it was n private carriage. His curioeity

cautiously interrogated the driver ,
The old coachman was very reticent ,

that true love never ran smooth was
never more plainly illustrated than in
this case. For several months there
was not a happier pair in all San Fran
cisco. This earthly bliss could not
labt long , however. The lieutenant
was under orders to sail in the ill-fated
Jcannetto.
As the time drew near the sweet
girl became sad and pensive , and it
was a common thint ; for her to meet
her lover with tearful eyes. She told
him her tears , and pleaded with all
the eloquence ) only known to n lovuly
maiden , but her lover had been
ordered by his country to go to almost
certain death , and his honor would
not permit him to break his word ,
oven for the being ho worshipped.
The sad day of separation Dually
arrived and the two devoted lovers
parted , possibly never to moot again
in this world.
This is the sad story told in brief by
the old coachman , who related his
tale with tears in his eyes. '
"Yes , air , " aaid the old'tollow , "aho
has been n different girl over since.
They had only known one another a
short time , but 1 don't bpliovo two

couple. Why , sir , her mother said
that when the lieutenant canto to bid
her gond-by , it took two of hui brother
officers to separate them whoa the
moment of parting came. She
fainted almost ns soon as ho was out
of the IIOUHO. When she revived , she
ordered n carriage , nnd immediately
repaired to the Cliff house. AH
soon ns she arrived there , she
took a stand where who could

Neither commands nor coaxing could
move her until she wus satistiud the

returning to Los Angeles she led u re

the first Unit aho would never see her
lover again. Sno has never failed to
bo up by daylight since the Juannotto
sailed in order to read the telegraphic
news. That sir has been the only
thing that has over interested her.
When she got Tin Times this morn

"Ho weld is she ? "
"Sho w.is nineteen last Ojtoborbut ,

Kur ihu Hitki * uf the girl , if for no
other reason , it is most devoutly hoped
that the third l nt , with the gallant

This IH probably one of the saddest
storie.t thai uas ever been chronicled
on the Pacific Cou t. The young

Lady Franklin's , and she will undoubtedly -
doubtedly receive great sympathy from

by the St. Paul it Omaha Comp.xny , it

1. That the grant made to the AirLine -

part of the grunt made by Congress
for a railroad and branches , and of
that system the present North Wis

2. That the Air-Lino Company will
fail to build the line within the time
prescribed by law ; nnd
3. That the best interests of Northwestern -
western Wisconsin would bo subserved
if the road bo operated by n ii rat-class
company , able to furnish bettor facili

Christmas Weather for GO Vonrs.
A Christmas like thoono just post
soft , balmy nnd bonignnnt , more like
April than December , n second child
hood for old winter sots the world
and our esteemed cotomporarics to
discoursing upon a wanning climate
nnd a moderate season. As a mutter
of fact , Philadelphia in the last ninety -
ty years has had yearly wcatherwhich
has not varied through n span of five
degrees. In the iifty-sovon years
from J70 ! * to 18-10 no year was hotter
than f > 4 degrees (1828 ( , ' 45 and'46 ; ,
nnd only one colder than HI degrees
mean temperature , 1810 , when ice
formed every month in the year , and
the annual average sunk to 4 ! ) de
grees.
Last Christinas was warm und December -
comber has boon an opun month ; but
in 1828 December had fuw frosty
nights , the mornings were otton fog
ey , "tho fiaiiio ns dog days , " aays n
chronicle of the weather , "nnd a warm
sunny day would ensue , " and Christ
mas wits warm. The next your , 182 ! ) ,
was almost as warm. Twenty yours
later , 1840 , December was warm again ,
with a fortnight clear of frost , nnd
the noonday temperature close on to
Christmas was f > 0 degrees in the elmdo
too warm for fires ,
The oldest inhabitant , it m true ,
who is old enough to remember that
Philadelphia had good sleighing for
days before Christinas Duy , 17IO ! ;
that in 17H ! anew blocked the roads ,
and Chiislmas muilii nnd greetings
from other cities got through with
difficulty ; that the next year gave
Khtighing neatly all Decumbur , with
iuy htrci ti Christmas Day , owing to it
thaw and sharp frost just before ;
whiloin 1802 , IHlfi nnd 1811 ! deep
Know nnd wcuthur clime to zero lasted
through half the month - sucli an old
est inhabitant might bo pardoned for
believing that Christmas nhovvdd the
buiannirig of warm ChristmnHCH. Ho
might oven say in an esteemed contemporary -
temporary that "a green Christmas is
the rule of late yuan * rather than the
exception , " forgetting , ns thu old do ,
that one yuarugo Chrintmas week had
the coldest weather- minus nix de
grees for twenty-five years , with
sleighing from Christmas on ; that two
days after Christmas the year before
won the coldest day of 1878 , and that
for a quarter of a century Ducombor
ha furnished the lowest annual torn-
p iraturo for over n fifth oflho tiling
15tit it would bo absurd for our oldest
inhabitant to forget that ho had days
in December , 1820 , which went up to
liO degrees , and extremely mild weath
er Christmas , 171M , utterly spoiling
the sleighing un which he had confi
dentially counted when snow foil De
cember 10 a disappointment ho had
to hear again Ciinstmao , 1705 , after a
wouk of excellent sleighing earlier in
the month. Thu catching weather of
1820 and thomuddy Christinas ot 18111
vould linger in hin mind nnd make
him hesitnto in
nsaumiug that our
winters were warmer ; nnd if ho was a
lovul-hended oldest inhabitant ho
would conclude that , taking C'liribf-
mao weather for ninety year * , there
has boon n good deal of sninuness
iiliout it , and that memory is H bad
for n talk on the weather.

Despite the advice of many fiiendn ,
unions them Pierce Hutler , the hits-

to invest a largo sum of money in anew

felt liimiu'iully able to do this by
reason of having made a sale of some
Like Superior property. He Tilled out
n cheek on the Gir.ird bunk for a
very largo amount , and intrusted it ti
a friend for collection , When the
piece of paper was presented to the
paying teller , that ollidnl first
scratched his chin ami then went to
see thu presid'ent of thu bank who nt
that time was Air. H.ikor , father of
the Hon. George. H. Hixker. Air.
Hnkur came forward smilingly and
and said thnt while Coh.nel Forney
had quito n largo sum of money on
deposit in the bank the amount to his
credit wns not equal to tlmt cnlled
for by the check , but still if Colonel
Forney would stop down to the bank
himself , the check would be honored.
The friend returned to Thu Press
otllco in n indignant frnmu of mind
and told Colonel Forney thnt ho had
mndo him the bearer of n check thnt
had been dishonored , for the reason
that tliero was not aulllcient funds in

"Hut 1 did not go there , " replied
the friend in amazement. "Thu chuck

"Oh , yea ; you have n largo deposit

Girard bunk , however , and Colonel
Forney found to his amn/ement tlmt
hu was much richer than ho thought.
In the snno : way , when the Longaores'
bank in Lancaster failed , Colonel
Forney found that hu had a leng-timo
deposit there that ho know nothing
of. It was this iiidill'iireiico in money
matters that exemplified , probably an
well as any other trait , thu lavish dis
position of the man now mourned ;
lavish not only with his wealth , but
with thu more precious treasures of
his heart.
