I , .ila I'rcsi. A mechanical murvul , the product of nine jears' patient toil on the part of nn unlettered minor , who nmiio it in his "spare hours' ' in the Hnllon- hack Colliery at Wilkosbarro , _ ,000 fet't below the surface of the out th , has just boon coinplotcd in the slmpovl of olock , by .Ininoa MeUlynn. It is built on the plan ofthu | "astronomical clock" rccontly exhibited in this connj try , but is much more complicated in most of its purls , nnd derives 1111 addwr ed intoruat from the man nor of itn construction. Nine yo.irs ago Ale- .ilynn , having had much spare time on his hands , thought ho eould turn it to agreeable account by devoting his ixttuntion to wood-carving. Ho liad no tools , and to the cinstruction of these ho first directed his attention. Ho built an engine to propel a luthr , nnd from .inch scraps of old materials as ho fouiut lying loose around the colliery , put his Intho together , and commenced fashioning bus of wood into whatever forum hia fancy sug gested , Then lie concern d tlio uloa of making n clock upon an elaborate sculo , and went to work with the de votion of nn enthusiast , until at the end of nearly a decndo ho has produo- id a piece ot mechanism that is cer tainly wonderful to contemplate , con sidering the condition under which it was made. The clock stands about nine feet high , ' nnd is incased in nn elaborately carved cnso of black walnut , consist ing of100 pioct's of perfect finish. Each of thuso pieces was turned in the the mine with n tool that would make a cabinet maker smile , being nothing less than n broken saw-file Ititt the workmanship is pi < rfcct , and tlio sym metry of the 8ovur.il parts would do credit to the best wood-carver in the country. "How did 1 make my measurements ? " said MeUiynn , in reply to the inquiry of Tlio Timos's correspondent , with a shrug. Oh , 1 never rim short of materials. If ono thing doesn't do 1 take tuiothor. 1 have built n miniature engine in the Ilallenback Aline owned by Mr. Par- rish , weighing only lfi ? > ounces , and they say it is perfect. 1 used a ipnir- tcr dollar piece for a circular crank. " It really seems increitihlo that with with such tools as he exhibits , nnd in such dreary surroundinga as tno depths of the mine afford , anything like the clock could be constructedbut there are plenty of witnesses among McGlynn's fellow workmen to corrob orate his story , nnd there is the clock itself. At fust ho experienced some dillieulty in holding his lamp while ho ho worked , It did not show as good light nnj- where as when carried in his hat the way Illinois usually carry their lamps in the mine , but the Iliime burn ed the front of his hat nway nnd made it rather uncomfortable. Then he made a tin helmet , with a place to hold the lamp securely , nnd after that ho had no trouble with his lamp. In addition to thu 100 turned pieces in black walnut which comprise the frame-work of the clod ; , it has GI5 moving figures , actuated by machin ery , so deftly arranged as to produce interesting historical and biblical scenes. It is the intention of the miner to make the number of figures a hundred as soon as his meanswhich are rather limited , shall atlbrd michiui additional outlay. The front of the clock shows three balconies , rising above n massive and elegantly carved pedestal , and upon tl-eso the moving figures appear. Tlio lower balcony shows a proccsaion of Continentnl soldiers , headed by a mounted General and marching past , while the old liberty boll proclaims its welcome notes of freedmn. A senti- > ial salutes tlio Continentals as they pans , and just'itt the moment a door is opened from an upper balcony and reveals Molly Pitcher , with her can non , which she tires with startling and realistic oii-ct. To show how well the maker of the clock has considered the details of his handiwork ho hits placed a small revolving fan in the clock , to actuate after the firing of Molly's cannon , for the purpose of clearing out the powder-smoke. Similtarcoim with this the portraits of the 120 presi dents of the Tinted .States naes in panoramic review on n balcony just alxivo the patriotic tableau , of which Molly Pitcher is the central figiiroand Thomas .Jcllor on holds up the De claration of Independence. Thoapos- tolie procession is similar t' < those hitherto scon in mich clocks. The Twelve Apostles file past. .Satan ap pears , and the cock crows in warning to Peter. A lij/nro ot justice raises her scales as the form of Christ ap pears , and dining the scene a large 10- prcsenl.tlioii of death tells oil'the mill- trips upon a boll. When one sees tlio clock , the to ils with which it , was made , and hears the miner's story of how he bought the wood for if bit by bit as ho c"iild afford from his spare elm go , ho is sensibly imnrcHHcd with human possibilities. " .Sometimes , " says MriJynn ( , "I could not buy. more than -5 cents' worth of woodat u time > but I was never idle. " Ho was work ing at the clock five long years in a chamber of the mine before anybody know his secret. Then lip wan taken sick , and , during his ravings , talked continually of his plans. The > finally ascot tained from him what it was that worried him , and made him promise not to wnrl * at it for a year ; but. as soon an Ins was able to go to the mine ho WHS at his clock once more , and toiled patiently along until ho liiul it in a tiliupi ) to slum his friends. The ligurea used | in the JJiblical and historical illustrations wore cast by him in molds of his own de sign , and there is oii very little in the entire - tire dock ilmt did not cmno from his i luiliiln. N'uw that it ! in lillihlll ! I h" scarcely knows what to do with it. Ho has boon oil-rod § 1,000 for it , but ho hesitates to soil , us if ho did ho would have to drift buck to hit ) old place in the Hallonback Mine and and probably begin building another , Warm the Ohlckon Food. After an experience of Buvernl sea- SOUR wo hiivu adopted the Hyrtum aof warming the food all through the winter and cold weather , both morn ing and evening , and wo attribute the excellent laying qualities of the fowls , in a great niviuitiro , to doing this. The food , whether whole or broken , grainer or other food , oithordry or moistened , should bo warmed well before feed : ing , Some breeders , us well as farm- era , make a practice of parching corn ' , nnd \ \ ( arc assured it is beneficial. Where now ' , unseasoned corn is used for chicken food , this parching is a ( tecid od benefit , for it makes it equally good < for feeding as old seasoned corn. Quito a niiiubor of poultry nilmentu arc caused by feeding the new crop corn , and parching it will I'll'eetiully prevent , any trouble from that score. Wheat , which ia no doubt tlio boot kind j of grain for the lay ing fowls. much better than so much corn , which latter lattens so quickly as fro qiicntly [ to stop the production of vans lemiHirarily , is much improved by being - ing j , , hunted well before being fed , and then given to the fowls while yet warm , not hot. In feeding whivxt only about two thirds as much by measure. should ] , bo fed as of corn , and , when fed ( in that manner , is very little , if any more " \pemive than corn. Good , sound wheat only should bo usrd , for1 while we see no objection to screenings - 1 ings j , ' , , on the score of unhoaHhiiicss. | soi ceilings gjvo but little available food. , _ COYOTK CHAnACTbUlSTICS. Not Such ua to liiHpIro Terror llut u 1'roaclior Thought So for All That j To at In the unsettled interior of Amori en , on the great plains is found the coyote The coyote is about two | ' thirds the siy.o of a yellow dog , and looks like a secondhand wolf in Htiai hteiied circumstances. Ho bear * shout the same relation to the genii , ino wolf that the buzzard does to tin 1 eagle , or that a chicken thief does t > a modern bunk eaahior. lie has a perpetual air of being ashamed of him self , or of something ho. has done. As you catch a glimpse of him , trotting from one molt of timber to another , looking back over his ears , and with his tail furled around his loft leg , ho looks as if he wad aware that the police - lice had a clew to his whereabouts , and were working up his ease. K i one over saw a fat coyote. You may catch a young one , ciyili/e him M much as you can , fued him on canned groceries \ , and put a braes collar on him , but his riba will still bo his most prominent feature , and at the lir.-U favorable opportunity ho will volun tarily and ungratefully leave your hospitable roof , and from choice lie come a roving vagabond on the pnu- rie , living on carrion and sharing Ins meals with the buzzard. These pied- atory shadows are not at all danger ous. There is no tight in them. That a popular fallacy regarding the ferocity of the coyote exists was illustrated not long since in the re mark * made by a Northern preacher in a Bormon ho preached shortly after his arrival in the state. He said "Dear friends , methinks 1 see two men walking out on 0110 of your beau tiful piairics. They enjoy the per fume of the flowers , the swigs of the innocent little birds , andi.ithu calm , quiet beauty of your glorious Indian summer evenings. Communing to gether , they walk along heedless ( if danger. The sun sinks to rest beyond the distant horizon ; the curtain of night gradually descends and closes out the light ut day , still the two men walk leisurely along , feeling safe nnd secure. Hut hark ! What sound is that in the distance/ / What blood curdling howl makes them arrest their stops' It is , dear friends it is the cry of tlu wolves on their track- the tierce and blood-thirsty coyote in hot pursuit , ah ! And what , think you , do those two unfortunate men do' One of them , my belovcdcongregntion , realizes his danger , and running to a tree , climbs up , by the aid of a voi- venient branch , out of the reach of the cruel fangs of the relentless beasts of prey. He called unto his compan ion and said unto him : 'O my biolh- or , roach out and take hold of this branch ; climb up hern beside mo , and bo saved ! " But the other said : 'No , there is no danger , the wolves are still a long way off. 1 have time enough. ' Alas ! dear hearois , while ho was yet speaking the dreadful coyotes came upon him , and rending him limb from limb , devoured him even in the twinkling of an eye. Thus it is , ( ) careless and heedless sinnerH , that you to-night stand , " etc , etc. When the preacher concluded the services and was leaving the church he was accosted by old man Parker ( who has lived in Texas since ' ! ) ( ) , who said : "Parson , the front end of your discourse was grand and gloomy , and calculated to bluff the unconvert ed sinner. You had a full haml , and miu'ht have raked in all the mourners in the pot ; but , Lord bless your soul , you played a nine spot when you chipped in with tnat coyote yarn.
