The Slocumb Law Goen Into ElFecb iiud thu Salooua Shut Up. About Flay Snloon-Koepora who Will DoiU Out the Ardent. The Slocumb Inw went into effect yesterday in full force , the 1st of January being the time fixed by the city ordinance for its application. In the evening of Saturday the officers notified each liquor denier that all must close at twelve o'clock , and , for a wonder , the saloons obeyed. At twelve Saturday night everything was ahut tight , nnd nil day yesterday the front nnd back doors of saloons were omniously lonely nnd inaccessible. The board to grant the licenses met on Saturday evening , and passed fa vorable upon the bonds of forty-live saloon-keepers and eleven druL'dsts , The names of the men receiving liccnao could not he obtained for pub lic.itiun this morning , but will be fiven to thu papers this morning. Tho'only place discovered by the police to bo violating tlio mayor's order was Tinner Hall Ia4 night , whuro thu beer w.is claimed to bo llowint : freely. A complaint will prnb.ibly be filed by the marshal this morning. THE WISDOM OP IT. Enforcing nnd Obeying the Slocumb Law na It la. 'Thu Congregational church had a fair audience only last otcniiu/ , upon the occasion of the pastor's address upon this subject of the Slocumb law and thu wisdom of enforcing nnd obeying it. The address , how over , was one of a very plain and practical nature , nnd while in HOIIIO ntitements the preacher inadvertantly cited , bo- cuuo ; ho evidently hadn't investigated a la Tiilnifigo , still there was much of gojd thought and some common seiiPc which made nn impression on all who heard him. The text was from Galatina , ( i , J ) : "Let us not bo weury in well doing. " It ia the duty of every church hi tnko nn native interest in all that is good. It should live as n fteo agent , not as a fossil. In the tempearnci : work which is the I'reateat teform of the n . ' 0 , oveiy church should bi > ac tively enlisted. The Slocumb law ia being enforced and by Una enforcement 100 saloons are practically closed. This is the most noteworthy step of progress in the history of our state. One hundred Riiloons ai-o legislated out of i\istoiico. : At the iirat of April not more than half those remaining will continue to take out license nnd the number of saloons will bo reduced to twenty-five. The law is a sacred thing which it is the duty of all to obey and not disre gard. The mayor is to bo commendec for his announcement that the law must bo unforced. The beat way tc get rid of a bud law , if this bo one , it to enforce it. The saloon krepers ante to be commended that at lost thoj have yielded and have pi oven them selves law-abiding citizens There an only three out of the number whc threaten to stand out. The pooph should congratulate themselves fo : this condition of affairs , when the an loon ino.i have been so well organized The liquor dealers who are now clos ing their Omahn places , should no leave the city , but remain am go into more honorable huainecs Drinkers , too , must remember nov that the high license hasn't aided thou any. It will cause tlio dealer to ae ) cheaper whisky nt greater prices. Tin 1st of 1882 ia n good time to com nience devoting thia money fonnerl ; spent for whisky to comforts at home 'J"ie temperance people should b alow to find fault with thu ollicial who ate doing their duty and ahouh tiy to cooper.tto with them instead o nntngonixing them. In that way tin work can bo done , for the liea with thu city executive and tin conatabnlary. The preacher then went on to tofe to the crime ut Treitschku's saloon 01 Sunday lust , nnd especially dwelt 01 the importance of closing the baleen at 12 each night nnd dining the who ! of Sunday. He thought thafcgooi would come out of some of the evil in our midst , which are ntti.ictini * ai much public attention. lloeaidthn the young men of the city were ho coming aroused to a souse of tliel danger. Ho named parenta to b careful in the education of their clnl dron toward n teinperatico 'i'o. ' Cluis tiana all should remember that tin temperance movement nllec'ed oacl [ 0 person directly or through fiiend u and all Hhould unite in furtlunin : , ' it growth. At the conclusion of the addrep the choir tendered in an i xcollen manner n voluntary "IVke mot Dwell in Thy Blest Home. " SurutoRii.
