The events of the week in financial
circles were important , chiefly mi

At frequent intervals during the week
money was very dull , The highest point
reached was } , i > er cent mid interest , but

low as 2 per cent. Foreign ctchnnifi was
we.ik throughout nnd rates \\cru minced

at close to-day. Oo\eminent bonds were
weak nnd declined sharply. The railway
nnd Jniscellanenus speculations were charac
terized by.a . niaiked depression , the
stringency in money inducing1 free Hales
under which prices dropped 1@1S per
cent. The lowest point was generally
touched on Thursday when great weakness
prevailed. Still later in the week a sharp
rally ensued on reports that Secictary
'Windbin would take seine action looking
to the relief of the inonsy market. ThK

Tlio stock market to-day wa ? irregular
but in the main firm , nnd although there
were few periods of weakness prices at the
close were generally ifJS per cent higher
than nt the close yesterday , the latter in
Manhattan. Heading was an exception ,
however , nnd cl Bed 1 per cent lower. The
upward turn in the prices to-day was
caused by the report that Mr. Windom
had resigned nnd that he would bo suc
ceeded by Secretary Boutwcll as soon as
the senate organized. This report was de
nied however

declined about 9c. Oats closed 2gc higher

several important changes are noted. Gin-

ing to the unexpected largo harvest. In
conversation with the ciunmcrcial editor of
TIIK BKK to-day , Mr. P , T. Mayne , of the
Council Bluffs steam broom factory , Raid :
"Tho quality of broom corn Is better this
year than it has bpcn since 1871. The
crop Is very heavy. There will bo no
trouble about getting hurl as onc-thitd of
the corn runs to hurl this year , The acre
age is much larger tli.va was \pcctcd.
Some of the old broom corn growing sec
tions have dropped off but
a great deal has been grown
in locations where there has been very little -
tlo raised heretofore Mr. Mayno has
several letters from loading broom-corn
men of Nebraska and Iowa , among thtm
Charles Hogland of Wcnton , Samulers
county , Neb. , who says there arc COO acres
of broom corn in his Immediate neighbor
hood. David Coleman , of David City , has
considerable. Mr. James T. Clark , of
Alma , has 50 acres and says there are
sevcrAl hundred acres in that neighbor
hood. A letter from Momma county ,
Iowa , reports about 1,100 , acics in that
county.

Horses and Mules.
The market is brisk and all grades are
selling well at a slight advance in pi ices.
The demand for good horses exceeds the
supply considerably. Prices range as fol
lows :
