HAUll CASliS.
Some of the worst desperadoes in
the South were caged in Castle Thun
der , and the discipline had to bo strict
and the vigihnee eternal.
During the last two yvars of the
war the vicinity of Richmond was in
fested with bands of robbois nnd cut
throats , who rendered themselves a
perfect terror and had to bo hunted
down by details armed to the teeth.
\Ylieii captured they were taken to
the castle and there hold until a battle
was imminent , and then smiads and
oven companies of them were marched
to the front and put where Union bul
lets would find them. But for tins
happy way of clearing out ( ho prison ,
it would have been continually over
crowded.
Over fiOO of theao desperadoes were
sent to Leo'a army at Uold J Labor ,
and tthey went into that fight like
wildcats. Inside of a week nearly
200 of them were back iu .Richmond ,
having deserted as soon as the battle
ended. Several instances wore
known where these men had joined
Union regiments , lived well for a
time , and then got back into the
southern lines with more or less plun
der.
UIISTLKHS HVn.NAS.
Little trouble was had with the
Union prisoners. All of them re
alized that an escape from the castle
meant certain recapture within a few
hours , and therefore they killed time
as best they could. Not so with the
Confederates , however. Almost every
hour started a plan for escape , and
dozens of them were shot while carry
ing out their plans. The dug into and
under the walls and through partitions ,
and one night novon of them dropped
twenty-six feet into a court-yard , un
locked two door with a spike and apiece
pieceof wire , and killed two guards
before securing their freedom.
rim COMJIISHAUV.
The commissary at Castle Thunder
drew all the provisions for that place ,
Hibby IVison , Hello Isle , and the same
wagons which delivered at ono place
delivered at all. For the two years of
which Federal prisoncrnjhave complain
ed HO much , tins commissary waia man
named Warner. It may aitonijli Homo
good patriots to bo further informed
that this Warner wan a born north
erner , who lived in Now Illiquid un
til five yearn previous t. ) the war.
Such are the facts. It was lound that
ho was receiving presents from noino
of the contractors in Richmond who
wore furnishing the three prisons , and
an investigation showed that ho was
defrauding prisoners of their rations.
When ho found thinjja getting hot for
him , he charged the commandant of
Castio Thunder with cruelty to pris
oners. This charge was investigated
by the confederate congrufs , and the
finding wim that if any cruelty had
been practiced , "Warner himself was
the guilty party.
THAT m.ooniiGi'M > .
It Inw been asserted by half a acoru
of eoldiet-authors that a monster
bloodhound was kept at Oastlo Thun-
d ; r to pursue Union prisoners who
might escape from Libby or JJollo Isle ,
It took one whole day to get nt the
facts of this dog story , but 1 got them.
The dog wns brought to llichmond
a year before the war on n Russian
ship. Ho was an aniinrl of iminonsu
size , being able to eat oil'an ordinary
table , and was used in Polish Russia
to hunt wild boars , lie was con
sidered a great curiosity in Richmond ,
and I traced him through live dillerent
owno a before ho reached the com
mander of Castio Thunder. The dog
went there because his mnitor did.
Ho was the soul of good nature , and
would iilay with anyone who would
miiico liiin. Four of his owner told
mo that ho WHS never known to bite a
person , and for his chasing prisoners
it was all bosh. It was only at rare
intervals that p.rinonor escaped ,

"svnmx : DKVTII. "
Ono of the occupants of the I'-isth-
in the winter of ISdl-i" ) was n Uvlornl
naniod .l.xmca Hancock , claiming lobe
a scout attached to Grant's army.
llo was captured under circumstances
which sumued to prove him a spy ,
and while waiting for h'ts
case to he investigated ho was
sent to Castle Thunder. Han
cock was a jolly , rollicking fellow ,
having wonderful facial uxiircsunn.
and great powers ot mimicry. One
evening , while singing a sonu fur the
amusement of his fellow-prisoners ho
suddenly stopped , threw up his hands ,
staggered , anil then fell like a ba of
sand to the lloor. There was i reat
confusion at once , and as some ot the
men inspected the body and pro
nounced il without life ; the guards
wore notified of what had occiim-d.
The post suryeon waa called in to nay
whether it was faint or a case of sud
den death , llo had just come in
ftorn a long , cold tide , and his exam
ination was a hasty ono.
"Dead as a door-nail ! " ho said as ho
rose up , and in the course of dventy
minutes the body was deposited in a
wagon and started for the hospital , to
bo there laid in a cheap eollin ami for
warded tothoburying-placo. When the
driver reached the end of his journey
ho was gone ! There wai no tail-lxr.ml
to his vehicle , and thinking he might
have jolted the body out of the way ,
ho drove back and made inquiry of
several persons if they had been a lost
corpse anywhere.
TIII : SCOUT'S HOLD VI.AX.
Hancock's "sudden death" was a
part of his plan to escape. While he
had great nerve and an iron will , ho
could not have passed the nurgeon
under a favorable circumstances. On
the way to the hospital ho dropped out
of the wagon and joined the pedes
trians on the walk. When the driver
returned to the castle and told his
story , a detail of men was at once
sent out to capture the tricky prisoner ,
and the alarm was given all over
Richmond. To leave the city was tube
bo picked up by a patrol "to remain
was to bo hir-ted down.
Hancock had money EoweJ in the
lining of his vest , and ho walked
straight to the best .hotel , registered
himself as from Gcoiiria , and put in a
good night's sleep. In the morning
ho procured a change of clothing and
sauntered around with the irroatostun-
concern , carrying the idea tosomo that
ho was in Richmond on a government
contract , and to others that ho was in
the secret service of the Confederacy.
Shortly after dinner ho was arrested
on Main street by a squad of provost
troops who had his description to a
dot. Hut lo ! no sooner had they put
hands on him tlnin the prisoner was
scon to bo cross-eyed and to have his
mouth drawn to ono side. The men
were bewildered , and Hancock was
looting "for letters to prove his iden
tity , " when the hotel clerk happened
to pass and aloncepocnrod his liberty.
CAI'OHT AO.U.Y.
Four dayn after his escape from the
Castio the scout found himself out of
funds , and while in the corridor of the
postolllco ho wns again arrested. This
time ho drew his mouth to the right ,
brought a squint to his loft nye , and
pretended to bo very deaf. Ho was ,
however , taken to ( ho Caatlo , and
Micro a wonderful thing occurred.
Guards who knew Hancock's face
porfeclly well wore so confused by his
squint that no mnn dared give a certain
answer. I'lisoniTH who had been with
him for four niontho wore equal-y at
fault , and it waslinallydcci ud to lock
him up and investigate his icforonceu.
For coven long days the scout kept his
mouth showed nroiind and his eye on
the squint , and then he got tired of it
and resumed his accustomed phi * .
The minute ho did this ho w s recog-
nixed by everybody , and the Confed
erates admired his jiervo and perse
verance fully as much as did hiu fel
low-prisoners. The close ol the war
ga\o him his liberty with the rest , but
ten days longer would have seen him
shot as a opy. M. Iju.Mi.
