Omaha "Wholesale Market-
WEEKLY REVIEW.
OFFICE OF TUB OMAHA UKE , )
Saturday Kvcning , September 10. 1
Country banks have begun to order cur
rency , drawing on their balances moder
ately. The result hag been a depletion of
supply , with a prospective scarcity here
after during- the crop shipping season.
The fact that currency is now called for is
evi 'ence that grain is beginning to move ,
either in shipments or by transfers of
ownership. Thus far the discount de
mand for money is quiet , beyond the rou
tine wants of customer ? , but a most active
money market , from this time forward , is
expected. Owing to the demand for cur
rency , eastern exchange is in liberal sup
ply , and weak. Counter business is well
sustained at the banks , owing to the ac
tive trade enjoj ed by the city merchants
which in all departments shows no falling
off. The report has been so often made ,
of the prosperity of the Omaha market ,
that its repetition now is not required. It
is sufficient to say that , in all lines of
merchandise , business in Omaha has
shown a greater volume in sales than ever
before in the season.
Wheat lias shown an advance daring the
week of Ic. Corn firm , closing 2c higher ,
Oats Ann and about Ic better than a week
ago. Barley has developed strength dur
ing the week , closing higher. Kyo nom
inal , Jc lower. Ground feed advanced
materially , following corn. Curnmeal
higher , Uran quiet but higher , in sym
pathy with other markets. Nothing done
in baled hay for want i f receipts.
The street markets have shown many
changes during the wr ck.
Butter has ruled firm for choice and ad
vanced 4@0c. §
Egg.1 very scarce and advanced ic dur
ing the week.
Onions were lower nt the close ,
Sweet Potatoes in good supplv.
Poultry showed Increased receipts.
Provisions were in good jobbing demand
all the week.
Apples were in pretty fair supply ; but
the bulk were not in very good order.
Melons abundant , from thu wngons.
Domestic grape.s and peaches in light
offering.
California fruits in fair .supply , and Hell
ing nt Icsj than the previous week's prices.
Or.mgos show ( rood demand. Lemons
rather ncarca and advanced 1 00@1 50 per
box.
Commission hnuiea are doing a fair bun-
The commercial editor of Tin : BEE ,
wishing to learn all ho could about the
fruit crop this year , interviewed one of the
leading commission houses of the city ,
1'earon k Cole , and obtained the follow
ing information ;
"The crop of fruit all over the country ,
excepting California and Utah , run fifty
per cent lower than for several years back.
The quality , on account of the short crops ,
ought to average much better than on
yearj when the crop * were heavy , but
owing to severe drought , almost every
where , what frilt ) does como in is hardly
up to the average of ordinary season * , Wo
have a good crop of homegrown Concord
grapes , and the trade hits been brisk ,
Apple * from present indications will bo
fully fifty per cent higher than last year.
Vegetables in thU section , the fore part of
the season promised an abundant crop ,
but between drought and insccU , every.
thin ? U now used ut > and nil kind * of v ? # .
ctabloj uro ncarce , cabbage especially ,
It appear * that the average farmer wul
dealer In this date who have any potatoes
place ton much confidence In "short crop'1
nndv1iilo sucu i.s the case in so mo parts of
this stile , Iowa and northern Missouri ,
yet nthcr sections have plenty to spare ,
anil while wo do not look for very low
prices , yet wo think that the extravagant
prices expected by some will not bo real
ized. "
"How do the prices of fruits compari
with last year1
"It seems the general public understand
the scarcity and lia\oinaile up tlielr minds
that fruit is too dear to purchase , and the
majority iwvor Inquire the price , atul it is
dtflicult to sell even at the prices ruling
other seasons , except a little to stands.
California and Utah fruits are not very
high considering the scarcity of home
grown nnd eastern fruits , and sell no
higher than last year. If as high.
The dry fioodi trade has been very brisk
the past week. In conversation with the
commercial eilltorof TlIK llKK , a repi esenta-
tivo of the wholesale house of Tootle ,
Maul k Co. , of this city , said that trailo
has been much better than Is usual at this
time of the year. Prices are stilf , but no
material advances have taken place. In
fact we note this week numerous reduc
tions , especially in brown cottons. Some
brand * of bleached cottons are lower.
Pi iuts are sliif , but slight advances are
noted for several makes. Several changes
arc noted in tickings , oil clutli , denims ,
Htripcd and coltonadcs.
Hides ruled steady. Green cured ad.
vanced Jo.
Wool dull and quiet.
Tallow advanced jc.
Lumber trailo continues very heavy ,
tlio yards having about all they can do to
Biipp'y the demand ; quotations nro un
changed.
Drugs. Trade good ; very few changes
have been noted during the week. Opluia
is 23a lower than last week.
Tobacco excited anil numerous advances
have been reported during the week.
Paint ? , oils aiulvarnishes show no de
crease in trade , prices ruling generally
firm. Lard oil n''ain advanced 7c during
the week for strained , and 3c for other
grades.
Groceries. Trade reported active. The
only changes during the week nro in
pickle and soap limitations.
Hardware continue ! firm ami trade
lively.
