died at the plnco of his confinement
with that dread disease , small pox ,
'between 5 and 0 o'clock on Saturday
evening. Mr. Smith was ono of these
.rare characters whom everybody
liked , alwixya courteous and obliging.
Jn the position ho hold in the leading
hotel in tho' northwest , Mr. ' Smith
gained a friendship with i those
with whom ho was thrown
in contact that uvon death cannot
aovor. Some time ago Mr. Smith
visitodt St. Louis , and on returning
homo waSjtaken sick. Soon it became
evident thnt ho had the small-pox in
; a very light form. Ho wai immedi
ately removed into temporary quarters
just out of the city limits. Hero , with
the assistance of ono of our best physi
cians , ho tried to successfully bnttlu
with the disease , but all in
vain. What little vitality the poor
raicUy man had was overcome , and ho
rpnuod away at the hour above stated.
' "Mr. Smith has not boon a well man
for years , and it has boon uvident to
Ids friends who have noticed him particularly -
ticularly , that ho could not live many
years. The deceased has boon clerk
in the Ogden since it was first atartod
riader its now management , and has
. always berne himself in auch a manner -
, nor as to merit the roipect , not only
of his employers , but the traveling
jpublio generally. Ho was about aO
years of ago , and loaves a wife and
.child , who reside at Boone , in this
state.

A wealthy but thin old farmer came
into the city Saturday evening , riding
a healthy but thin old homo. They
were watched by hundreds of anxious
citizens , who wore debating in their
minds as to which ono would split
first , the old farmer or hii fine
pointed stood.

engine house , at the junction of < Main
and'Bryant street , whore it is intended
to locate the now fire engine.
ON THE UAMPAOK.
One of our well known business men
got on a spree last Friday night , and
' thinking there was a certain dark
eyed woman up a certain llight of
.stairs on a certain struct in this city ,
ataggoro'd thence , ascended the stairs
and knocked. No response came from
within. The lady bird had llown.
Ho became very angry , and swore ho
' would kick the door in unless it was

end of his foot was getting the worst

in. Ho got inside and began abusing
the bookkeeper , who stood his non-

door ho pointed tliat way , looking the
man sternly in the eye as if to in'torm
' him what ho might expect if ho did
. not leave. The merchant , thinking
he could go with less injury to his
' posterior by getting a little in ad-
iff . vancc of the book-keeper's boot , put
on full steam and went.

A man with nothing on but a shirt
and vest created considornblo excite
ment amongst the young ladies who
happened to boon Broadway Saturday
night , Judging from the dilioront acts
of dilioront men under the influence
of the stun" they peddle in some of our
saloons for whisky , the devil himself
docs the mixing. The man above
mentioned ( and , by the way , ho was
not a juryman ) filled himself full of
this mixture , wont first to Way no &
Co.'s broom fnctoiy , dolled his pants
and drawers and throw them behind
ono of the shops. Ho Ihcn wont
inside and began to throw the broomcorn -
corn nnd handles at the workman wheat
at once pounced upon him and soon
landed him into the street. The man
then wont up Sixth street to Broadway -
way , declaring that ho was bound to
John Bena'a store for a pair of pants
and woo bo to the man who dared to
interfere.

Ono of the employes of the B. ct M.
railroad company , Owen Owens , at
this point , Bent to Burlington for his
wife to como to Council Bluffs. As
soon as her arrAiixcments could bo
inadu she started. By some mistake
she left the train at Pacific Junction.
While at the depot she heard a remark
inado that a man by the name of
Owen Owens had boon murdered in
'
this city. She at once became very
much excited and took the
next train , as she supposed ,
for this point , but it proved to bo an
cast bound train. On hearing that
she had boon at Pacific Junction her
husband immediate ! } intercepted her
at Oroston by telegram , tolling her to
return and ho would meet her at
Qlonwood. Ho did so , but found her
in a sad condition. The shock of the
news that ho had boon murdered was
too much for her brain to carry. The
woman seems to bo in a dream. She
thinks that she is in Burlington , and
all efforts thus far to convince her to
the contrary have proved futilo. Dr.
A. H. Studloy , who was called on
their arrival hero , advised the hus
band to return to Burlington with the
poor woman , which ho did.
HAI ) DEATH.
The funeral of Cora Warren , daugh
ter of F. H. Warren , late clerk of
Pottawattamb county , was largely attended -
tended by the many sympathizing
friends of the family from the resi
dence of her grandfather. Services
were conducted by the llov. T. H.
Cloaland , pastor of the Presbyterian
church. Little Cora has loft a vacant
chair that novnr can bo illlod in that
household. She was a sweet , pretty
little child , the pride and pet of her
bereaved parents.
ANOTHER DYNAMITE OAK.
It is reported that another dynamite -
mite car has boon sent to this city ;
that the Union Pacific refused to receive -
coivo it ; that it was returned to the
company that brought it , and stood
on the track near whore the W abash
engine exploded.

A man from Mills county visited
ono of our dons of infamy , and hung
his coat , containing between two and
thrco hundred dollars , on the bed
post. When ho awoke in the morn
ing ho was surprised to find it gone.
Ho is still in search of the coat and
contents. Ho managed to save his
pants. If ho gets out of the scrape
with only the loss of his money lie
will bo in bettor luck than another
man from Mills county , who occasion
ally visits this city.
