THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; MONDAY NOVEMBER 21 , 1881 THE SOCIAL WEEK , A Running Record of Brilliant Events in Onmhn Society. JTEoTouzftlin Farewell Recep tion. Social Nolcsand Polite Poisoimll- The past week in Omaha society circles has bcun tHloil to ovcillowing with social cnturtnimnents. rt.KAMA.NT HOL'llS. 'Tito long expected farewell recep tion mill complimentary banquet ten dered by tlic "riciisiuit Hours" club to Mr. A. E , TotiZiilin took plnoo last evening at Masonic hall in the presence - once of one of Iho most brilliant social gatherings which lias over assembled in our city. The iiinnngoinuiil of the club certainly surpassed its famous record in the preparations for an event which will always bo historic in its annals. The hull was decorated will rare taste under the supervision ol 1'rusulont Squires , and the client was beautiful , appropriuto and hi ( niisfaclory. From chandcliur and pillar depended festoons of evergreen forming an arch of green above the dancers. A cornice of buntinu' adorned the walls relieved by trailing sinilax and jlower.s. Between the win dow were paintings wreathed with vines and at intervals handsome shields bore the names of u number of Onmlu'a most popular belles. The proscenium arch was wreathed with tlags and the wall above bore a hand some silk banner with the word "FiircweH" in gold lettering. The softened light from numberless Chinese lanterns blcndeu with the coloring of the decorations and lent an appearance of fairy land to the scene. The programmes were genuine works of art olegantlyongtiw ed with Mr. Touzalin'a monogram , and printed on colored satin. The evening ing was a succession of surprises , The first was the absence of Mr. Tou/.xlin , who decidedly objects to being lionized , from the reception. Thu second was the distribution of a bogus programme as elegant in ap- peatanco as the original , with Mr. Ghas.E , Squires' monogramsubstituted for that of tlio guest of the evening , and with a highly amusing list of toasts and accompanying sentiments. It was evidently tlio intention of Mr. Touzalin to turn the farewell reception into a complimentary reception to Mr Squires and at once to bewilder that Denial president and mystify the membois of iho club , the guests in attendance and the speakers on the programme. When seven dances had taken place the tables wore brought in , loaded with an ole- ant supper and the banquet began with the following club programme : TOASTS. "Prepare for mirth : for mirth becomes a feast. ' ' 1. The "Pleasant Hours" Club. 'A fitf for your rill of fao : ; show me your bill of company.1 ] tes ( > onse : Gen. Clw. Y. M.imlerson. 3. " Iiesp.mse : Vtcd Xyc , Uiiij. Mr. Squires , in opening pleasantly , alluded to the mock programme in troduced , as ho said by intruders , whom he assured the club would not bo permitted to interfere with the arrangements as already decided upon. Ho called upon General Man- derson , who said he was willing to recognize Mr. Touxalin's programme , which was as follows ; TOASTS. I'HK "rtEAHAJfT IIOUIIS" I'LUII , . "On with the dance. General Mandersim after calling to mind many pleasant recollections of the history of the club said ho was willing to divide time with Mr. Carter for whosu toast ho suggested "West l > o the tie that binds. " When Mr. Touzalin was called upon to respond to the toast of "Our . .Honored Cineut" ho said that a serious mistake had been made as his pro gramme bore upon it the naino C. E. Squires. That gentleman refusing to respond ho would be compelled to ask Mr. 0. J. Grccno to take his place and make a few appropriate re marks. In complying with this request Mr. fJreono , on behalf of the "regulating comimtteu , " announced that after a careful investigation I hey had decided that the programme bearing Mr. Squires' name was the genuine pro/ramino of the ovonini ; . In a short but neat speech , ho pre sented the bewildered president of the club a handsome case of solid silver spoons and lurks of thirty pieces , bedded in an exquisitp pillow of ( lowers , each end of which em bellished witli the lloral lettering " 0. K , S. " Mr. .Squires , although en tirely taken by surprise and somewhat embarrassed , responded in a few words of appreciation for the gift , tvith mild protest at the manner of its bestowal , After this the supper proceeded tlio ( pasts on the dual programmes being alternately read nnd responded to amid much applause and laughter. Mr. Wakely , on behalf of the "The Club Bello/aml Mrs. Wlburfortho "Club Menu" won general and well merited approval. Captain Kobortft' speech in response to tlio lotst : "Tho Army , " was marked by a rare choice of words appropriateness of set.tiinonl and genuine - uino feeling , while Fred Nye as tlio representative of the ureas fairly - ly surpassed himself in wit and brilliancy. The toasts on Mr , Tour.alin's programme wore an swered by Messrs. Hondrickr , Sliiv- crick , Bullock und Uingwalt. The banquet over the hall was nuickly cleared for dancing , and the delightful music of Hoffmann's full orchestra soon filled the floor with Eovonty-livo merry couples , The pro gramme was not concluded until nfter L' o'clock , when the patty broke up to the strains of n waltx from "Olivette. " Hy general consent the evening was the most dellightful in the variety of the entertainment , of any ever botoro spent by the "Pleasant Hours , " The mirth-provoking surprises of Mr. Tou zalin lent additional attractions to a programme already filled to overflow- up with menus for enjoyment , The toilets of the ladies wuro unusually elegant , among which the following were notice.ible : Mrs. Levi Carter wore a striking and elegant toitut of blue brocaded silk with trimmings of light blue satin - diamond ornaments , Airs.
