Hough Kuroui is announced , anil to tlio majority of leaders the uinouneotnont convoyed their first * knowledge thai the Auricnttnr.il Hurcati Im u Divi sion of I'on-stry , of which ho is tlio head. For seven months lit' lifts been ntndyinir the schools of forestrv in va rious continental countries of ISiiropo , and , having brought back largo col lection of mntcii.il , ho proposes to make rcconuncnd.itiona to congress for planting , picsorviug , and nnin- tainiug fotnats on the iirairio und dcs- ort Intula of the west. Some progress has fiho.tdy been made in trcc-cnltttro in this country. A few stntcs , by ex- mptioii from tax or otherwise , have sought to iiroiiso an interest in the subject , but for the most part loc.il uid voliintniy organizations have doiio ill the work. In 187(1 ( Mr. 11. 13. Northrup,8vorettry of the Connecticut Hoard of Kducation. distributed n cir cular niiion the sonools of that state Jug , as a good centennial move ment not to end soon lint to bo con tinued nn annual tree-planting uu liighways. llo said then , in n pain- [ ililut reviewing various educational topics , that Air , Geoigo 11. Kmcraon , iiithor of a work on 'Tito Ttees and md Shrubs of Massachusetts , " Imd- during that year , imported and plant , oil moio than oOOUOKmopi an larches of t wo yeais' growth from sued. That Lice , long one of the chief timber I rocs of Kmopo , was pronounced by iho lliislon and Albany railroad after llftcun joars trial of it in ties , as dur- nble as red civlai , and the Illinois Central to.id ollbied to cxrry the Ku- ropcan larch gratuitously to any point on its lines Many millions ot this live , and of tlio Scotch pine ( said to 1)0 ) the boat tree for poor soils ) are growing in the .weat , and ( said this pamphlet ) "in the now n'-boietum belonging - longing to Harvard Colloiio , situated in Brooklyn , ami including lt ! ! ) acres , iwo now growing over 200,000 small trees started from the seed , including ! > ; varieties of evergreens , -loO of de ciduous trees and shrubs , and II ? of oaks. " Connecticut , in 1877 , passed law otompting trom nil taxation whatever , for a term of ton yours after nn average of six feet in height had been attained , any plantation of u > y of oi ht trees named , provided tlio land BO used had not heretofore been woodland ; that it was not actually worth moro than § 15 per aero at the tiniu of planting , and that the trees numbered at least 1UOO to the aero. In Massachusetts a draft of a bill is ready for the legislature' , which pro vides that whenever any town devotes , by proper legal form , any Dart of its area to tiou-cnltnre , and whenever the appropriation for buying this tract , plus donations , equals the as sessed valno of Jho real eat.ito includ ed , the tract shall bucoino a pulilic do main , the title to voit in the common wealth , but. thi' tract , to bo perpetual ly hold for thu benefit of the town , subject to sonic restiietiom mimees- saty to quote ; the act shall not apply to any tr.ict IOPS than f > 00 acres , un less adjoining some tract which will make tliat area of continuous public domain. A State loardof ! Forestry is also provided for. The foregoing only shows thi > < ) rtt't of fouling , and is by no means a com plete sketch of fie organized move ment u-hich has resorted to statutes to work , because the speediest and the most contusions , is probably that of the village improvement aocicty. Tint ? , an item wo have previously quoted from The Springfield Republi cann year or two old , reads that "the Williainstown Village improvement Society finished last week its tree- planting , and then1 is now a continu ous row of over -loO olmn for three miles from the village to the North Adams line. It. asks North Adams people to continue the row to their village. " It is natural for North Adams to do so , and for other villagca to imitate the example sot. Hero is probably the most effective planneed ing only that some public spirited person in every village should btir about and make the start. But , as we have already remarked , the tree lines should not ntop where the vil lage ends ; they should bo continued until all the Highways become leafy lanes. The work is no very arduous one , requiring only'co-opuration and concerted action. "Tree-planting day" may bo made ono of the most delightful in the year That the mud will not dry BO quickly on a shaded road is true , but it is an error to as- mime the necessity of having the mud there. The tree.'i wiil naturally beget u desire for good ro.id.s , which do not include mud and sand , and tlie farm er who has intelligence to value a true except to fell it will not long in dis covering the economic valno or good roads , oven when they cost some thing. Do trees \my \ ! In part an answer may bo had to this if we suppose wood capable of being mined , fruit and nuts growing on vines , and then the earth to become treeless. Whew trees are wanting is desert ; where they will grow other vegetation will , and thuir cultivation is able to lemove sterility in many places. Civilization makes a mistake in viewing the for mi as an enemy merely lit cause it had the soil Hint , and counts too much on on the axe and flisccs as a symbol of progress ; trees aio closely linked with high civilization , comfort , prosperity and education , and the rule should bo everywhere that trees Hhould be everywhere the soil is not needed otherwise- this would allow all the looin wanted by cultivation , while re taining fores ) , and shades. Tlio close re lation between rain-fall , drought , and trees , is becoming Been , their intrinsic value is second only to that of miimr- alsand , no investment yields so wellfor their first cost is inappreciable. Nor is it necessary to base their culture solely on regard for posterity , which hits never done anything for w , because n decade or HO will make them useful to their planters. JJard and slow work as it is to start public move ments which do not appeal espec ially to private interest for oxamplf. in the matter of the Niagara Falls In ternational pul ; and the Adirondack reservation in this state there is u -'ratifying progress in the tree culture. An miduncu of it is the enlightened selfishness which has led some rail road companies to erect tasteful sta tion buildiiigH and to beautify them cheaply by little ( lower beds IIH well ' as to discover the practical utility as 'pleanantcr appeurunco of a grassy road-bod. Trees are a good part of the original pl.tn uf iho world , and it in sensible to discover that their do- fit ruction and repression are no im provement upon is. HoWm Bound to Dttrry HI * Son In u Civilized Stylo. rnpplllinn Time' Quito a largo body of Indians fu > camping nn tlio 1'latto river near Mr lla/.en's , and are employed in trapping One of the old men on last Sinuin ; was so unfortunate ai to loio a son who had been jick a long time. The father c.uuo to 1'apillion Monday morning , accompanied by several ot the tribe in n wagon drawn by two small Indian ponies. Ho entered the undertaking rooms of Thus. Being iufonnod that the cheapest ono , of tjio required size , nn hand waiSM , ho oll'orcd to tikn S'JO for an Indian pony colt , which he had evidently brought to town for thn purjimo of raising inonoy to procure the neerssa- tics for giving his son a decent burial The old man tnnnped around two t.r tiireo hours u ithout finding n pur chaser , when llcniy Corey , wfioi > sympathy was aroused , an well as his jflo.m of a g od bargain in horse flesh , came to his telief , and took the pony at iho Indian's tiller. The old father at once selected nnd paid for n fifteen dollar colliu , nnd loading it into the wi'gon , and taking a seat on ono end of it , started for camp. This proceeding was something un usual , in fact is , no doubt , the llrat cnll'm sold by an undertaker to an Indian at least , to one belonging tea a roving baud. hother or not ( hi1 young Indian will enjoy tlio blessings of the "happy hunting tiroiinds" to a bolter advantage in a fifteen dollar collin than ho would have simply in the protecting folds of his old seudy blanket , is a question to bo decided in the "sweet fields of Kden. " No doubt thi' old thief experiences fifteen dollars' worth of satisfaction in the belief that his departed son will bo the ccntro of attraction and looked upon as the "big medicine man" when ho finis over the river in las ( to them ) wondei fill canoe. The Mulo-Wlmclternntl the Major. M'vj. Sander , who is known in mili tary slang as a "bantam , " was return ing ono day from Itismarck to Fort Lincoln , and the ambulance in which ho was ridinj , was delayed by a team and wagon driven by ono of the clafs known as mule-whackers. The driver of the ambulance and the nuile-wbaok- er got into a wordy altercation , and Maj. Sanger got voiy indignant at what , he believed to bo impertinent l.mgtiagoand unwarranted interference in his joiitney. Jlo jumped from the ambulaiico , a Tom Thumb in sice , but a ( Jobath in fury , and exclaimed : ' ( Set that wagon out of Iho way.
