UNLOCKING THE SKAOKLES ,
V slilHY BY A t'UCMIKKSMXX ,
Tlio sun was just setting , i\t the
close of u lung h. t day in .lutio , when
Krnest Hlaek and myself drove our
wagons up to the b.ink of Ued river ,
on tlio Indian territory sid ' . Wo
were hauling freight for thu I'liiled
States government , and wore on our
way to Texas for a load.
Wo signalled the ferryman , living
on the Texas side , and us soon as ho
came over bog.ui to cross. Tlio boat
\vn. t too small to put over both wagons
at once , so 1 crossed first and c.iiuo
back to assist Ernest.
Ho had two refractory mules , which
had always to bo hold in a ferry-boat ,
nnd it somo'imcs took both of us to
do BO.
.just as the ferry boat neiircd the
Chicknsaw Nation side u large , power
ful horse , but evidently nearly ex
hausted , came into view around a
bend in the road , si double burden on
his back. A younger man of noble
appearance , but looking weary and
harrassod , rode in front , behind
beautiful girl , nearly white , but with
suflicietit Indian blood showing
through the clear skin to add a piqu
ant charm to the features.
They rode up to the wagon , and
the youtip man , without dismounting ,
spoke to Ernest. :
"Sir , I am a white man , and some
days since had n quarrel with another ,
in which , unfortunately , he was ac-
cidently shot I am pursued by his
brothers , who are close behind , and
who have sworn to kill moon sight. I
ask your help to crosn thu river , if pos
sible , unseen.1'
"Why do they " began Krnest ;
but the stranger cut him abort.
"Time presses ; sir ; you must an
swer 'yes' or 'no ! ' If not I must do
tlio best I can fo. myself. I dislike
to shed blood ; but if 1 am too closely
pursued " and the gleaming of the
blue eyes finished the sentence.
Ernest took another look at the
open , manly face , which , whatever
might bo written there , showed no
tniuo of crime.
Then ho apoko , and fast , for the
trampling of horses' rapidly approach
ing could now be heard :
"I suppose you wish to take the
lady with you. Got into wngon , and
under a wagon sheet which y.in will
find there loose. T will hide your
horao in the bushes. "
.The young man dismounted , as
sisted nil' the girl who waa riding be
hind him. , and did as directed , cower
ing down in the bottom of the wagon.
After depositing the sheet so as to
look as if it had only been carelessly
thrown in , Ernest led the horse a
short distance- from the road , and
after having taken of saddle and
bridle , turned him loose and returned
to his toam.
1 had ivitnessed tlio scene from the
boat , which by this time had reached
the bank , and the wngon drove in.
After giving the ferryman a caution to
silence , Ernest turned to me :
"I may bo helping a fugitive from
justice to escape , but I will risk it.
Loose the boat and put oft" , Beochor ! "
ho added to the ferryman.
At this moment , however , a pair of
horses covered with dust and sweat
came roand the turn in the road , and
their drivers drew rein at the river
aide. They were two powerful , evil-
looking fellows , with belts stuck full
of revolvers and a rifle across the pum
mel of each saddle.
The older-looking ono of the two ad
dressed Ernest :
"Have you seen anything of a man
and a woman on one horao any where
here ? "
As ho spoke his eyes roamed to the
wagon and sheet in it and both man
dismounted.
"Why , what do you want of them ? "
asked Ernest.
"Ho has killed a man in the Chor-
taw nation , and is trying to get away ,
the woman with him. If you help to
get him away it will bo the worse for
you. I-boJiovoho _ is under that sheet ,
anyhow. "
And ho stopped on the terry boat.
The other remained on tlio bank , with
Ilia hand on a pistol , ready to assist
liis brother.
The ono on the boat approached the
wagon and was about to raise the
sheet , when Ernest , with hia eyes
gleaming dangerously , spoke to him :
'This wugon is in the employ of the
United States government , and no
ono but a , rou'ulnr authorized official
can search it , "
The fellow persisted , however ; but
as ho laid his hand on the shoot a
well directed bK w from Ernest floor
ed him ,
The and on the bank started to
draw hia revolver , but buforo ho could
Jo so I had him covered. Ono learns

Thu ferryman , terrified at the BCODO
before him , had remained quiet , but
now , at a sign from Erneat , pushed
tlio bout from the bank.
Ernust keeping the prostrate man
covered with his pistol , spoke to the
ono loft behind ,
' I shall take your companion with
us IIH a hostage for your good conduct.
Jf you shout after us , ho suflers , rj-
member ! "
Wo crosuud the river without acci
dent , the biifllod ruflian on the bank
milking the air resound with curses.
Whim wo reached the Toxua aide ,
Ernest turned to mo ;
"Frank , drive my wagon up the
bank to where youra is , while I SPO
this follow luck across the rivor.
Heechur , take your akiff and row him
over ; ho will hardly hurt you. If ho
tries , I will put a bullet through
him "
After seeing his captive into the
skiff , first discharging all his weapons ,
ho apoko to the now cowed man ;
"When you get to the ether side ,
stand on the bank until the boat ro-
turns. If you attempt to go into the
bushes , or try any other treachery ,
I will shoot you. "
Tlio ferryman put him across the
river und returned , nnd Ernest came
up the bank to where tlio wogona
woro. Meanwhile I had bnvon up
the hill and relieved the occupants of
the wagon from their uncomfortable
covering , They were nearly smothered
but had made no movement until all
wai safe.
The young man jumped to the
ground , and , with a aimplo grasp of
the hand , nnd the earnest words , "I
thank you both , " assisted his emu
panionout. "
Krnest now came up , nnd to him tin
stranger turned :
" 1 owe you my life , and if ever 1
can in some measure pay so atv.ii
a debt , trust mo I shall not bo want
ing. "
" 1 am glad to have boon of aeruri

After some further discussion itw.is
arranged , and wo wont into camp.
SuppiT ever and the horses staked , > tl ,
the young lady retired to ono of tin-
wagons , while the rest of us , at some
little distance , reclined on the blan
keU and noddies , guarded by mir
faithful dog. Nothing could eomo
within a hundred yarim of the cnuii |
without his tjiviug us warning.
Then the stranger , whoso name WM
Herndon , gave us an account of how
ho happened to come to the river in
inch A plight.
"Some months since I was in tlio
( . 'hickasaw nation buying up cattle ,
when I became acquainted with a Mr.
Williams , who had married and sot-
tied among the Indians.
"I found it convenient , to ! { o very
often to his hunso , after cattle , 1 per
suaded myself at first , but 1 soon hail
to acknowledge that the attraction
was his daughter Lily , the young l.nly
who is with me.
"Sho is only an eighth Indian , \voll
educated , and as to her beauty you
can sco for yourselves. She soon be
gan to look with favor on mo , ami 1
askud her of her father , lie was
willing , and wo were engaged.
"But there were three sons of the
old man by a former inarringo with a
white woman , who bated mo from the
start. I think they had hoped to et
possession of Lily's property , but
know , if 1 married here , there would
be but little chance of thnt. Mnttcis
went on , however. I was too haupy
to care much for them , although they
became more unbearable from day to
day. They bore no good reputation
in the country , and I was warned
iigninst thriii more than onco.
"TliroodMysago the explosion canto.
1 was walking with Lily , when the
youngi's' i f the three mot us , and ,
nftor n fi-w insulting words accused
mo of dishonorable conduct.
"It was morn than 1 could stand ,
nnd 1 sprang toward him to strike
him. lie attempted to draw a pistol ,
but I closed with him and attempted
to take it away. In the struggle the
pistol wont oil' , and ho was shot ( load.
1 stood for a moment stunned with
horror , when Lily's voice roused mo
" ' ( ) h , fly , ily ! The others will lull
yon when they see you. They will
swear it was no accident ! '
' ' 'Not much of an accident I I saw
the whole thing and ho shall swing
for it , " said a voice behind mo.
"I turned , and there stood one of
the other brothers , with leveled rillo
bearing directly on me. I attempted
to sneak but ho would not allow it.
" March straight to the house and
if you try to got away I'll kill you
like a dog. I would shoot you now ,
but for the pleasure of having you
hung I'
"My own protestations , Lily's tears
and entreaties , were of no avail , and
to avoid immediate violence Ifhiiught
it brat to comply.
"On the way to the house wo wore
joined by the other brother , and ,
after a few words in some language
unknown to me , they both hurried mo
on. The old man was not at homo
when wo reached the house , and iftor
another consultation they chained me
securely , and then made preparation
for a jouri 8y.
"As I gathered from hinls - pur
posely lot drop-they intended to take
mo to Fort Smith to bo tried I did
not exactly see the object of this since ,
if the caBo was ouco brought to trial ,
I could easily bo cleared by Lily's evi
dence.
"After Bonding some of their ser
vants to bring in the body , they
mounted , mo on a horse , tied my
liands behind mo and my fool under
the horse , and , with ono riding before
and the other behind , wo set out.
"Lily beguod to bo allowed to go ,
but they refused. It was a lonely
country where Mr. Williams lived , no
liouse within twenty miles , or she
would have gone for help to stop
them.
"The first day's travel passed with
out incident. My captors were taci
turn , saying nothing to mo and but
little to each other. At night they
loosed my hands sufficiently to lot mo
cat , which was a little more than I
expected ; but after supper my hands
ind foot were securely chained , the
chain carried around a tree and
fastened with u , padlock.
"The next morning our journey
wns resumed. Wo had reached the
Iviainaiiu mountains , over which wo
were going by u bridlo-path wild ,
desolate region , lit place fora deed of
) f crime , I began to fear , from the
ooks and words which paused from
me to tlm other , that I would never
reach Fort Smith. It would bo an
cosy maUcr to kill mo , oust my body
down into BOIIIO ono of the ravines ,
ind invent some plausible excuse for
my disappearance.
"As night came on they frequently
stopped und hold consultations with
eaclMthnr , easting the wlnlo glances
of mingled halo and triumph on mo.
[ t was easy enough to toll the moan-
ng of this , but even if I had condo-
icended to entreaties , it would have
jcon of no avail.
"Lot my fate bo what it might , I
mist moot it in silence. Many were
ho thoughts which passed through
ny mind on that hurried ride , but it
a needless to dwell on them.
"Tho night of the second day wo
camped on the edge of an old field ,
; rown over with brown grass. The
lanio precaution ) ) were tuKon as on
ho previous nicht , und soon my cap.
.ors were wrapped in slnmbor I
uiew that in all probability it was my
list on earth , and many conflicting
emotions filled ' my mind , driving
tway sloop , j'itit chielly I thought of
Ld'ly , my prairie llower , U > ft to the
norcy of those rude men.
"About midnight my meditations
were interrupted by a s < ift rustle bo-
lind mo in the bushoH , but before I
could speak or make u motion a voice
whoso musio I never oxpuctod to hear
on : arlh again , said 'Hush ! ' and in a
moment Lily was bsidomo.
"Then with her arms around mo ,
hnr lips close to my ear , she told that
she had overboard her brothers talk
of killing moon the way , being afraid
to do nt homo ; had caught two of her
own horses ( the best in the country
and hud followed with the hope of
rescuing me.
' 'She had a key which she thought
would open the padlock fastening the
chain that hold me. The padlock was
ono of the spring kind , with the key
hole , a simple slip , at the bottom ,
The kov is a plain , tint bar , with
various indentations in it to lit the
wards of the lock , and by simply
pressing on it the lock ( lies open.
"Lily tried the key but it would
not fit. As 1 could see by the moon
light , an expression of dismay tlitted
over her face and she pressed hot-
hands to her bend as if to think. As
for me , 1 had so long given up all
hope of lifo that 1 sat in silunco , nwnit-
ing what she would do , unable to oiler
any suggestions.
"Thou , with the murmured words ,
'It may do ! ' she loft mo for n moment ,
going into the old field. Then she
returned , bringing a handful of tlio
broom-grass with her. Selecting a
twig of thiiitlu of just sufficient diam
eter to till the slit in the bottom of
the lock , she thrust it perpendicularly
as far as it would o , broke it oil'a
ouartor of an inch from the lock. She
did this with other straws until the
whole koy-holo was full , breaking
them ofTovonly only on the outside ,
though , of course , the inside unds lit
ted into thu wards of thu lock. Then
she pressed on all the cuds and the
lock ( low open.
"So quietly that not a link rattled ,
Lily unwound the chain and I was
once morn free. Wo started for the
*
horses , but unfortunately had gone
lint a few feet before I stopped on a
dry stick , which broke with u loud
crack. Lily's hrttthcra were light
tdoopors and they awoke immediately.
Not fleeing mo , tiu-y rushed hither
and thither in search , and just as we
reached the horstis ono of them HCOII
us and fired , killing Lily's horsu. In
a moment 1 had seated her behind
mo , and , concealment being no longer
posniblo , rode away at full speed.
"They saddled and came hard after
us. Wo kept our distance ; but on
account of the double burden which
our horse carried , were never able to
got far out of hearing , while they fol
lowed with the persistence worthy of
a bettor cause. Not daring to stouin
the Indian territory among the Chick'-
a.ww nation , 1 rode for the river ,
which 1 fortunately reached just in
time to meet you and balllo them.
Our horse , good as ho was , was near
ly exhausted , and could nut have car
ried us much further. Thanks to yon ,
I hope wo ari > safe now. "
The story was ended , and wo were
u'oon asleep. In the morning wo took
Herndon and Miss Lily to thu rail
e > ad , where they took the train for
Fort Smith.
Wo received a letter from him after
ward. Ho stood his trial , came out
clear , and married Miss Lily. The
Williams boys wore soon afterward
both killed in a drunken frolic , ending
in a light.
