BUMPS ANB BRUISES.
Wreck of a Conetruotlon Train on
the Rock Island Near Hero.
Yoatorday afternoon the construc
tion train on the Kock Island road
working between Weston and here
was badly wrecked about three miles
east of this city. The engine waa
backing and pulling seven ' flat cars
and a caboose and running fifteen
miles an hour , when m turning a
curre , the rear truck of the curve , for
some caUHO not known but supposed
to bo an obstruction on the Irack ,
jumped the rail. The online follow
ed and the flat cars telescoped , piling
one upon another and together with
the caboose the whole train was laid
an ulter wreck on the north aide of
the track. The engineer , J. W.
Shields , of this city , together with the
fireman ) Qeorgo Bncon , jumped aa the
engine loft the trnck. The latter was
thrown agninst a fence and was
knocked senseless , but was found to
have sustained no serious injuries ,
though ho had an ugly cut in his sido.
Tbo engineer wont through the cab
window and escaped with bruises on
the hand and leg. Conductor Keat
ing , of Stuart , received sonic bruises ,
both knee caps being badly scraped.
The only ono seriously hurt wns a
brakeman , a young man named Hess-
er , who waa hurt about the thigh ,
and received seine other injuries ,
) ut no .bones wore broken. It la
thought ho is not dangerously hurt.
So was taken to his homo in Woston.
A wrecking train was sent from this
city and the work of clearing the track
was found to bo a diflicult ono. The
lat cars and caboose were badly
smashed , but the engine , though
dumped and covered with debris , lost
only iti headlight , stack and arch.

While the police were all away from

another" jail delivery waa effected.
Cho prisoners kicked open the cala-
IOODO door and crawled out the win-
don of the oflico. Five thua escaped ,
ncluding "Dutch Bill" and Micky
lawk , both of whom were locked up
or vagrancy , but who are wanted for
robbing a man of $80. The three
other prisoners were recaptured , but
hose two are still at large. "Dutch
Jill" wa < ) among those who escaped in
ike manner two days ago and waa
only recaptured yesterday afternoon
and now ho escapes for a second time.

A short time ago there was a lively
row among some men and women liv
ing in dug-outs in the eastern part ol
the city , The police arrested two ol
the men and the women with whom
they were living , atid on trying the
cases the men were sentenced to jail ,
not being able to pay ttu'ir fines , and
the women were allowed logo back to
their holes in the sides of the bluff.
1 ho row and the arrests following it
have caused a revelation to bo made
concerning the lifo of one of the par
ticipants , a young man , named
Adams. It has cotno to light
that not long ago ho was in
far difforotit circumstances. lie was
leading a h ppy landlord's life at At
lantic , whore ho waa running a hotel
belonging to his brother , IIo had an
excellent wife and ono sweet child ,
Hiid waa prospering in all his ways ,
making money rapidly , and having a
comfortable homo and many friends.
IIo became infatuated with a young
woman of rather prnpossossiny appear
ance , but of easy virtue , and his
brother , suspecting that all waa not
richt , took occasion to warn him and
admonish him. The next day the
young man disappeared together with
Iho woman who had stolen away his
love for his wife and child. No tidings
came from him for some time , but at
last there was a report that ho was in
the city. Search was m&do for him ,
but in vain , and the worthy woman
whom ho had wedded and deserted ,
becoming satisfied that ho was not
going to return to her , commenced
notion for a divorce. A week ago the
friends noticed in Tm : BEB an ac
count of his arrest hero , and his
brother being informed , came to this
city , and yesterday visited tlio young
man in jail. The brother said that
the wife would not receive her re
creant husband again under any cir
cumstances , and ho would not urge
lior to do no , as ho had
acted so despicably towards her.
Ho was willing to help his brother ,
to lead a now life , and ho paid the
pouncf inan'a fine and secured for him
Ilia liberty. The prodigal expressed a
rather repentant ocsiro to try and re
deem himself , and consented to return
to Atlantic with his brother. In the
meantime the woman with whom ho
eloped is quartered in the side of a
bluff , waiting for him to servo out his
; orm in jail. She will dbubtlcsa bo
surprised to learn that ho has con
cluded io leave her , and will now have
to shift for herself 'an best she
can. When they started off togothtr
m their guilty career they had money ,
ino clothes and a bright prospect bf
much giddy pleasure. Now they are
reduced to poverty , without money ,
with few friends , with > rags for their
lakodness , ono has left the dirty dug
out to return chagrined to his friends
and the other has but a road of death
apparently open for her.
In the Tolls of tbo Law.
Yesterday morning the case of the
State vs. Laura Sheldon and Louis
Bashaw waa brought before Justice
Framoy , they being charged with con
spiracy. The complaining witness
waa A. Bernstein , who claims that ho
sold furniture and other property to
Laura Sheldon , and that she and Ba'-
shaw had tried to defraud him of his
pay. The defendants took a change
of venue , and the cases were sent to
Justice Abbott. Tlip prosecution ,
represented' by Attorney Holmes ,
asked for a continuance , and this was
opposed by Attorney Lindt , for the
defense. The matter was sharply ar
gued , and there nero seine rod hot
passages at tongue's length , and
when Justice Abbott decided thai
the prosecution was entitled to no con
tinuance , Holmes expressed himself
as outraged in feeling , and charged
the court with ignorance of the law.
Ho declined to go on v > ith the cases
claiming ho waa not ready , and the
defendants were discharged. Holmoa
started at once for Frainoy's court ,
with the intention of filing a now in
formation and beginning the cases
afresh , with the threat that ho would
keep it up oven if the cases camoagain
to Justice Abbott and were again dis
missed , andjulso a subpiuna for Justice
Abbott as a witness. The defendants
appeared and took a chai go of venue.

Dr. A. G ) tschalk , of West Union ,
was convicted on the 20th inst. in the
Winncshiek county district court , of
killing his wife at West Union on Feb
ruary 8 , 1880. The jury was out
four houri , and returned a verdict of
manslaughter
Rev. W. L. Bray , in a sermon on
the moral conditions of Clinton , gives
the following utatistics : "There are
in Clinton 3,300 youth of schbol ago ,
and only 1,900 in the day schools ,
public and private , There are only
1,342 in the Sunday-schools. There
are only 2 , COO church-goes in this
city of 10,000 inhabitants. Wo have

posts ono saloon for nearly every

On the 20th inst. the first train on
the Dos Moinca and Narrow Gauge
railway wont over the new bridge over
Middle river near Lathrop. When
fairly on the structure it gave way ,
precipitating the engine , two flat cars

ono waa killed , but the fireman and
engineer were seriously , and four oth
ers slightly injured.
The DCS Moines Register says that

The Chicago & Northwestern rail
way co.npany contemplates building a
branch leaving the Algona line fifteen
miles north of Algona , running west
through the north tier of Iowa coun-

the Milwaukee & St. Paul. A party

A scholar in a Catholic school at Le

Sunday afternoon Samuel Atkins
stood talking to some men near the
Chicago , Milwaukee & 8 b ; Paul round
house. At the same time Norman
Qadboia , near by , was examining a
revolver that he had taken from hia
Father's desk. He' noticed that one
of the cartrigea had boon struck by
the hammer , and ao concluded that it
was no good or had been shot off ,
Like the ordinary "nojgood" cartridge
of the "wasn't loaded" revolver it was
only waiting to got a man at the busi
ness end of it , when it went off as
easy as lying. Samuel Atkins' nose
happened to bo just in range , so the
skittish bullet penetrated the same
just below life eyes and got lost. Dr.
Kinney run hia probe in three inches ,
but the bullet could not be found.
Ho thinks it ia probably lodged on
the roof of the mouth and will event
ually become dislodged and go down
his throat. The bullet is a No. 22
and made an ugly , but not nocosbarily
