BANKER'S DAUGHTER.
Great SUCCOHO of the Collier
Combination [ at Boyd'a
Opera ITouao.
] 3oyd's opCM IIOUBO waa well filled
Saturday evening on the occasion of the
second representation in Omaha of the
"Banker's Daughter" by the Union
Square theatre combination. To
many of our renders the plot of this
deservedly popular drama is wull
known , as the play has boon on the
hoards for nearly five years. The in
terest of the plot turns upon the
forced marriage of the hcroino and
the consequent HulFiiriiig which it en
tails upon herself and these connected
with her life. Lillian Weslbrook , the
daughter of u wealthy banker ia en
gaged in marriage to an artist Harold
lloutlcdgo. She is at the name time
receiving thu attentions of the Count
do Carojac a French nobleman whom
HIO ! refuses. Lillian quarrels with
Houtlcdge and ha * taken stops to make
po co with her lover when she is in
formed by her father tlut it is neces
sary thataho nhouldaccept in marriage
the hand of John Strebulow , a wealthy
friend of thu family in order to save
hia bank from ruin and ho him-
sulf from dishonor and disgrace.
Tlio sale itf made , and Lillian , broken
hearted , consent ! ! on condition tlmt
Mr. Strobolow Bhall bo told all. This
her father promisee , and aftcrivards
refuses to do. Harold leaves America ,
goes to Home , pnd Lillian nmvriuH , re
moves to Paris , and becomes n mother.
Here , by an unfortunate chance ,
Harold and Lillian meet and explana
tions unsuo. The old love returns
with redoubled forco. A striking
scone oiiBUos between the old-
time lovers now aundored for
ever , which is interrupted by the
Count do Carojoc , who purposely
quarrels with Harold Koutlouge ischall
tinged and kills the artist in a duel.
The blow nearly kills Lillian whose
husband now for the lirst time learns
the secret history of hia wife's life.
Believing that ho has won her hand
but not her heart ho returns her to
her father promising to return should
she over truly bo ablp to ruciprocato hia
lovo. Lillian returns to Now York
and lives for throe years in her
old homo grieving for her
dead lover and absent husband. At
the end of that time through the
medium of their child and the two
parents Lilian rocoivea baek with open
aruu her husband , now hur lover , and
the play closes with a reunited family
and a happy homo.
Whilti it is something of a misnomer
to call the company which appeared
Saturdad evening in tha lianker'a
Daughter the Union Square company ,
still the combination was in
many respects the bout which
has appeared for a long time in Oma
ha. Miss Adele Belgrade an Lillian
Wcstbrook was n charming and fresh
impersonation of the Banker's Daugh
ter , which carried with it throughout
the play the sympathies of the audience -
once , The Florence Brown of Mrs.
Charles Walcott could scarcely bo im
proved upon , It was at once a work
of consummate ) art and agonuino reve
lation of nature. Mr. Whiting's us
John Strobclow , scarcely did himself
justice in the opening scone , but fur
ther in the progress of thu play
entered moro thoroughly into the spirit
of his part and gave an oarnoat and
manly characterization of the loving
but wronged husband. The Count do
Carojao of Mr. Doball is worthy of
moro than passing mention. It was a
finished tluni h intensely passionate
study of a difficult character which few
actors could improve upon. Charles
Wolcott as G. Washington Tippa presented -
sontod an admirable piece of character
portraiture which completely won the
audience.
Not to particularize , the remaining
members of the company gave an ex
cellent support , und rounded oil' ono
of the best castti which has ever ap
pcared in our city.
The stiigo sott'ng was all that could
bo desired , nnd exhibited in a most
favorable light the resources of our
bountiful opera houso. Mention
should bo made of the debut of the
theatre orchestra , which churmod the
audience with a number of excellently
performed muaicalnuinbora. Thoior-
chostra la in ovury way worthy of Ihe
