A press dispatch from St. Paul

The monotony ol the Cox impeach

the fourteenth article : "Judge Cox
did not drink in Mnrshliuld , nor the
crowd with him. ilo wna sober nt

self , and another dtank n bottle of
Milwaukee beer nnd hud some lunch
During Thursday , Friday , and Sat-

wns sober ; saw no ilill'oronco
in his looks ; and not the least doubt
of his perfect sobiiely then , nud
have not now ; \\M present tlml night
tu the pnrlor vhen the boltlo ns
passed around under a hut. " Wit
ness explained why the judgu didn't
drink out of that bottle by explaining
that it una passed annum on one eide
of the room , and that when it got
ever to wliero ho nnd the judio ; were
there was nothing in the bottle for
anybody to drink , "Saw Judge Cox
ono morning only on which ho Mn ?
not undressed. At that time lie had
his vest and pants on ; had to pasa
through the judge's room to get out
of mine. Sunday morning t saw the
judge shaving himself , lie seemed
to bo sober ; no evidence of a spree
the night before ; saw no symptoms erred
red and inflamed eyes iu the judge
at Tyler. If ho wns cocVoycd I didn't '
discover it ; don't think the judge was
any part drunk. I had taken a drink
myself that morning nt Tyler ; had no
bottle , nnd was ns sober as I am now ;
dinnk what wo call "bug-juice" in that
country. It doesn't kill exactly , but
Eome folk's mightn't relish it ; met the
judge about three hours after , about ( i
o'clock in the afternoon ; sat in a seat
with the judge in going toMamhtield.
I ordered the beer myself not iv
all bottlo'but an ordinary bottle ;
don't generally order Binnll bottles.
The judge took a diink The next
morning in n room drank bug-juico ;
there were three of us , and wo drank
about one-third of a pint. "
Question "That was enough ,
wasn't it ? "
Answer "VVoil , wo made it do.
[ Great laughtor.j The judge anc
myself then went to breakfast am
then to the court-room ; did not drink
any more. I don't know what was
going on in the judge's room Thura
day night ; saw him in bed the ncxl
morning ; brought in the eiiino little
llaok. There were more of us thn
morning some five of us and we
dispatched it ; didn't drink any more
after that morning ; was busy tha
day , but was in the court-room hnl
the time ; don't know what the judge
did that day. Next morning when '
went into the judge's room I wasn'
dressed. When I saw ho had com
pany I wont back nnd put on my
pants. [ Laughter. ] That night w
had a couple of bottles of beer. Th
judge probably drank some of it , a
ho was in the crowd. "
Question "Was thecrowdas sober
looking as the senate ? "
Answer ( looking around ) "Well ,
don't sco any gentleman who look
IB though ho was under the influence
Friday night there was a party in th
judges room playing cards ; don1
know ono card from another ; under
stood they were playing for the tw
bottles of beer. The judge was plaj
ing ; can't say they were playing fo
beer. The judge and "Whitney wor
in bed the next morning. Thursda ;

had no permission from mo no
from the landlord.When th

it and looked at it. The judge's do
meaner was about the name as on th
two previous days ; can't testify us tc
the ludgo's condition on Monday ; IKK
a bottle in the room on Saturda ;
night. On Sunday the judge and my
self went to Lake Benton , and on re
turning I was pretty well fuddled , W
got aomo what wo call 'sweat on tli
cut'in that county ; can't say what th
judge's condition was that day , 1
was sober when wo left Tue.sday mori

Grover McGuire , a Bird Islam
lawyer , was another likely witness
Uo on croBs-oxnmination testified tha
ho was at the same hotel with Judg
Cox , and saw him drinking liquor o
different days , but always in the ovoi

feronco , in his opinion , between "s (

a man whoso capacity I know to b

doom him ono-tenth drunk , I know
Judge Cox intimately , and hav
traveled with him. I consider him
man of a capacity of fifteen or twont ;
drinks. Uo did not tnko liftson o

the entire term , I don't think ha !
a dozen drinks would bo noticed upo

in a protracted fight made against
the legality of the bonds in question.
From their statements it would ap
pear that the more peaceably disposed
citizens of the town paid tlio tax , but
a greater number refuged , and when
the ullicors attempted to levy upon the
personal property of those refusing , a
body of u hundred men or moro , to

threats und other mi'uns so deterred
nny persons from bidding that the
efforts of tbo oflicers to realize upon

unless by the intervention of executive -
tivo authority , they could collect
only a comparatively-small proportion
of the tux , which amounts to a little
over 88,000.

From "other sources it ia learned
that a number of yours ago bonds
were issued by several towns along
the route of the proposed road to aid
in its construction , of which Gredii-

road wns never iinihhcd , no part of it
being in operation and parts of it in
fact having never been even graded.
The several towns , wjtli the exception
of Greenwood , having paid the inte
rest on their bundtj under protest and
Greenwood has contended in tlie
courts that they are invalid. A re
cent decision in the court of appeals
has overthrown this plea , and the re
cent proceedings were under thia de

Greenwood is n little town of 1,500
inhabitants , near the .Pennsylvania
line , und the Stoubon county authori
ties who have been hero claim that
the people huyo been incited to und
helped in their rcHmtanco by oil men
