UIJTUOIT , Mini. , January 15J. A celobrattd ca.tu reached a conclusion in Iho supreme court to-day. It was x suit for lil > ol brought by lluuh S. 'ooplcs asainBt ; The Evening N'owc , and was the mitgronth of a jml.lica- ion referring to ono of the moat horrid rid crimes ever committed in this comuiunilv- March , 187' ' , two nun found tlio body of a well dretscd woman tloatinp in the river , juat be- ow tlio city. That a foul murder liml accn fommittud was ovidvnt. The woman had boon -jngiied , her hands ied buhind her , the body had been jent in n lectimbont position and tied .ogother , after winch it wns placed in \ colleo Rack , which had been after ward sewed together. A postmortem - tom examination showed that the ioccasod had been aud'ocattd either by Irowning or otherwise , and that she liad bornRcliildren. The remains were > rought to this city for identification , and were viewed by thousands , but iono know the form or feature * of the unfortunate , The police put forth every ellbrt. No less than twenty-six missing women were hunted up , but none proved to bo the dead. Finally , in Juno , 1880 , a Mw. Canton called at police headquarters and identified the : lothing na Imvinir once belonged to a jirl known as Martin Whitla , who liad been missing for more than a year ind a half. Martha wna thu daughter of people who formerly lived near East Liverpool , Ohio. lUr parents died durintr her infanuy , and nho was adopted by one John Whitln , who sub sequently settled near Detroit , In her girlhood M artha lived in the Poodles family , and after Hugh's marringu passed her time either in this city or the neighboring villages , earning ; a livelihood as a seamstress. When the body was identified , Tlio Kveninif News stated ; hat the dead airl had been in the employ of 1'ooples , who at ono time { opt a hotel here. Peoples then called on the police and induced them to arrest two brothers named Thi'iss , living on n'farin in this county. Just lioforo her disappearance Martha had livort in the family of the older Tlieiss , ind it was alleged Hint having boon intimate with the boys they had an object in putting her out of the way. Pooplps employed n lawyer to prose cute them , but they were discharged on preliminary examination. Lait Hinnmor The Evening News published an article implicating Peoples ples in ( ho murder , but without men tioning him by name. Ho at once sued the naper for libel , when The Post and Tribune denounced Peoples aa the airl's destroyer , and ho com menced proceedings ng.nnst that paper. _ The two newspapers pooled their issues , employed the leading lawyers at the bar , and put in pleas of justification. When the present case was begun , counsel for The Evening News pave notice that they should proyo that Peoples had a mo tive for killing the girl , and show , by competent testimony , that ho caused her to bo put out of the way. The court held that Peoples was vir tually on trial for murder , and hence considerable hearsay evidence has been excluded. The plaintiff have shown that , ivhen Peoples and the girl wore young , ho seduced her , and that sh * not only met him clandes tinely , but nt one time lived with him as his mistress ; that at the time of his marriiig ho gayu her A note for S-100 , which she had in her possession on the day of her disappearance , and has not since been seen ; it has also been proven that she persisted in dunning him for money on this not" . The defense has traced the prl's movements from the time she started to Detroit with the intention of get ting money of Peoples , until her "un- trance with him into the den of a well-known abortionist , \vhero , it is charged , aho wa chloroformed , bound and gagKed , and from thence taken to the river and thrown into the water. The case has occupied the time of the court for several days , and its progress has been carefully watched by the people of this city and state. In the minds of the majority there is doubt of Peoples' complicity in the murder. The case was given to the jury this morning , and after deliber ating nearly seven hours , they re turned a verdict for the defendants The announcement wim received with tremendous cheers by the immense crowds in the court room. The victory for the press is a sweep ing one. There has been some talk of arresting Peoples , but it is not thought that such action will bo taken. The assistant prosecuting attorney says them could bo no doubt of estab lishing a motive for the crime , but thinks it would bo cliflicult to secure u conviction , unle.ss additional testi mony could bo produced. LATIIII A now I urn was taken in the libel suit C.IBO thin evening. About 8 o'clock , Hugh S. Peoples , p'ainliU' ' , was arrested on complaint of the proaccuting attorney , charging him with thu murder of the girl Martha Whitla , and ho now lies in jail. It is hoped this now move means n vigor ous proHccution of the inquiry aa to the perpetrators of ono of the most damnable murders over known in the criminal annals of our city. Anthracite Coul.
