WJIB strnightuned iiMii | the tlnor , and
when ho arrived nn investigation re
vealed aa startling facts as over found
their way into Lciulvillo print * .
The name of the old man upon
whom death ) iad laid its hand was
Joseph Ivos , and in liia und wai eon-
"stimulated as checquurod a history us
over foil from the pen of a novelist or
romancer. Years ago ho entered Ox
ford college , the alma mater that is
ever dear in English history , an en
ergetic , ambitiuna young man , whoao
intuitive genius was the foundation
for many a briujit prediction
for his f utn . Hi * eourao in
college waa the lirht ntup to
ward its verification and amidst
the plaudits of those whose ap-
pl.tuao nas rare und dear , ho gradu
ated with honor. Tn hm Htudies lu >
had dovulojied a puculiar and m.uked
penchant for astronomy , and at the
conclusion of his term had studied the
science of the nhioa 30 long and well
that a chair wau od'ered him. Tliia he
accepted and filled for a term of years
with honor to himself am1 profit to all
with whom he was associated. In
those halcyon daya could ho hae read
his horoscope aright from the stars
whose mysteries he had studied , how
indignantly the story of the future
would have been resented !
At last a combination of distressing
circumstances lured him to leave Kng-
laud , and he eame to this country.
Some one has said that whore the
greatest battles of the mind are fought
the most are slain , and olowly the
dark cloud of insanity overwhelmed
his brain. It is needless to trace how
ho came to this city four years ago ,
and waa not long in drifting into the
position oi a public charge. A little
property in St Joe furnishes him with
a pittance every month , and in the in
terim ho was kept at the county poor
house. It waa piciful pitiful beyond
all words , to see him seated among
the paupers , listless and almost un
conscious of what passed about him.
Now and then something would flit
across his fnco that seemed almost
like u recollection of bettor und
brighter days , nnd then ho would
sink back into the dark eclipse again.
They called him the professor , because -
cause occasionally ho would speak in
a way that told his fellow unfortu
nates that ho was one day better than
they , and treated him with aorao-
thing akin to consideration. He will
bo buried to-morrow at the expense
of the county. Ilia life is the saddest
monument of the fallacy of human
hope that was over budded in our
midst.

The raising and fending of stock is
so intimately connected with other
branches of farming that it in always
a matter of interest to inquire an to
the prospects of this branch. The
more stock kept , the more manure.
Tlio more manure the larger crop ,
and the larger crops the more stock
fed , so that when once started on the
circle , the machine is complete and
supplies itself with fore and continua
tion. The soil to produce goad crops
need manure , and wo cannot have
thin without stock , and one of the
best ways to niaku it to feed the for
age und course grain ? to fattening ani
mals , and if feeding pays \ > o van
atl'ord to purchase oil meal , Cotton-
Heed moid , bran , ec. , for feeding , and
in these feeds iidd materially to the
value of the manure the benefit will
bo twofold.
The pi ice of beef munt of eourwi depend -
pond on the supply and demand. And
first , the supply is undoubtedly
limited. We have not the tigurctt of
thu ladt census , hut we believe that
thu numbers of cattle has not increased
in any faster ratio than thu population.
During the last winter thure were
more large losses among the large
herdi on the western plains , from
which it Mill take n few yours to iu-
cover. And it is held i y some who
aru well informed that the far went
will not bo able to increase its num
ber of cattle very much from that of
the lost year or two for lack of food.
It is to he sura a large territory , but
there ia a largo proportion that is
rough and mountainous , and much
that is absolutely barren , und in the
valleys nnd plains whore gnu , ! grows
boi > t it la thin compared with the
growth iu the east , and dovs now
grow HO readily who closely fed and
tramped by stock.
Sheep are increasing , and where
they go they will drive the cattle out
because of their closer cropping. Ho
that there is some reason for the opin
ion that thu number of cattle cannot
gren > ly increase in those regions where
they are most cheaply kept. The
cultivated portions of the went can
vastly increase their capacity for stock
growing , but this will not bo done
faster in proportion than the popula
tion increases. At present thu eastern
and middle states are not likely to bo
overwhelmed by the great supply from
thu hcctions where they can be mure
cheaply rained and fattened ,
The demand ia good nnd m likely to
increase , ( lur cities are growing so
lar o that they consume a u rt.it I y in-
eroaied amount of meat. Now Not k
Cuy now t 1a" an average of litXll ( )
luvul of CA ( tie weekly , or about Him-
000 mutually. The tlomaud fur in r.
tatiiui to Kngland will increiso. t'ir-
rmi t ii voiy'iiiueh cheaper , ami the
supply from home piodnctinn dnea not
keep 141 with tlio increase of popula
tion , and if thu Knplish g'Aornment '
could bo pofsitnded to relax the ab elute -
lute prohibition of lauding lt\o stock
and allow our caltlo to bo sold alive In
the market * it would civti the trade
gre.it stimulus , We think there in no
< ] ncftiion that the demand will keep
pace \vith thu supply for homo time to
eunii' .
Hut there I'M ono point to which we
wish to oall the attention of our farm-
era and slock feeders. It Mhis. The
greatest demand and the bi" t prices
are for first-class stock. Ijight , in-
feriorhalMuttenod cattle are a drug :
thuro is no place for thorn. They tire
not wanted for exportation , the eas
tern trade does not want them , and so
they aio either sold to grimier * and
feeders , to bo fed longer oraro thrown
on the homo market , already over
supplied , and iu either ease bring low
prices. Michigan needs n ureat revo
lution in eattlo raising. The larger
numbers of poorly-bred , ill-fed cattle
that disgrace the farmers of this state ,
and are annually thrown upon ( ho
market at a low price , show neither
enterprise , economy or profit they are
n disgrace which no boast of intelli
gence and thrift , no enthusi
astic support nf agricultural
fairs and farmers institu
tions and agrieuU.iir.il colleges can re
move. It must bo done by bettor
care with the highest priced land
mure expensive feeds we must have a
elasM of enttlo that will come to the
scales with 1,500 , pounds nt between
two nnd three years old , n class of
cattle that have not only growth but
early maturity. To make this im
provement it i not neeosHary to look
to the pure breed any farther than to
UNO them to cross the common utock.
The very first cross will , with good
feed , ronch the standard wo have set ,
while fmthor crosses will make
this result easy to n'hiin or even sur-
piss , and the OMnonso ia compara
tively light. .Several of the best
breeds of improved cattle will furnish
the mateiial for this crow , nnd when
dnnn there is gained HOIIIO Hal it-faction
in having an animal worth looking at ,
and there in profit in it , also.
It m thirty yearH and more since
the improved breeds of cattht worn
first introduced into this state , and
there ate still whole townships of im
proved farms where the farmers cling
to the old stock which gives neither
ploamiro of profit. The outlook for
this cliiss'JH no better not even a good.
Wo are far behind several of the west
ern states in the quality of beef cattle
we HL-nd to the markets ; while from
our situation , the valno of our lands ,
and the very force of circumstances
which requires more economy in feed

What Pnttl Say of the Singer * .
From n fhllalu'ihla ] 1'apir.
"You have heard ICtolka ( Jorstcr
sing ; what do you think of her ? "
"Yes , I heard Oerstor once no ,
twice. Oh , her voice M very good ,
but she is merely an instrument
human mechanism , without one par
ticle of expressive animation. She
cannot net. She is cold to urtistic
emotion. "
" \Vhat of Clara Louise Kellogg ? "
"KellogK is a woman I never ad
mired. She is cold nnd passionless ,
and utterly devoid of expression.
Kellogg is n much ovcrnted singor. "
"And Cary , you have certainly
heard her ? " added the reporter.
"Yea , I have , " rejoined Mine.
P.itti . "She ia
, vivaciously. a con
tralto , and the best ono I have ever
heard. Miss Cary is the very best
contralto America has ever produced ,
and her brilliant success in Europe
was richly deserved. "
"Uow do yon rate Minnie Hauk ? "
"Shu IB a true artist. I regard her
as the superior of ( lerster in every
respect. You see , Miss JIauk not
only has the voice , power and ability
to nso it , but she in an actress. She
nets from thu heart. Ah ! Messieurs ,
that's the great point. An opera
singer must not only sing , but she
must act and portray the character
with emotional intensity. All this
Miss 1 1 auk does. "
' 'Whoro is Nilssou now ? "
" 1 think she in in Paris. Poor
NilHHun ; she hnd a good voice , though
somewhat lacking expression , but
she nang night after night until shu
woio it out. Shu sini/s occaiionally
in concert , but always to poor IIDIIRIH.
NilHBon'n day has passed. "
