How TlmuB Have Changed.
SL Nlcholruj.
" Changed ! " exclaimed Deacon
Green to the dear Little School
ma'am a year ago coma Christmas ,
' 'I should think they had changed.
Why , many 'a ' the time I've hoard my
dear old father toll how , years ago ,
when ho and Aunt Mary were chil
dren living on their tathor'a farm in
old England , the least little present
used to delight thom. "
"They were well-to-do people , too ,
the Greens wore ; but to find one booker
or n ball or a shepherd's pipe in his
Christmas stocking would make father
perfectly happy when ho was a boy ;
and his nister thought a box of sugarplums -
plums , or n now doll , or any uiio
pretty glmcrack , was a joy indeed.
Changed 1 well , I'd ' like to know !
Why , I'm ' told that a boy of this day ,
n real boy of the period , would con-
eider himself a much-abused fellow If
ho didn't find on his Ghristmas-troo
a ball , a elx-blaued knife , n scientific
top , a bor of carpenter's tools , a
printing proea , n jig-saw , n sled , n

Thu guests all talked the matter uvcr ,
nnd they decided that the man was
going to commit suicide. A traveling
man , who had a room next door to
the solemn man , and who had pre
viously occupied adjoining rooms in
different hotels to three men who had
committed suieido , felt that ho
was about to experience o fourth
shock of the same kind , and
ho laid in his . bed all night
and never slept a wink , believing that
the next moment ha should hoar a re
volver shot or the death struggle of
his neighbor from poison. Ho never
heard a sound all night , and when ho
got up in the morning ho told the
clerk that ho was sure the man wai
dead. They passed the room and

to throw a cat ovov the transom on to

a dull thud , there was a sound of
scratching and ripping , a heavy form
was hoard to strike the floor , the cat
"permoouod1' and "aplt , " nnd the
half-dozen people out iu the hall
looked at each other wonderingly ,
whoa suddenly the door opened and
the maddest man that waa ever soon
in Oahkosh came out in the ball in his
night-shirt , hia arm nnd fnco blooding
on to the wlilto night-shirt , llo had
the cat by the hind legs in onu hand

stairs , and the man returned to his
room. Ho dressed himself , wont
down to the ollice , and paid hla bill ,
and took the iirat train south , never
having spoken n word while in Oah-
kosh , and the people are to this day
wondering whether ho was n prohibi
tion speaker , a traveling man for a
ooreot factory , or an agent for a deaf
and dumb asylum. The traveling
man who was so nervous for fear hia
ntighbor was going to commit eulcido
wishes ho had , the landlord fears that
ho has displeased a guout who might
have remained longer , and the porter
who threw the cat saya that it is the
