OMAHA JL > Ai.LY , BEE : THURSDAY. MAECH 16,1880- AMITY'S ' ARTICLES Of Faith , Qoofl Fellowship and Learning , " " " Erogresa and Prosperity of the Young Town of College f. Springs , Iowa. Success of the Scheme to Found , an Educational In- atitution. The Town , the Clinroli nnd Other Mnttom. Correspondence ol Tun fin. CoitEOK SrniNos , la. , March 8. In the southeastern part of Pngo county , art ! nearly in the center of the equilateral triangle , bounded by th Wnbaah , the Clarinda & Tarkio , an the Villisca branch railroads , la th quiet town * of College Springs , abou eight miles from Braddyvillo on th east and the same from Coin am JJIanchard on the west , and about ton miles from Glarinda on the northeast , with which it is connected by mail stage. Twenty-five years since the planting of this little colony has brought many changes in the social , religious , politi cal and commercial phases of the na > tion , for the society of our towns , vil lages and cities has taken many at rides forward , leaving common sense and that "slow coach , "and racing for ward to keep company with stock gamblers , political cranks , sensational religionists , a prostitution of the fam ily relation , a wholesale bartering of humun blood for alcohol , as a state of speculation , the substitution of good clothes , fat pocket books and chock for true nioty and integrity , the popu larity rf "shams in everything , " from the pulpit and the senate to the diamond and the shirt , the effort to disgrace labor and make it the slave of aristocracy , the crowing _ 'dis regard for life and the rights of iho poor when wealth' is at stake , and the gradual change from a republican form of government to an unlimited aristocracy. by _ handing over the con trol of the national and stata govern ments to a few moneyed corporations , tliftt own the senators , legislators and governors who turn the crank , man ipulate the courts , and invent " now labels" for old methods of stealing , that would hayo put to shame and death the councillors of ancient Greece , would have boon scorned with con tempt by the noble Roman senators , and would have boon impossible among the Scribes and Rabbis of the Jewish Sanhonrium. Probably few villiagos in the state nro so free from thol ovila of "fast life" "shoddy" or "slang , " or where a purer , moral and intellectual atmosphere pervades every thinpj as it does hero. 'Tho1 early history of this colony goes /baoki to 1853 , when Rov. B. 1 < \ Haakins , of Illinois , began to enlist Bomo. influential people in 'a scheme to found a colony. The original idea won the planting of a settlement of Christians on a plan that should in- quro a , "pormtiqont fund for an insti- Button , of learning of a , reformatory character. " To sdcurp funds nnd effect' an organization , a cir cular wan issued , setting forth the designs nnd _ objects and the tplan of execution , and calling the at tention of Christians to activity when 'such a golden opportunity was pre sented for doing good ; showing this a plain and providential opening to n , largo field for doing good ; locating , as might bo agreed on , in Iowa , Mis souri or Kansas ; offorihg stock of $100 a share with a scholarship , the secur ing of ai to wnehip by purchase of the government and the establishment of a town upon it ; near a natural water power , the division of a smaller par- i tion for homos of the members , and the money secured by the sale of town lots and lands to bo sot apart for an endowment fund for the college ; the school to bo non-sectarian , to bo open for both sexes , the manual labor system to bo encouraged , and the schools at Oborlin , 0. , nnd Galesburg , 111. , to bo doomodj"worthy of imita tion. ' A CONVENTION was hold in March , 1854 , and a committee - mittoo chosen to explore portions of Iowa , and at n mootim * in the follow- year thostock was increased to $30,000 and the name of "Western Industrial and Scientific association" adopted , though the scientific part of the plan seems not to have boon in the great * central idea of this work and has nev r er assumed any definite shapo. At this time there was elected as president Ilov , John Cross , of the Congregational church , a graduate cf Oneida institute , Now York , and a native of Now England , who became * the chief executive plllcor ; corresponding pending secretary , John Davis , and treasurer , W , J. Woods. A commit- tea was sent to explore ngaiu , and of tor an extended search in the several states , a report svas made and a committee - mitteo direclod to locate the land in Paqo county , and enter articles of in corporation. The present spot of ground was selected , nnd application made for it ut the government price , $1.25 per aero , but the land agent at Council- Bluffs , acting under a rule of his own , refused to let thorn locate us they desired until that township was reached in regular order , as ho explained - plained , because it made to much con fusion in his books. So the committee - too delayed until the time ami "regu lar order" arrived , and then secured the land , which had already , by this delay , been fomowhat cut up by homestead entries , And therefore lini. ited the first success of the enterprise. In the articles of incorporation tiio township was called Amity , the school was called Amity college , and the name of the society changed to "Amity College Association. " TUB OBJECTS of the society wore moral and re ligious and not of a speculative na ' turo , and therefore efforts wore made to start right. It was Agreed that all should unite in one church , broad Enough jn its faith and liberal enough Lt J in its crcod for A grand union of Chris tian efforts , and tnis was the origin of the name Amity. Another of the Important links in this confederacy , was the prohibition of the sale of in- toxlcating drinks , n provision being made in all the original documents arid strictly continued to this day , that the violation of this part of the compact shall causb a forfeiture of the title to the property and the land re turn to the trustee * of the college. Probably no school in the state has suffered more from the CUAXQE or which has so often nearly ruined some of our excellent schools , and yet this school haa attained to ft Rood normal school rank , with something over two hundred students , and is constantly and steadily growing s ono of the solid and well regulated in stitutions , which are the pride of the state and fortifications of our civil and religious purity , freedom and strength. The school will this season graduate its fourth class in the scientific course , nnd , judging from the perfect order in the town , the thorough business 1mb its and energy displayed in All matters tors relating to the school work , the careful watching and unwavering dis cipline , the intelligent and thorough mastery of the studies pursued , nnd last , although not least , by the novor-failing significance , of the de termined and united efforts of , the whole village , wo came firmly to believe - liovo , that there will go out from this school , every year , a class of young ladies and gentlemen who are free from many of the bad habits so often acquired in college life , with good moral characters , brood views of the great questions of life , physically and intolloct'ially healthy , nnd well trained in Bolf-govornmont , full of an honest ambition , a marked energy , and a pronounced self-reliance , who will in after years return laden with success , while the state and nation will honor thorn and their amamator. Ihoro are two good literary societies jonnoctod with the institution , and the younger ono made its first public Dxhibition last evening in the U. P , ihurch. This great tabernacle was tiled to the utmost , nnd even the inwll boys were orderly , and the 'oung people who have started out in ho Chrostomathcan , and have fitted ip a fine hall and hero gave a public inhibition , acquitted themselves hon- irably , and with credit to themselves , nd the school. BEVEKAI , NEW TEACHKItH iavo boon added during the past sea- on , and the working force keeps pace rith the wants of the school. Prof. 5. O. Marshall , A. M. , president of ho college , has boon in this rosponsi- > lo place for a number ot years , and ho steady and faithful service which 10 renders is best shown by the sue- iess of the school. Ho is u gentleman if thorough cultivation , tall , com- minding nnd dignified in personal ap- > onranco , of good executive ability ind will qualified for his placo. TIIK HU1LDINOS ised , at present are only the temporary irick school building and n frama toarding hall ; but the hope is enter- ained of building n good and suitable tructuro at no distant day. The as- ociation has several THOUHANDH OF ACRES if good land , and n fair money endow- nont , and are looking forward to n uturo of honor nnd greatness wi h ) berlin , seemingly , with its great rmy of graduates scattered around ho glebe and filling the highest ata- ions in life , and recognized every- rhoro by their strength of character > nd energy. L THE TOWN ' lands on n hill , surrounded by hosts f smaller elevations , which are bo oming ornamental by1 cultivation and ; onornl iarm improvement. The yil- igo officers nro very strict in keeping ho place frco from that which would ngonder disease or unhealthy morals , na with largo shade trees , oloan trcots , beautiful spring water , and lear air , thereis much satisfaction in prospect of continued health and irospority. THE liat was begun as a unit is now spread ui into iiv3 branches , United Pros- ytorian , Methodist , Congregational , 'rosbytorian and \Vosloyan , with a ( lombership of a full thousand , and lie churches well filled every Sabbath. imong the corporators of the socio- y wo find the names of John Cross , . G. Laughlin , J. P. Donaldson , J. J. Short , J. W. MoKinloy , George ilcCollough , Wm. MoOlain , Austin itnnton , J. S. nnd Thomas Wood- ( innseo , and Joseph A. Iloid , most of /horn are still known to the people of hib part of the state , while the Rov. ohn Cross , the first. president , and the personally surveyed the land , and or many yeara preached to- the roung chuich hero , is still with his on carrying on the dry goods busi- icss nnd does a largo trade in booka , .Uhough his whitened locks , feeble teps nnd failing strength reminds us hat the four score and five years of .ctivo lifo have brought him near hia ournoy's end. The traditions of Mount Parnassus , nd the Amphictyon oracle hold the irorshippero there in a sublime nnd uyutio obedience , while the priests elated , nnd the fathers repeated to ho sons , how the gods inudo thorn- wives known in thut peculiar apt | by itrnngo noises from n oiugular open- ng in the earth , nnd the goats and ihephords were strangly attracted to ho spot , while they listened in awe ind wonder , us Moaes did at sight of ; ha burning bush , and there they jreotod a temple , nnd the muses : au ht the people and received the lovotion nnd worship of nil the tribes ind the laws nnd traditions there re vived were not to bo broken until washed nway with the blood pf the whole pooplo. So hero wo find the llagmon of the surveying party , halting on the hillside , to no tice the sound of water beneath Iho sod , and vhon the surveyor , Mr. Crass , directed the spade to bo np- plied und found a beautiful spring of excellent water , sutHcient to supply the w hole village , ho may have had feelings of joy and reverence nnd felt the inspiration of that providence that "ihtipua our ends , rough how thorn as wo will , " and how easily ho could have , as wo do in fnnoy , erected a temple of legendary lore , on this modern Delphi , at the foot of Mount Parnassus. _ BUOKKYK. That is Soaring the Polk County Dappers. Correspondence otTho Ueo. SrnoMflDUiwi , Nob. , March 12. The farmers of Polk county nro now becoming thoroughly aroused on the political issues ; they have turned eve n now leaf , nnd'lmvo comn down to hard work , and the result is that some of our chronio sere heads nro begin ning to fool very uncomfortable. They nro now beginning to BOO the hand writing on the wall. The mooting of the State Alliance hold at Hasting , January last , gave the people now hope , and the determination which is being mnnifcstod at the Alliance meet ings is conclusive evidence that the cloud that has boon gathering for several years past is now approaching at a wonderful rapid rate , and the roaring of the mighty storm can bo hoard in the distance and the machine - chino politicians nnd monopoly cappers are becoming very sensible of tbo im pending storm , which will sweep thorn into political eternity , where they will bo covered u\- \ with fraud and corruption so deep that their resurrection will bo nn impossibility. It is thorotoro not ourprising that there should bo weeping , wailing and gnashing of teeth in the tents of the money-changers nnd extortioners to gether with thrir hirelings. On the 4th inst the Polk County Alliance mot at Osceola. The moot ing was of moro than ordinary iritcr- 3st. The doli'i'.itea were composed of lomo of the befit nnd most proporous Pnrmurs wo huvo in the county. The princip.il business transacted was ; o complete nrinngcmontsfor the pub- ication of an anti-monopoly newspa per. The necessary arrangements ivero made and the farmers of Polk sounty will , in n short time , have an : rgan thnt will champion their cause , lotwithstanding the determination to luppross it that was made by a few inppors through their mouthpicco , L'lio Oscoola Kccord. The name of , ho now enterprise will bo Iho Polk bounty1 Farmers' Advocate , and will jo edited by Mrs. Ada M. Bidden- jondor , who wnn unanimously choscti jy the Polk County Alliance. The irst issue will appear March ! 0th , when five hundred > f the best fitrmors of our county will peruse the columns of n paper ; hat is not controlled by politicnl irickstors and imi ; politicians , a pa- ) or whoso object it will bo tp battle igainst unprincipled demagogues ivhosa ambition 'liioa no higher thane : o elevate themselves into positions of /rust and than locd themselves to rail roads and money sharks. The Oscoola Record sees the mistake it has made sy its endeavors to cry down the Al- ianco movement. Many of our host 'armors have refused to support this nouth-pieco of corruption any longer ind have ordered tjioir subscriptions liscontinuod and many others say ; hey will have nothing further to lo with this blatant barnacle , \.B Boon as The Farmers' Advocate is lublished , ho is hearing the death CBoll , and ic mourning in sack-cloth ind ashes. Ho is beholding that long iovetod ofiica that he at ono time im- ilorod a few democrats to assist him o ( after the republicans of our county md so unanimously sat down on him ) ranish like Abraham's ghost , and his lopartinx struggles indicates thereat ; roat tenacity with which ho clings to ; ho golden calf , like a dro'wning man ilings to a straw.
