward. Mead is out of

shall have the pinching works vote to

once the place is peculiarly liable to
10 law of mutation. Mru. Stewart
ildom leaves the building , but the
Tvnntu can readily step out by the
lar gate , for they never use the
grand entrance. Judge Hilton nnd
Mr. Libby often > nako calls , nnd Dr
Mnrcy is occnsionally in , but these ex
ceptions hardly break the long reign
of silence1. The first floor contains
the receiving-room , drawing-room ,
diniug-room , nnd picture-gallery.
The ceilings are eighteen feet hihex- } !
cept the lust mentioned , which is marly
40. The furniture is elegant beyond
description. Ascending n marble
staircase the library is reached , and
also the Stewart bedroom and apart
ments for guests , all gorgeously fur
nished. Think of no grand nn ostnb.
ment being nolcly occupied by n wid
ow and her servants.
Thin palace , like most structures of
the kind , is highly inconvenient.
Ono would think , indeed , thrvt it was
built moro for uppcaraneo than for
comfort. The Inttor , 'however , is
rarely considered in the domestic
nrchitecturo of njgrcnt city. Hnd
Stewart been disposed to make n spa
cious nntl ncomniodnting houto ho
could easily have accomplished his ob
ject , but what would the world say ?
The determination to excel that gene
before him led to the construction of
this showy but inconvenient plnco.
Readers thinkof n feeble old lady being
obliged to make the ascent of thitty-
six stops ( each six inches ) in order to
reach the family bedroom.
