C.hd jjfow Fancloil Snow Plow for
Demulisliing Drifts-
Ililca o Trllmno.
The llaughawout Snow-Plow Com-
> any , of this city , is building its first
inpw-plow , which , as peen M4coni { > lcit-
sd , will bo placed upon the Union
Pacific Road. The invention wns pat-
mted in August hist byJ. W. Haugh-
iwout , of Iowa , and n description
) f the plow and its methoa of
vorking will bo of interest. The
vhoel , which throws the snow fioin
100 to 200 feet , and at an tingle of
, wenty-livo degrees from the track , is
! on&tructod so as to cut the snow with
i shearing motion , im-tciul of scooping
t up like a shovel. Tt is propelled by
roworful engines , constructed and ar
ranged on a car made purposely for
this machine , giving the wheel the re-
juiredpowerund velocity to enable it to
tlirow the snow , by centrifugal force ,
( it a great highlit and distance. There
are two wings projecting over the
wheel from each upper comer of thu
car which break the circular curiont ,
forming hvo .separate ones at an angle
of forly-livu degices. All tlio snow
coming in contact with the wheel ,
below the axle , passes out by the
lower , or side , eurient , and that
which conies above the axle pisses out
by tlio top current. When the plow
in workiuu' in deep snow , it will throw-
tile upper current through miow whoru
it in sevoial feet hiulnir than the ma
chine. The wheel can bo reversed ,
thereby taking ad vantage of the wind ,
low sides ofeuts _ , hills , and mountains ,
Tlio apron is mndo of boiler iron of
.suitable thickness , bolted together ,
and so suitable that the forwaid end
rests a slight ditttimco nbovo the rails ,
and gradually inclines upwind as
it approaches the car until it
readies the bladesof the \\huoU , where
it runs horizontally backward parallel
to the ends of the blades , which work
> ver it. This portion of the apron
immediately under the wheel , instead
if l > ing | arallol to the track' , as at the
front end , is formed in the nre of a cir-
3)0 ) of little larger diameter than the
: ircumferencu of the wheel , thereby
itlbrding no room for the snow to be-
: ome clogged or impacted on the
ipron , The , sines ascend at an angle
> f about 40 degress to where the
ounded portion of the apron stops ,
ind then continue vertically upward a
mlliciont distance to assist in forming
: ho desired current. The plow is of
I'llliciunt width to clear the atiow from
ho trark and from both sides thereof
.o allow the cars to pass through , and
a of such form at its front end that ,
ifter openiim the passage , the snow at
the sides has no tendency to fall onto
the track.
