Tlioro wixs ovidoiitly trouliln brewing

for never before in the history of Four
Ace Flat had nil hands knocked oil'
work for a whole dny. When Abe
Tucker wixs hung , a coinmittoo took
chnrgo of the solctnonitics , nnd the
beat of the inhabitants nttundcd to
tliuir business us usual , liven when
Hud D.xvis licld four iineons oyor the
kiiiR-full of the 'Fritco , with $000,000
in the pot , the honest dcni/ons of the
tint iiulustriously stuck to their legiti
mate vocation of gouging oacli other ,
and local tradition says the tiuht bo-
twoLMi iMullitis and tlm Kid did 'not
draw a hnlf-payini ; ring aido.
Hut to-day the whole Flat was at
leisure , and it was rumored in the
morning that Buck Oalloway would
wear a plug hat , nnd posMbly a vest
wlum ho appeared on the tlehl. Unt
Lcllingwoll had bought n now blue
tlunnel shirt that morning , and itVIVR
said that ho had greased nis boot * , all
of which proved true , thousjh de
nounced as c.iuards by the skeptics
when lirst mentioiiett in tlioir pres
ence.
ence.At thu Oriental saloon thovo wnn
tripe on the free lunch table , and at
the Palace garden blue chips had uono
to § 20.
And yet it was not 11 gal * day.
Thuro was nn oarneatness in the faces
of men that destroyed any idea that n
picnic or a lynclnpg matinee was in
prospect. Besides , the constitution
of the Klat was ritrorously in favor of
postponing all pleasure until night ,
nnd so it uns manifest that that there
was trouble on hand , and trouble of a
serious nature.
During the morning it was all gos
sip , but toward noon , when Buck
( lalloway , in the much envied plug
hat , nnd Hill Letlingwoll , resplendent
in full blue shirt of dazzling brilliancy ,
with boots greased to n mirrorliko
resplendency , passed ouch other on
the street without the customary
salutation , all Four Ace Flat know
that the hour had come , and braced
itself for the oxcitomont.
Pools took n now impetus. Money
was placed rapidly , nnd in the market
loans were effected at thu heavy per
centage of four for one , which made it
easy to keep the reckoning.
"Think uho'll stay game ? " asked
Pete Wilder , as ho examined his pistol
and loaded it with grave solicitude.
"For whatever yet got , she will , "
responded Mr. David S.impson , who ,
by reason of his having added some
salt codfish to his stock of liquors , had
become a merchant and been elected
Mayor. "She'll stick like a tree. "
"And the Englishman ; " demanded
Pete , taking aim nt a man who had re
fused him a thousand dollars.
"Prottygoodnhot , " criticised Mayor
Sampson , as the unaccommodating
capitalist dropped in his trucks ; "took
him just under the ear. Yes , sir , 1
think the Englishman will stay , too. "
And they joined the crowd who were
pressing toward the outskirts of the
town.
"You say along the outside of the
wecpin , Bill ? " remarked a tall , hand-
BOIUO girl to Mr. Loflingwoll , as she
fastened her hat with n steady hand.
Life in the silver leads bad loft its
impress on her face , which , in spite of
the traces of dissipation , had still soft
lines of womanly loveliness in it.
"Ilight along the outside and for
the hip , " replied Mr. LeflingTrellwho |
was admiring his shirt with an ani
mated countenance.
"Arc wo most ready , Buck ? " in
quired a large , fine looking Knplish-
inau of Galloway.
"I don't regret the act. But I
may hold to-day in remorse as long iis
Ilivo. "
"Oh , blow that ! " retorted Mr. Gal-
lowny. "Aim low and lot remorse
keep shop while you're gone. "
Out on the mountain side wore
congregated the wealth and fashion of
Four Ace Flat. Above thorn the
trees waved musically in the summer
air , and the broad stretches of sweet
grass smiled or looked sad as the great
billows of clouds cast shadows upon
them.
The Englishman looked around him
and saw that ho wns no favorite. The
bold , beautiful fact ) of the bravo girl
had won such prejudice ai the Flat
thought it good judgment to show on
an occasion which demanded the bone
and sinew of fair play. And us ho
looked nt her , whom ho had never
seen before , the Englishman expresaed
a thrill of admiration.
Mr. Galloway raised his hat to Air.
Lcflingwell , and hero n complication
arose. Mr. Lellininwcll's hat
was old nnd mishapen , und
Mr. Galloway peremptorily declined
to accept the rising thereof as a re
turn of his salutation Mr. Lellingwoll
protested , but public opinion wnu
against him , nnd it win nt length
decided that 1 o could not , EO to apeak ,
put old cloth into a nowgiirmont , and ,
therefore , for na much as Mr. Gallo
way hud taken oil' his now hat to Mr.
Lellingwell , on the field of honor , Mr.
Lcflin wiill must return thu courtcity
by taking oil his no\\ whirl to Mr. Gal
loway.
This delicate point having been sat
isfactorily settled , Mayor Sampson
embraced the opportunity fern
n little oration , ruying in nub-
stance , that nn how thu Eng
lish bloke had busted a hole in
the gal's side partner , for which she
hud demanded satisfaction , all hu ,
Mayor Sampson , could ndd to the
proliininnrieH wan goin' in for keeps ,
and may thu bust man win.
There was not n tremor iw Bill Lei-
lingwell placed her in position. Her
face was ns calm as the air around her ,
and as she gazed upon her foe , hu who
had ouiit her husband homo with no
recognition for her in hm OVCH , a smilu
played around her lips , for she knew
ho would BOOH go down among the
roots and worms where she luid plant
ed the only thing she over loved.
"What's your woppins ? You have
the choice , " asked Bill of Galloway.
"I'm dogged if I know , " replied
Buck. "lie has got 'em there , but
ho won't let on to mo. "
Thu Englishman had heard the
question , and now advanced with u
largo paper parcel. Ho was pale , but
calm and obviously under control ,
"I have like this "
one , ho said
quietly. "At tho'lire' lot her open
the bundle , und 1 will mine , Gnu of
us will fall , if not both. "
The girl took the package and held
it firmly. Loflingwoll had won the
word , and ut his "One , two , thrno
fire ! " both papers full to the ground.
The Engluhinan stood firm , but
with a wild shriek that woke every
hiding echo in the Sierras the girl
dropped - dead !
"It's a lucky thing your English
man got out , " remarked Bill to Buck ,
n * they nietnt the Oriental dm ing the
evening , "Tho boys would nave
grafted him if ho'd staid. "
"Yon bet , " replied Buck. "If I'd
know'd what it was , ho'd have got it
from mo right there. "
"What was the wcopin' anyway ? "
askinl the barkeeperlio had not
been able to attend because > if some
financial regulation imperatively du-

OLD DARLINGTON.
A Town of Siupltnm , Smolcr. Soot
nml81nK Hills.
l'ati V'Mnclrco Chronklr
Darlington is a town in the notth
of England , devoted mainly to iron
ttnoltiug , iron rolling , nnd on Satur
day nights to boor. It th ono great
rolling mill , vthureat the furnace
il.imot , aiiioko and metallic vnpom go
up 1'iicu.tsingly dny nnd night , blncL-
uning the iiu.ivens , blackening the
houses , nnd blighting the vegetation.
The ntr , so strongly laden \\ith sul
phur and other chemicals , make n
person unused to it sick when in the
immediate vicinity of the furnaces.
Of these there nre ncres nnd milen ,
blots on thu landscape , with their
tall , ungainly chimneys , rough sheds
und awkward scaffoldings. Acres on
acres of ground nro covered with the
"slag" or rofuao of the furnaces , forming -
ing in places hills of hnrcl , vitreous ,
volcanic looking matter of IBor 120 foot
in height , or covering more ncres of
land to n uniform depth of 12 or ID
feet. It is the accumulation of cen
turion , nnd land nuiat from time to
time bo purchased at any cost in the
immediate neighborhood whereon to
deposit it. It is drawn from thu
furnaces in great iron pots , which are
run on tramways , nnd their contents ,
completely solidified , though still
glowing , are dumped over overgrowing -
ing nnd encroaching sides of these
artificial hills. So they dump them ;
so thu rounded masses , taking the
shape of the pots , lie halfway down or
nt the foot of the ' "slag" mountain ;
by day half-cooled nnd showing only
in their middle an angry , red , fiery
spot. As the shades of night gather
they seem to grow redder and redder
nnd glow in the darkness like enor
mous molded coals of fire , for the
cooling process requires days.

At Darlington , on a stone platforn
ncur the railway station , stands the
first locomotive used in England , nnd ,
for that matter , thu first on this earth.
It stands there as a memento to future
generations of the starting point of
steam transit. It is open to the
woathur , n queer , spidery-looking
thing ; fore and hind wheels of the
same size ; pistons , rods , cranks and
all the machinery atop of a small
boiler. As compared with the pas-
Bcngor locomotive of to-day , it is in
appearance oven as awkward , ungain
ly , throe-day-old colt , with hind legs
BO much longer and out of nil proportion
tion to the fore lugs , is , when con
trasted with the BUIIIO blooded animal
live years after , stripped and ready
for the race. Yet this , the father of
nil railway engines , ran from the year
of its birth--1825-until 1858
It ran over the first railroad over
built in England , that from Darling
