OKKIOE ov THE OMAHA BKE , )
Saturday Evening , October 29. J
JIAUKKT ItKVIKW.
Business has been moderately brisk in
the local money market.
The Krain trade has been remarkably
slow during the greater part of the week.
The dullness was due to tbo continued bad
x
joveathei to n great extent. Jonsider.ble
Mprcity exists in about all descriptions ,
There was a good demand for local con-
Humption , the urgency in the request ,
however , was mainly confined to lots for
immediate use , the price for corn and oats
was rnn up to G0@75c per bushel on the
streets , while the. elevators were only pay
ing about 35@37c for oats and 45@'iOc for
corn. Prices for all sot ts fluctuated con
siderably during the week. Wheat closed
about 2c lo'.vcr thtv.i was quoted at the beginning -
ginning of the week. Barley closed Jc
lower. Ilye unchanged , Corn about the
same at the close as wns quoted at the
ooening of the week. Oats jc higher at
the c'.oso. '
The provision market wai charaterized
by uncommonly weak nnd declining prices.
Most especially was this the feature for all
kinds of hog products. Many Cannes have
been assigned for this feature of the trade ,
and among others that the weakness is
mainly duo to concentrated action among
the principal packers , in order that the
winter packing may start in with cheaper
stocks of hogs , as owing to the apprecia
tion in prices of corn farmers will soil early ,
Although there is no actual market at
(
Omaha just at present , except for butch
ers' stock , the yards will open soon and
largo shipments are expected to arrive
early in November and contiuun for the
t 9i'tt. The Council Bluffs stock yard )
are doing a fair business , and for want of a
reliable Omaha market to give we quote
Council Bluffs prices. Staples , both raw
and manufactured , that have not been
subject to speculative manipulation , held
up well in prices and buyers took hold of
them with confidence in the future values.
This condition was observable in iron ,
paper stock , wool , metals of all kinds ,
cotton nnd woolen fabrics , staple varieties
of notions , fancy and staple groceries ,
hardware , paints , oils , etc.
In the local markets wholesale dealers
reported a very active state of things.
Dry goods am' ' notions , groceries , boats
and alines , hats and caps , hardware , lum
ber , pnlnta , oils , drugs and chemicals , and
clothing were scut out in large amounts ,
and indications ore the present month will
make n larger chewing of traffic than Sep
tember. Merchants nay the collections
were fair considering the Iltriit marketing
of produce , and with favorable weather an
improvement is looked for during the
coining month.
