A Tnlo of Two Coats imd Some Mouoy. Interesting Chat with iQooU Titlkor from Colorado's Mining.Gumps . - Fcnturoa of tlio Ounnleon Region. - Among the recent arrivals in tlio city was Mr. E. 0. Tnylor , genurnl suporintomlontof thoColomdu mining country telegraph system , which ia known na theGunnisoti , Created Hut to * Grand Hivor Telegraph company. Mr. Taylor is a very pleasant i\iul romarkubly entertaining acquaintance , nnd so when ho snt down lust evening , in tlui comfortable spare arm chair t without any back ) which graces the locnl room of Tin : Ilr.n ollije , it was to give a moat interesting descrip tion of the ( .iiinniaou country , tlio milling cninps recently opened , and to also toll u story on himaelf wlncli explain - plain * his present stay in Omaha and also involves the TALI ; or TWO OVKKCOATS. "Thu reason I am here , " said he , "is because , aa yon see , I haven't any overcoat , and because too of the still worse hick of having Inul ono but a finv days ajo. ; You see , up in the Gunnison country hardly anyone wears nn overcoat. The tliermoiueter may drop down to ten degrees below xero , but you won't see a half doxen men on the street with anything ex cept their jackets on. The air is so dry that the cold isn't so severely no ticed. Xow I've boon up there for two or throe yenrs , with the exception of a brief visit no.v and then tii Denver , and consequently when 1 Unight of goiuu ; to Now York city whore I expect to meet E. A. Buck , editor of the Spirit of the Times , and arrange for extend ing our present lines to Lendville , some of the boys said , 'You'll free/.o down in t lie states if you travel , and you'd better get a coat. ' So I thought I would take their advice and get ono. About this time 1 was in a good deal of trouble over one ot my telegraphic - graphic ollicus. 1 had tried half a doxoii operators there , but all had lost their grip in some way or another , got to gambling or in a row , and be obliged to skip out. Finally the idea struck me that it would be a capital idea to put a woman there if 1 could find ono to take the position. Accordingly I thought over the lady operators I had known in the cast , and at last hit upon ono working in Chicago as being the very person for the dlieo referred to. So I wrote to the headquarters in Chicago , inquir ing about her , and soon received a reply to the ell'ect that she was anxious to get a position whore she could make a good salary , and would gladly accept my oll'or. Accordingly I tele graphed her 8125 , of which $100 waste to be hor's for expenses of the trip and the § 25 to bo invested in an overcoat in Chicago , which she was to bring out to me. I received an answer the next day that she would start that afternoon. It takes about five or six days to pot to Gunnison , nnd I consequently didn't worry about the matter during that time. On the fifth day I went down to the depot in a hack , but found no one. On the sixth I went down again in a hack , but no ono came. The next day I was again on hand , but no female operator and now overcoat. Then I telegraph ed to headquarters again. The an swer came directly back : "She drew the § 125 , and has not been soon since. " What she did with that , money 1 don't know , but I'm sure I didn't get my overcoat , and the Inys haven't lot up on mo yet about it. "THE OTIIKH COAT bought in Gunniacm just before T started for tlio caat , and I wore it all right until I reached Dourer. Not having a pocket largo enough in my inner coat to carry a largo pocketbook - book in which I had various papers and about ? 5lfi in money , I put it in the overcoat inside pocket , and then hung the overcoat up in the liruns- wick in Denver. I went out about an hour , and when I returned I found that the coat , nockotbook and all had been nipped. Some audacious rascal just walked in , took the coat of the hook , andput itonasif it wore his own. So you see that there are some rea sons for my prejudices against wear ing an overcoat and I'll never buy an other if I freeze. "TIIK < UNNISON cofNTHv is what you are more interested in , however , than in my private afl'airs. What is known as the Gunnison occu pies a large range of country about 110 miles from Denver and extends over two or three district ranges and divisions of country. It includes the towns of Gunnison , Iluby , Invin , Crested liiitteH , Gothic , Schotipld , Ash- croft , Asppn and Chepeta , beside many other mining camps of less pretensions. Of thcBO Giinnison is the largest and the center for supplies to all of thin region , Last .June there were but 1,500 people in this to AH , and now there are H,000. They are coming in nil of the time , and the progress of the place is of the substantial rather than the mining cauip order. Some Philadelphia capitalists have1 recently added several hundred thousand dollars to the wealth of the town by building good blocks and two hotels. One hotel which is nowgoini : up will cost from 875,000 to § 100,000 when it is finished. There is a pleas ant society in the place despite its many rough features , and some very elegant ladies are to be found at the head of social affairs. TIIK OTHKK TOWNS are all thriving , and Ashcroft espe cially so. This place , in my opinion , will bo a second Leadvillu in rapid growth , and 1 should not bo surprised ut seeing 5,000 people there by next May. The mines around Asheroft areof wonderful richness. Two huge smellers have been erected recently , fach f which is larger than any others in the mining country. Capital is being put in and a great influx of people is pretty sure to follow. rOAL ANI > Oil. . "Tho resources of the Gunnison country are as varied as ita climate is variable. Coal and oil are found , the former in abundance , and two promis ing wells are being sunk near Huby for the latter. Of course , there is little work done tin the mines during the winter , because of the snow , which is five to six feet deep ill points. It is quito a curiosity to leave thu mountain * amid snow and ice. and travel to the junction of the ( iraiitl and Gremi mow , whore the urass h growing a foot high and cattle pas turing. W. M. Springer , llouaoof Kep- resontativos , Washington , D. C. DUAU Snt ; We Irivo this day made , at your request , a careful medical ex amination of Mrs. ! Mary T. Lincoln , widow of the late President , Abraham Lincoln , at present residing at No. II ! ) West Twenty-sixth street , m this city. Wo find Mrs. Lincoln snU'ertng from chronic inflammation of the spinal cord , chronic disease of the kidneys and commencing cataract of both eyes. The disorder of the spinalcord is the result of an injury received some time since , and has resulted in considerable less of power of both lower limbs , so as to lesson their use and to render walking without assist ance impossible. Thu nature of the spinal trouble is progressive , and will end in paralysis of the lower extrem ities. Connected with the spinal dis ease and one of its evidences , is the reflex paralysis of the iras of the eye and the reduction of the flight to one tenth of the natural standard , togeth er with much narrowing of thu field of vision. The sight will gradually urow wornu. There is no probability that there will bit any permanent im provement in Mrs. Lincoln's condition coiiHJdeiing thu nature of her disease and her age. She is IKJV quite help less , and unable to walk with safety , without iho aid of an attendant , or , indeed , to help herself to any extent. She requires the continued services of a nurau and nho constant inodicul attendance.
