"They were well-to-do people , too ,

perfectly happy when ho was a boy ;
and his nister thought a box of sugarplums -

Exparimoatl j With a Cat
A few weeks ngo n man registered
at nn Oahkosh hotel , nnd waa aislguod

ho was u must mournfuMookinp man.
llo never said a word , but there nas
that about hla face nd notions that
he was laboring under aomo great
sorrow , lie had his supper taken to
hia room , nud the waiter tald the man
never spoke , and seemed to bo the
saddest-looking man ho over saw.
Thu guests all talked the matter uvcr ,
nnd they decided that the man was
going to commit suicide. A traveling
man , who had a room next door to
the solemn man , and who had pre
viously occupied adjoining rooms in
different hotels to three men who had
committed suieido , felt that ho
was about to experience o fourth
shock of the same kind , and
ho laid in his . bed all night
and never slept a wink , believing that
the next moment ha should hoar a re
volver shot or the death struggle of
his neighbor from poison. Ho never
heard a sound all night , and when ho
got up in the morning ho told the
clerk that ho was sure the man wai
dead. They passed the room and
listened , but could hear no noise , and
It was decided to look over the tran
som to see if the man was dead. It
Is not a pleasant thing to look over n
transom into a man's room , not knowIng -
Ing whether your eye will fall on a
corpa or a llvo man with n revolver
pointed at you , BO nobody aeomod to
yearn to bo the first to climb the
stop-ladder. Finally it was decided
to throw a cat ovov the transom on to
the bed , and If they did not honr any
nolsu , it wonld bo curtain that the
man was dead , and they could go on
with the funeral. A cat was pro
cured , nnd the porter , who knew ju&t
where the bed was located , waa detailed
to toss the oat over. jftHe.went up the
ladder a few stops not enough to
look ever , bo can so ho waa not prepared -
pared to look suddenly upon a corpse
and taking the cat iu both hands ,
by the legs , ho gently tossed her or
him over the transom on the bed
occupied by the mournful-looking
man. The cat was heard to tall with
a dull thud , there was a sound of
scratching and ripping , a heavy form
was hoard to strike the floor , the cat
"permoouod1' and "aplt , " nnd the
half-dozen people out iu the hall
looked at each other wonderingly ,
whoa suddenly the door opened and
the maddest man that waa ever soon
in Oahkosh came out in the ball in his
night-shirt , hia arm nnd fnco blooding
on to the wlilto night-shirt , llo had
the cat by the hind legs in onu hand
and a revolver in the other , nud
as ho struck nt the nsnemblod multi
tude right and loft with the cat there
waa the worst getting down stairs that
ever was , and the cat waa thrown ( it
the last person who wont down the
stairs , and the man returned to his
room. Ho dressed himself , wont
down to the ollice , and paid hla bill ,
and took the iirat train south , never
having spoken n word while in Oah-
kosh , and the people are to this day
wondering whether ho was n prohibi
tion speaker , a traveling man for a
ooreot factory , or an agent for a deaf
and dumb asylum. The traveling
man who was so nervous for fear hia
ntighbor was going to commit eulcido
wishes ho had , the landlord fears that
ho has displeased a guout who might
have remained longer , and the porter
who threw the cat saya that it is the
last time that ho will every try to find
a corpao by the aid of n cat.
