Hunt , his owner , ami .Jim Harrison ,
notorious gmnblors. Shortly before
Hunt hud murdered n prominent Mor
mon , and after ix brief trial ho was
condemned to hang for Ins crimo. The
acaflold was erected on the outskirts
of Salt Lake , near the overland road ,
nml the murderer was to swing midst
all the nomp of legal execution. In
the uxoitomont attending the prepara
tions on the morning of the expected
hanging Harrison entered Hutllmi'a
stable unobserved and spirited the
racer nwny. Mounted on auotlier
horse and loading llutlmn , Harrison
rodn to the gallows unsuspected ,
slipped two six-shooters into Hunt1 *
liands , and before the ollicinls or null-
titudo had recovered from tlioir sur
prise the outlaw H were charging doun
the Webber canyon trail at n speed
which detiled capture. One of u num
ber of parting ritlo ohotu killed Harri
son's horse , and it became necessary
for llutlian to carry both men. The
Mormons pursued the desperadoes
night and day , but wcro powerless to
overtake them , so wonderful was the
speed and miduranco of the stolen bay.
Not until 100 miles had been covered
did men or beast oat or rest , and on
the morning of the tenth day they ar
rived at Denver , GOD miles from the
Mormon capital. Those facts once
circulated , Uuflian became the here of
the hour.
In the Donver.raco the Oroor boys ,
who owned Chief , backed him.
Thousands of men Hocked to the track.
There was long delay , but at last amid
frenzied cheers the horses got a start ,
llultian forging ahead from the start ,
Chief Hew the track , wont over n stoop
embankment , and before ho could recover -
cover the first heat was practically
decided in Iluflian's favor. A yell of
disappointment wont up from the mul
titude , and a rush was made to lynch
the man who started Chief. Ho suc
ceeded in escaping the mob unharmed
however. More than $100,000 changed
hands on the heat.
An oven start was obtained in the
second heat , the two horses passing
into the quarter stretch neck and
neck. At the half polo Ruffian , in
response to hard whipping , slowly
took the lead. All this time Chief
had been given a frco * oin , but had
been spared the lash. Charles Ham
ilton , n desperado , who had all his
earthly possessions staked on Chief ,
stood at the back-stretch polo as the
horses approached , a navy revolver in
either hand. "Lay the whip to that
horao or I'll drop you from the sad
dle , " ho shouted to Eugene Teats ,
Chief's rider , sighting both of his
weapons. Teats know that Hamilton
would keep his word unless the order
was obbyod , and , although he was
confident that Chief would win the
second heat without urging , ho lost
no time in applying the whip. Ho
drew blood at every stroke , and Chief
wont under the wire a winner of the
heat by 100 foot in 1:42.
Then commenced a riot and turmoil
the like of which was never before or
since witnessed on a race course. Men
pulled their six-shooters and fired
madly , indiscriminately , andgold-dust
in the quarrel for stakes , was scat
tered recklessly in the sand. Huffian
was completely broken down after
this heat , and the gamblers , appre
ciating that they were beaten , became
frantic with rage. Con Oram and
Charles Switz , who afterwards became
noted prize-fighters , stood at the door
to the stand and hold the mob at bay
until the judges had given their de
cision. Chief was ordered on the
track , and after making the half milo
wire was declared winner of the race
The judges had to bo escorted from the
track to t < nvn by an armed escort
composed of volunteers from tlio win
fling side.
Mounted on broncho ponies , with
pistols and bowieknives drawn , the
Greer brothers and a party of friends
made their way to the § 95,000 nugget
and cut it to the ground. It was load
ed into a wagon and taken to town , a
guard accompanying the precious
freight. There was a largo number ol
people stabbed and shot in the melee ,
but' ' fortunately none died of their
wounds. That night Denver was one
blazing revelry , one gorgeous ort'io.
The immense nugget was cut into
smaller and moro commercial com
modities. Teats was presented with
§ 5,000 worth of these. The balance
of the winnings were equally divided
among the brothers , and in less than
forty-five hours they had squandered
all.
Uneozing.
"God bless you ! " is the common
expression of Europeans when you
sneeze in their presence ; sneezing
having been considered in ancionl
times the result of a demoniac posses
sion , to avert the evil inlluuce they
invoke a blessing. But the true phil
osophy of a sneeze is sot forth in The
Popular Science Monthly for April
under the heading ' 'What is a cold ? "
The whole of it is worth reading , but
wo have only room to transcribe what
relates to sneezing : "Sneezing in
catarrh is a method nature adopts to
stimulate the prostrate nervous centre ,
iind thus enable it to reassert its con
trol over the blood supply to that purl ;
indeed , it will bo found that the of.
focts of being exposed to drafts of
cold air arc often completely destroyed
by a succession of sneezes. Of course
nature docs not always immediately
succeed in these efforts ; but , when
she does not , ttho shock from which
t
the nervous center sutlers gradually
passes away , and the blood vessels
again como under the control of the
little nerves which regulate their cali
ber , and so the catarrh disappears in a
few hours , or at most in a few days.
It sometimes happens that the shock
from the cold air acting upon the
nervous center is of such severity that
the consequent inflaminationiaintense
enough to chock the secretion of mu
cous altogether , and in consequence
the mucous membrane is dry as well
as inflamed , and the Buttering very
much intensified. "

ART STUDIOS.
Interview with the Janitor of the
N9W York Art LOCVRUP.
Cotrc | omlciico of Washington Capltil
Strolling down Fifth avenue the
other day I slopped al the corner of
Sixteenth street , romemboriiiR how iji
: imos past I had spent many pleasant
lours in the rooms of the Art League.
It was a little late and the place
empty , all save the janitor , whom I
iad nodded to many a time in pais-
ing. Together wo walked through
the room tilled with easels , on n Inch
rested half-finished sketches in char
coal of the plaster casU scattered
about. Then up stairs into the sketch
class room ; but in the evening light
it had a ghostly look , with rough out
lines here and there on the walls of
some nude studios , the skeleton and
llayei ) figure side by side on the
model's ' plattorm.
The lost time I had boon there the
room was full of busy human beings
drawing , stopping now and then to
critically sight the relative length of
nose or limb of the unfortunate model.
Tlio surroundings in effect were little
changed. I might have loft but yes-
toiday , only my guide had n streak or
two more of gray in his hair , ami it
w.is beginning to look suspiciously
thin about the temple. Heis in n
talkative mood , and glad to got hold
of n listener.
"Yes " and the old follow
, yes , ro-
ilectivoly stroked his chin ; "wo do
have n lot of models , and no mistake.
The queer part of it is there don't
seem to bo any two nliko ; you see our
artists are mostly young and like
variety. Many ? I guess if I had a
dollar for every ono I've scon pass
through these doors my fortune would
have have been made long ago , and
no menu one , either. In our profes
sion" here the old janitor straighten
ed himself up , and , brushing his hand
across his forehead , cazod at the ceil
ing "wo take all kinds. Wo must ,
or the public would soon tire of our
work and go elsewhere. That , you
know , would never do ; the approval
of that same public moans broad and
butter. So , although now and then
it goes against the grain to follow
their taates in place of our own , yet
wo must grin and boar it , and no ono
is the wiser.
"Some days it is only a little stroll
ing violin player with his baby sister ;
but I toll you these street children ,
young as they are , know a sight moro
of wickedness and ways of the world
than you or I. They look innocent
enough , with their big black eyes star
ing at you ; but just try to send thorn
off with n quarter , and you will find
quick enough they know the value of
their time , and will not leave until
they got it.
' 'It is a sight sometimes to see them
posing quietly to a room full of ladies
and gentlemen. Oh yes , so long as
they are inside they behave quietly
enough , but once let them got out and
they fight like young tigers. Order
them oil' , and they turn on you with
such a tide of Billingsgate as shocks
oven my old cars. That is saying a
great deal , for 1 have come across some
hard characters. Then again thorq is
a funny side. Ono day the class in
portrait painting wanted an old wo
man's face. I concluded my Irish
washerwoman might as well have the
job."Yes
"Yes , indeed ; she came quick
enough a dollar an hour wai not to
bo earned every day in the wook.
Well , the poor old thing thought it
quite fine at first to be paid simply for
sitting in a comfortable chair and
having her 'picture took by all them
people in dirty aprons. ' In a little
while the novelty wore off , and she
orew ; restless , beginning to turn about ,
looking at the pictures and half-
finished sketches on the wall. When
they told her she must keep quiet or
there would bo no money , it didn't
seem quite so much fun. Then she
became drowsy and nodded , so it was
impossible for the artists to go on with
their work.
"Rouse her ? I should think they
did , but it was no use ; until finally
ono of them had to stand by poking
her up every time she showed signs of
sleeping , she growling tlio while about
their being so hard on a pour woman ,
aggrovating her in that way , when it
was hard enough being stared at
and not allowed to wink in return.
Finally they were through with her
for time day , and she loft , saying to
me as she passed out it was the hard
est day's work she had over had , and
avowing never to stop foot in again
whore all them queer artist folk wore.
"Did she keep her promise ? BlesE
your heart , no ; she was there throe
times that same wook. The monoj
kept up her spirits ,
"Wo have , as I said , every kind
here , from children all the way up tc
old men and women. And rougli
ones most of the mon are , but thoj
know enough to keep pretty straight
while they are noting as models. A
laugh or a look on their part would
pretty soon bo punished by ono of the
centlomen ; and they do not try It ,
either , for Homo of the artists arc
rather too muscular lor one to pick n
fight with. Sometimes when the gen
tlemen have a sweetheart you will set
their face over and over airain in theii
drawings. Now , there's ' Walter Shir-
law ; you remember two years or sc
ago his illustrations for the story ol
'lloxy1 that came out in Scribnor'
His face for lloxy was taken from real
life , a Miss Mansfield , to whom ho wat
engaged , The same face you will sec
in every ono of his pictures ; it jusl
seems to come out the moment hie
pencil touches the paper. Ho used tc
come to all the league receptions with
the pretty little soul hanging on hit
arm , and it would warm your hoarl
to BOO the way ho looked down at her.
Where is she now ? Oh , the romance
has had its proper ending. She hue
boon his wife now for a year ?
"Wo are progressing , but the
schools abroad are still ahead of us in
many things.
"Dear , dear ; racy stories do some
times como from across the water"
and hero my friend smiled as at some
pleasant recollection. "Ono I can
vouch for is told by a member oi this
League who was there at the time. It
was lit ono of those largo conservato
ries in Paris , and the class in nude
studios had waited long past the usual
hour , still no model appeared , till
finally the professor , growing impa
tient , wont into the dressing-room to
inquire into the delay. Still they
waited , and neither professor nor
model put in an appearance , Juat us
they were giving up in despair the
pair entered , The model , cool and
collected , walked to the stand and as
sumed her pose , but it urns tome mo
ments before the old fellow uonid got
over his oinbnrrniMnont luillloioutly to
direct his pupils. It afterward leaked
out that the unlucky cause ol delay
WIM owing to a pot of green paint
which the model , in sitting down to
take elf her shoos and stockini'n , h.ul
inadvertently knocked over. And
oven with the professor's help it took
some little time to got her looking
ihip-shnpo again. " Hero the old fcl-
o\v broke into a series of chuckles ;
.hen wiping his eyes , wont on :
' A. ridiculous thing happened over
liero at Cooper Union not long ago.
You know old Peter Cooper is norri-
ied at the very idea of the human
'orm divine being copied in its 1111-
Irapod simplicity. Ono of the teach-
> rs told a poor girl from the neigh-
jorhood she was to come on a certain
lay and pose for the young rtamscl
adios. At the appointed time the
, 'ounn damsel came , but being over
ling of relieving herself of cloak and
liat , the teacher went out to remon
strate for the loss of time , and was
not with confused blushes by the
guileless young creature , who ox-
) laincd : 'I am most ready now ; just
ivait until I tnko this oir proceeding
: o divest herself of her sole remaining
; armont. It took some little while to
explain the situation and make the
{ irl understand that ( hero were models
and models.
"I've soon some of our swellcst-
Booking young fellows start out in
search of a now subject for the sketch
ilass , and como back triumphantly
ending a miserable , lilthy old rag
picker , with his great long iron hook
joking around in the corners of the
millings and stairs as ho came up. I
< oop a pretty sharp lookout on all
such when they pass out , or those
iimble fingers would bo put to other
uses than poking after nigs. Occa
sionally things have boon stolen , but
not Tory often ; there are too many of
us about.
"Thoro is ono model who is n , favor-
to hero a pretty little slim thing
ibout 12 years old. You sop , she has
aeon a long time in the business , and
.3 deft and quick in her ways. The
jeauty of these young models is you
: an change thorn around , altering
ihoir pose often as you like , which is
more than you can with some of the
professionals got so sometimes when
they are with any of our. big artists
that they think they can dictate terms
to them. Especially if n picture for
which they have been sitting os a
queen or some great danio becomes
popular , they will say , when asked to
pose as a peasant or servant girl , that
it will bo impossible ; their manners
ire too lady-liko or their hands and
foot would betray them. They are
vain creatures , and do not scruple to
say that without their aid success
could not have boon attained. But
these artists are generally an easy
going sot , and indulge thorn in their
little vanities , content if by so doing
they are kept in good humor.
'Thoro is a story that comes to us
from the other side , of a jolly young
peasant girl who had run away from
homo in Brittany and came up to
Paris to do whatever fell in her way.
It fell in her way to sit as a model for
a celebrated painter , and during her
sittings she would amuse herself sing
ing all the quaint old songs of her
country-folk , occasionally varying this
by picking up a chair by its back with
her teeth and carrying it about the
room. She was too great a beauty to
remain in quietness , and finally a
rich Italian count married and carried
tier off. Not long after she returned ,
at the request of her husband , and
sat as a countess for her portrait in
the same room whoio formerly she
had danced and sung as a model. "

UNDER THE SUNFLOWER.
What Boston Followers of Wilde Call
anesthetic Costume Party.
Huston Tout.
An ( esthetic costume party was giv
en at Parker Fraternity Hall on Fri
day evening and proved a grand suc
cess. The reception cominiteomon
were decorated with badges of blue
and gold , while the floor managers
were radiant in gold and scarlet.
Most of the guests were in costumes
suited to the utterly utter occasion ,
and the sunilowor reigned supreme ,
casting its golden radiance over the
modest lity , which appeared in its own
quito fashion. Among the stunning
costumes wore the twenty rapturous
maidens arrayed in draperies of dainty
colorings , which caught the light most
charmingly in the classic folds that
were allowed to fall gracefully from
the shoulders ; the sunflower was their
bad o of honor and tower of strength ,
while folly in all her prettiness busk
ed beneath the shade of tusthocio sun
flowers. Gypsies were hill of be
witching grace , while Pomona scatter
ed her fruits with lavish hand , crown
ing all with lilies. Night was glorious
with the added splendor of the sun
flower , and the picturesque group of
Swiss peasants were also lusthetically
crowned. Sir Walter llalolgh , with
Romeo , wandered about caressing
beautiful f.iirics , and Gorman students
were numerous with colored gowns
and squaro-top hats. Oxford was re
presented by black-robed students ,
who were square hats also , Esthetic
shams were scattered about the hall ,
serving an admirable background to
the gay moving figures who hud re
sponded so fully to tlio requests ol
the invitations. No 7 in the pupils'
repertoire was a Gorman with bon
bon scarf , puss in the corner and chal
lenge figures. The party was delight
ful and thoroughly enjoyable , and
