growled and plunged nnd toro around
and attracted quito n croud , among
which was i nmn who remarked :
"That's a purty bravo dog ol yours ,

"I dvinno about tlmt. Xoyor uny a

"Well , hero's ono vihod'a atnnd bo-

"Yes , but lie puts that on because

couldn't got him within .1 rod of tlmt

"Couldn't eh ? Maybe yon want to

"J'nt up the money put up the

went down into his own pockets after

Tlio money was put up , the crowd
'ell b.tck and the fanner's face wore a
sinilo of triumph as ho still further
excited the dog and then slipped his
collar. With a yell of rage the
"canine" made a bee-lino for the kini ;
of beasts , and in another moment
there wus reason for a terrific yell of
ipplause. Dog and lion filled the air ,
so to say. The lion was rolled over
and over , grabbed by the throat nnd
shaken uiound , diawn across the street
nnd back by the ear , nnd when the
log finally lot up on the corpse the
jattlo ground was covered with hair
mil hay and saw-dust and glass-eyes.
At that moment the saloon-keeper
ushed out , n policeman came up , and

ihonts and exclamations and cspoatu-

"It was all in fun , " explained thu
farmer.
"Dot lions cost mo § 25 in Shceca-

Where the Train Was-
There were a dozen of us waiting nt
iho station near Strasburg , Va. , for
the noon train. Everyone had cut
Ins dinner short to catch the train ,
but the hour arrived five ton
twenty minutes passed , and then
everybody wondered what had hap
pened. The ticket rgont was also the
: cle < jraph operator. Ho was a young
Fellow of about 20 , ill-grained and
suporcillious , but impatience overcame
the fear of him , and n woman stopped
to the window and asked :
"Is the train late ? "
"Um ! " ho growled in reply ,
"How Into is it ? "
"Um ! "
Tlmt finished her , and she resumed
lior&o.it. Five minutes more slipped
away , and n verysolumn-looking nun ,
carrying a , very solemn-looking carpet-
jag , advanced from his corner and
began :
"Train is Into , isn't it ? "
"Yea. "
"IlowliitoisiU"
"Um. "
" What's the cause of iff"
No answer.
Ho hung around fora minute longer
uid then solemnly marched back to
liio seat , and gave uomo one else a
chance to get bluffed. After the lifth
ono had been turned "away u short ,
jolid , grimly-headed man who had
been whittling a nhinglo on the plat
form and softly humming"Wo Won't '
go Homo Till Morning , " entered the
waiting room , looked up at the clock ,
nnd then sauntered to the ticket win
dow and queried :
" Whar B that train ? "
The young nmn was looking over
nome freight bills , and ho did not raise
liin head.
' ' Wimr's thai train 1" repeated
the whittler in a louder voice.
The agent looked np for a'sasond ' ,
but let his eyes f.ill without answer.
"Wlmr'a-that train ! " shouted the
passqngor ns he brought his list down
on the shelf.
No answer. After waiting ten seconds
ends lie walked out doors , turned to
the right and suddenly entered thu
ticket ollico through the freight house.
Walking straight up to the agent he
reached over the table and sei/.ed him ,
pulled him acioss like a streak of
lightnim ; , nnd as ho gave him a shake
and jammed him into a eornor ho
called out :
"Whar in thunder and blazon is
that ar1 train1.1 ;
"It's it-coming ! " grasped tbo agent.
"When whar which ! "
"In about t twenty minutes ! "
"What mndu 'or late ! "
"Tho engine broke doun at Win
