found liiinsclf in n ainiill room , lu-

rojwrtor was told that hovas nt pros-

the reporter was a customer , tlio
woman who hnd given the informa
tion Inxndud him u book wliiuh fho
said contained tlio designs her hus
band was cnpnblu of executing on tlio
lunnaii cpidermia.
The book wus a curiosity in itself.
It contained about fifty criidoly use-
cutcd'and highly coloied drawings anil
designs. Tliere wore Goddesses ot liber-
in profusion , of nil sixes anil styles ,
the coats-of-arma of the United States ,
England , Franco , Germany , Spain ,
Itiilly , Sweden , Denmark and Uiisiii ;
anchors and chains ; a full-rigged man-
of-war finni ! ofl'n cannon ; ships of all
kinds ; the tlaga of d'll'erent ' i ationali-
ties ; a hnllut-girl with a very short
skirt nnd very muscular limbs ; 'i
Venus ; a willow surrounded tomb
with the words "My Mother" on its
face ; butcher's knifu and cleaver cross
ed ; blacksmith's hammer and lungs :
mermaids sitting on a reck playing ou
a lyre ; masonic emblems ; burning
hearts , eagles , lions , utc. t'liderneath
each design was thu cost of having it
executed , the prices ranging from L'o
cunts to ? ! l. It was evident that the
customers of the shop preferred real
istic pictures to allegorical hints , as a
heart pierced by an arrow cost Ui )
cents , while the design of a jauntily
clad Bailoromhracint ; a short-skated
fomiilu cost § 2.
While the reporter waa still admir
ing thuBO "worksof art , " the "artist"
himself entered , lie ia a short , thick
set imin , somp 50 years of ng' ' ' . lie
was very willing to give information
concerning ins peculiar trade. Seeing
his book of designs in the reporter's
hands , he hastened to assure him that
"them's not all the designs I kin nmko
by a good deal ; T kin tattoo anything
a customer calls for. "
"I suppose sailors are your chief
customers V
"Oh , no. Mechanic ? , tradesmen
and longshoiiimen are the class of men
1 do most of my tattooing on. 1 have
customer * from all over the United
States , all kinds of pooplc , and have
even had gentlemen come to my door
in their private c-uriiit-eB. 1 am the
only man in the city who lias a perma
nent place of business. There's an
old fellow who noes round among the
sailors on thu docks , but his trade isn't
big. "
"What designs are the most popu
lar ? "
"Well , that's according to taste or
hobby. American sailors like God
desses of Liberty , sailors of other
nations the coats-of-arms of their
country. An Indian waving a. toma
hawk is a great favorite with some
tars. Then 1'vo put many knives and
cleavers on butchers' arms , hammers
and toii s on blacksmiths. Masonic
emblems are always in demand.
Sometimes there are sailors who want
the initials of their sweethearts'
names put on their arms. Sometimes
men who hnvo been jilted by their
girls afterwards have their names or
initials covered with other pictures.
Somu of the fellows who us d 'to run
wid der machine' in old volunteer tire
department days , have had mo put
pictures of a iiroman with a speaking
ti umpet at the mouth on their hands
or forearm. Young men huvo the
coat-of-arms of their country put on.
A design of n willow-surrounded
tomb , with the words , 'To the inein-
oiy of my mother , ' is a great favorite
with old men. "
"llavo you executed a number of
designs on any onu person ? "
"Yes , I've tattooed one man from
head to foot. Hu lias a largo design
of NYaslmigUm's tomb on Inn hi cast
und smaller ligurcH of llowora , leaves ,
etc. , on the rest of his person. Uu
exhibited at Coney Island last year ,
and got § 10 a week. Another man I
almost covered with pictures wus a
Spaniard about 50 years of age. Ho
brought his own designs uith him ,
and these 1 had to put on him , smaller
or larger than the pattern. They
were1 almost all of a roligiouH charac
ter. On his back I put tlio Virgin
Mary surrounded by thirty-thrco an
els. A large pictuio of the Cruci
fixion I put mi his breast. Then
there was a picture of a blind man led
by a little girl to the cdgo of a preci
pice and saved from falling over by
an angel. Thrco mermaids I tattooed
oa one side , a rooster and cat respec
tively on ouch shoulder , and mrre ro-
ligiotiH figures on liin arms. "
"Did ho go into thu uhow business ,
too'1'
"No. T asked him if ho intended
to do so , butho said no ; then I asked
him his reasons for having himself tat
tooed all over , but ho wouldn't toll
mo. "
"Do many boys come to bo tat
tooed ? "
'HometimrH fathers bring their boys
and have tlieir name or some mark put
on Ilieir , BO that they can bo recog-
ni/od when stolen or lout , A boa cap
tain was lately drowned in thu East
Itivur and his body w.is only recog
nized by an India ink mark on hm
arms. When I wan with the army of
the I'otomuc I put the names of hun
dreds of Boldiers on their arms or
breasts , and many were recognized by
thcso marks after being killed or
wounded. 1 learned my business from
nn engraver with whom I nerved on
board thu frigate United States during
the Mexican war. "
"Wlmt is the time of the year for
your work ? "
"The winter , aa the work dries
quicker ; but I'm also busy in the
summer , nn there BOCIIIS to be more
money around , "
"With what do you do the tnttoo-
ing ? "
"With nix needles tied together in
a line , ono much higher than thu
others. Tlio wounds are very alight ,
nnd heal in a'few days , The Jiurmcxe
are the only nntion who now practice
tattooiti' ' . They IIHU n hollow instru
