OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 18 , 1882. PUEBLO'S GREAT POINTS A New City Riainpf Out of the Desert in Southern Colorado. Snrrotmdod Inoxhnnttlblo Bed * of Conlt Iron nnd Proo- louti Motnl- The Plllsbury of the West on tlio South Bank of the Arkansas. 1. SotiVit T'tT.iiLo , Col. , January 12. I moved to this i > lnco on the first of November , sorry , indeed , to part -with hundreds of Nebraska friends. I take pleasure through the usual channel of your columns to reply to numerous letters of inquiry , and alsti to give your readers some knowledge 'of"this vast mountain road , all so un like your ' grand prairie state. Yet Colorado and Nebraska are neighbors , mutually deuundcnt on each other. Ono has endless supplies of coal , iron nnd precious motnh ; the other has the needed products of the soil. I hax'o waited some lime before giving a description in order to take in the points and to look over the prospects , and I urn firmly convince' ] , with thousands of others , that this is destined to bo one of the great cities of the land , nnd that within twenty years it will reach a population of 100,000 , Landing in Chicago in 1844 , when that cily was a more vil lagu , I have had a chance in several of our western states to watch the growth of these great centers and atudy the sources of their prosperity. Omaha has the great advantage of po sition , boinx the center ot vast rail road systems with a backing of a fer tile and productive state ; but at the ame time Denver , off on a side track , under an oppressive system of trans portation , has kept pace with her Ne braska sister and prolubly claims greater wealth. Denver has grown up out of the vast mineral resources of this new state , and that , lee , when slip luis had but a limited access to this immotiBu territory. Pueblo is now the gateway of those mountains of treasure. The plucky Denver & Rio Grandu narrow jznugu is pone tratin this rich land , going through canons , creeping through the valleys and climbing the mountain side , inu oven ainonir ( lie clouds , two miles above the sea lovt-l , and g.itheiiug up immense troa'iiros and bringing them to this great center. The southern and Western parts of the state are just uncovering their treasure ? , and the numerous arms of the Denver Ilio Gr.mdo are connecting this now territory with this point. In these iiotv regions mines worth their millionn have been discovered and thotisiimlH more with tjood prospects are being developed. For instance , I met a gentleman yesterday who has u mine worth 8200,000 , and even common laborers hero , many of them , have an interest in several mines. No one knows how many obsourn Tabors ore now A-alkinij these stredts , or how ' many millionaires are now in coarse garments driving the plane or lash ing the mule. I called on a man a few days ago , a carpenter , who had an interest in six mines , all of them of great promise , and one had just boon stocked for two millions nnd they are putting the shares on the inarkot , and yet the man is poor and lih family in need of many comforts , on account of this pressure f < ) r the present , but he hopefully looks through all these dilliculties to the golden future. His wife in the mean time is homesick and wants to go back to Illinois | f they novnr have a i cent. A teamster who hauls for me occasionally has come in from the , , , mountains to get work for the winter. Ho has six mines. Our grocer has an interest in several , hut most of these are in new districts just opened I . by railroads , and many of them are very productive mines. Pueblo is the winter retreat of the minors. When the deep snows and the bitter cold settle down on the mountains many come hero to winter , ami many have , their homes hero. Yast smelting _ works , covering ten acres of ground , 'are already in operation hero , employ ing 250 men uirl reducing daily 12fi tons of ore , and yet thov cannot begin - gin to do the work , nnd I understand the company expect to double their 'capacity nrxt year , and then they cannot meet the demand. In a few years there must bo others on a large scale to do the work. Pueblo is ono of the lowest point * in the state , This gives a mild witi' tor , during which work of most kindt . can bo performed as well as in sum mer , and also it has the advantage ol down grades , and immense trains o ! coal , iron and precious ores can be , brought in at little expense. The nl titude of this town is about -J/jOO feet , and many of the mines are above , timber line over a mile high. Communication with the east is via the Atchison , Topeka & Santa 1 \ ( railroad and Jay Gould's routes. Tlieso roads combine on freight , and H is high. Wlmn the Hock Island - nnd 0. , 1) . fe 9 , reach hero , and the Denver * Now Orleans reaches us , as they will in a few weeks , you mav " look out for cheaper freights , anil there is no reason why supplies can not bo had hero as cheap as in Ghira go. This will bo a great help to No broska and will raieo , the value o products and farm ? , and it will al bring wages hero down to caston prices , so that Pueblo can readil' cotnpelo witl Pittsburg , and , beside equal facilities for manufacturing have the vant advantage in saving o freights. Now , there is no poin west of Pennsylvania where iron ca bo manufactured as well us here j I The ere is all that can bo desired , nil the coal fields nro boundlets , ISot are as accessible OH atthat great centi of the iron interests at the cast. Now , add to all these natural at vantages the fact that n strong coi i partition , the Colorado Cost & Ire company , with u capital of five mi lions , is making a strong effort t build up a manufacturing center hpn ' and you have assured success. Moi * ' 'of our cities grow by tlio accensioh c individual interest , but hero you liav nil Hit and the backing of such ontei prise and ctpital as has never bofor reinforced a now city. Ovora millie ' has already boon expended in build , ings nnd improvements. There nro probably no such colosunl works in all thn vest as they linvo now urcctud nmid the cnctua buds of tlio great desert. Around these viut works n young city la growing n mile or so away , and constant improve- nients nro going on nil the while. This company emu inoit of the lote in South Pueblo , nnd perhaps the only blunder they nmko ill their magnifi- ccnt plans is in advancing their lots more rnpidly limn circumstances will warrant. In doing this they are driv ing scores of people over on the other side , whuro lots nro nioro reasonable. Their lots are long nnd narrow nnd when they Btnnd them on end they are too high. Vdt , with all these drawbacks thu boom continues and hundreds of buildings are now in pro gress. The wholesale trade is growing , so miiny mining companies and now towimnroBpringingupthat thin becomes a center , daily growing in import ance. Tlio situation of the town is in the valley of thu Arkansas , which cornea rushing past Luadvillu , through some of the grandest mount.tin ficenery on the continent ; then dashing and foam ing through Grand canon , it rushes between the Pueblos , There are two cities hero North aud South Pueblo , divided by the river. The old town was organized first and incunibered by debt , and South Pueblo wns organised Jator by itself to avoid a debt partnership and for other reasons. Tlio business part of thu city KCH in the valley nnd ia not "beautiful for situation. " The finest part of town is located on what in termed thu 'Mesa , " which is the Spanish for tnblu land. This in over ono hundred feet higher than the business portion , nnd a few years ngo was laid out in broad streets and line avenues by the 0. , 0. it I. company. On this mesa line residences nro now going up by thu Bcoro , nnd this pleasant winter weather sees some now skeleton of a house almost every day. This table land l.ns been planted to trees , which takes of the newness of this part of town and gives it a home-like appear ance. ance. The The soil is light and Bandy and furnishes - nishos splendid material for dust etornis. Years ago it had a thin turf of huU'.ilu grass but this is killed out and thu people hero can now have their choice Sahara and oasis. Hut little has been done in the line of her ticulture. Your correspondent isprc pnrinu some lectures on this subject , hut few trees will grow hero , among them thu .Russian mulberry , whicli has ( lone HO grandly in the kindred climate of Nebraska. Uy the way , the article T wrote for your paper on that tree , brought me a hundred iiuiuinc.H , "when can these trees bo haul" To all such inquiries 1 would say address ' 'Vnrk Nursery , " Nobr.iskn. It ia nirely that one tree combines so much of the ornumonta' nnd useful. I will write you soon ol thu mountain evergreens nnd their adaptation to thu prairies of Nebraska. There is a world of work to bo done iu the way of beautifying this ureat west witlr trees adantod to our soil and climate , but we 'havo tliom * nnd can utilize them. , From the mesa wo have grand views of the venerable Pike's Peak , whose hoary head is lifted among the neighboring heights. At aunriso and sunset the view ia beautiful , when the gold mingles with the silvery snow. ThoGrcun Horn range , Bnow-crownod , seeina very near , though thirty miles uw.iy. Spanish peaks rise out of the plain at the south , and tower thirteen thousand feet in the oky. Thu summon ) here are warm , but in the mountains nro cool and cosy nooks by thu thousand , where people who can all'ord it spend the summer. I'ueblo ia also becoming famous for mineral waters. Two artesian wells havu been sunk which have quitoii rep utation for healing properties , and much of it is bottled nnd aent abroad. These wells nroabout thirteen hundred feet deep. A strong company is now organized , nnd work has commenced on health resoit where another well ia is to bo sunk. The foundation ia laid for an observatory. The situation is fine. It is on a Bleep blnll' overlook ing the river and a portion of the city. Thu coal in this vicinity ia hku the Wyoming , very line , and wo pity our Nebraska friends now being smoked over that poor lown stuff. The anthracite buds are now openpd , and the coal dealers here put it on thu market this week. It seems fully eijual to the eastern. Now coal beds have been discovered to thu northeast of town , aud the 0. li. & Q , will run through them en route to this place. Twenty-live millions of precious minerals were taken out of the minus 6f _ this state the past year , and out mineral wealth in hardly scratched yet. In two years tlio product will probably bo lifty millions. Little farming is done hero. Farmers must plowand BOWand rcnpmidthiosh and market to gut their cosh , and tin miner prefers the shorter way ol galling his cash and done with it , Excursions will bo planned next 8um < mor to lot Nebraska friends visil us and thu mountains at cheap rates 0 , B. HAHHIHON. Asparagus Bods. Aimrlcan CiiHIintor , Much depends upon the sine of the bed which it is desired to make. II only a small one fur fa'mly ' use , tin i : it could be trenched with a spade. In thu selection of a site n good varm , sunny soil is bestespecmlly one whiuli had been planted nnd cultivated foi two years , HO that thu sod had buconu well rotted , If a large bed is dolor mined upon then obtain n good-si/.ni plough and u couple of yoke of oxei or two pair ot horses , us the grount necda to bu ploughed sixteen or uigh teen inches deep ; and in order to di this you will have to go up thu fnrrov twice , und if your plough is small yoi may have to go through every furrow but with a heavy plough and u power ful team , after starting , you may b ubloto | plough the proper depth , provided od yon do not attempt totako too wid a furrow. Do not attempt to put ii your plants if your ploughing ha given any less depth than nixtoui ( inches. Formerly this work was don with the spade , but trenching is to expensive in these days. If your Ian is in good tilth after this ploughtn apply at thu rate of oil-lit cords u manure to thu ouru. This you ca re plough in with a one-horse plougli 'ii then burrow and level off the grounil i Next mark oil" the rows three and a half to four feet apart and open fur rows by going forward and backward in the same furrow. With a shovel clean out the bottom of the furrow the width of the spade , and it should bo at least eight inches below the lev el surface. The bed is now ready for setting out plants , which latter should bo a ) eir old. You can stop into such a furrow M described above , and place the plants from twelve to fifteen inches apart , with crown upward and roots well spread out in the furrow , cover ing them ten inchei deep uith the soil from the side of tho.furrow.spread on with your hands. The roots will soon sprout , and the plants , which will soon ho up , must be hoed and have a little more dirt drawn down upon tin in. Tim operation must bo repeated as often as the- weeds start. Wnon you have all the ridges worked down into the trenches , then you can use the cultivator the balance of the season. It is desirable that the culti vator be frequently used , and as long as thu topi will permit a horse to pass through them without damage. About thu 1st of November , or be f ere the tops go to seed , they should be mow ed down and burned. Then with a onc-horsu plough run up between the rows and leave the bed for winter. In the spring go over the bed with a disk harrow and apply a coat of ma nure. Then run it over a ain with the disk harrow , followed by a com mon harrow. This work should bo done before the plants start in the spring , and after they have .started go over the bed with a bust harrow. After getting tint bud properly stun- cd keep down the weeds and bo sure to cut the tops before they go to seed. You will find it necessary to manure your bed every spring if you desire a continuation of good crops. With good culture a bed may be made to yield heavy crops for a great many years. * WyomlnK'H.Wlnas. Larmnlo Ilooniuran . The platform club had congregated iu the Thornburgh otlico this morn ing , waiting for No. 4 , which hap pened to be a little late. Judge Jones , who returned from Cheyunnu last night , wis holding forth in his usual style to a number of friends , and as the reporter approached the group , ho said : "Why , you don't call this windy.do you ? While " I was down in Cheyunno yesterday , 1 saw an empty Hour bar rel stuck up against the siUo of a brick house , with nothing to hold it in that position hub thu wind. It had been there live days. Yes , fir. The wind hadn't let up enough during that time to let it ( hop. " An old and well dresHcd gentleman who had been standing ne.ir , and had liuaid the judge's statement , replied : "Pardon me , sir , but 1 cannot be- licvo that. I have lived in Cheyenne twelve years and I have never known the wind to hold an empty bairel against the bide ot a house longer than four days. ' This started a general conversation on the subject of Wyoming winds in general and Cheyenne winds in par ticular , and a man who looked us though ho might bo a liar from somewhere - where near Hod Uutts or Shurnuu , said that sometime last spring , while in Cheyenne , the wind blew the sign ofl a dry goods store and carried it across the street and up against a harness shop , and hold it there for three weeks. As tlio parly backed away from the bar a few moments later , thu train ciuno thundering in , and the conven tion adjourned , Burned Theatres. Since 1010 , 523 theatres have boon burnt down in the Old and Now world , 'ItiO disasters of this kind having tak en place within the last hundred years ( up to 1878) ) , while from 1871-8 the average r.itu was 13 theatres per an > num.
