WHITEST MAHJHJHB MINES ,
In the onrly days ol the Cnrbonnto
Camp , 1878-70 , no clmractor wns
butter known tlmu Hin Moore , "Tlio
Whitest Mnn in the Flint's. " Colonel -
nol Aluoro wivs not a beauty. Ho was
live foot niito inches in fieiyht , niul
weighed only one huntlrctl anil thirty-
flvo iioutuls , but ho wna nn nthlulo ,
with nitiscluA us hard na iron , niul n
inovuiucnt ns cjutck nn n cat. Ho
hailed from Evnnsvillc , lud. Mis
forehead was hiyh and narrow , his
hnir black , oycs a stool gray , a largemouth
mouth iind a iitij , ' uoso. Ho was al
ways smooth Blmvon , drank seine , but
iiovor to cxcesa , and was a man born
to lend , in whatovcr station of lifo ho
might be found.
Colonel Moore was a gambler by
profession , and immodiutoly after
locating in the Carbonate Camp , com
menced dealing faro at the Toxaa
house , on Harrison avenue ,
Lcadvillo. The colonel was
entirely unknown when ho com
menced operations in Lcadvillo , nnd
the next day after ho commenced deal
ing , John Kichnrds , the camp bully ,
clinrgud him with running a brace
game. Moore struck him over the
head with the heavy silver box , pro
cured a now box and continued coolly
dealing , whileRichards' frionda were
trying to bring him back to conscious
ness. When this was accomplished ,
the crowd scattered in expectation of
Bucing a little pistol practice between
Moore and .Richards , but the latter
\ \ alked meekly away.
On the fourth day of Jim's opera
tions in Loadvillo , a gambler named
Mooney , who had lost heavily by his
reckless betting , drew his bowie knife
and applied an opprobrious epithet to
Mooro. The latter pulled a revolver ,
shot Mooncy through the heart , and
the coroner's jury acquitted him on
tlio ground of self-defense , and Jim
was at his post , dealing as usual , in
the course of a few hours. This little
episode raised Jim in the estimation
of gamblers and I'osuoradocs ' of the
camp , and those who had looked dowi
upon him before , were glad to rocog'
iiix.o him now.
Jim was a reckless phenomenon. .
Not longer after ho became acclimntci
and acquainted in the camp , an humbl
follower of John Wesley canio t (
Leadvillo to establish a church. Whor
Jim heard of the movement , he ob
served to a small knot of gamblers
gathered around him , "Uy fl d
boys , a town isn't worth n damn with
out a church in it , and I'm ' going tt
help the parson , " So he called upoi
the minister , got a promise from bin
not to como down to hard upon th <
sporting men , and promised his aid
Ho got up a subscription paper ,
headed it with a round sum , passed il
around among his friends and raised
enough to erect a church building
Then ho went to church on the firs
oponini' Sunday , led the singing , ami
passed the hat around twice.
But the next Sunday ho was abson
from church , nnd the minister , mix
iour to know if ho wns sick , wont to
the Texas house to inquire. Ho
found Jim seated in the midst of a
crowd of gamblers and miners , deal
ing faro. As soon as Jim espied tin
parson ho paused in his dealing and
sternly said :
"No inonkoy work here , parson. "
"Certainly not , " said the preacher ,
"I shall not bother. I did not know
but that you were ill , ns you were
absent from church , and I called to
inquire. "
'No , " said Jim , "I wanted to como.
but a sucker came in with § 2,000 to
spend , and I had to tay and accom
modate him , " and the minister won
away.
But the incident by which Jin
gained the sobriquet of "tho whitest
man in the mines , " occurred soon
after this. The town was springi
up with mushroom rapidity , titles
were loose , and claim-jumping was nn
overy-day , or rather every night oc
currence. There we o nbout Jwolve
thousand people in the camp at the
time of which I write , nnd nearly half
of them were cnmblors , highwaymen
and desperadoes. Men had como to
the camp to got rich , and all other
duties and purposes but this were lost
aight of
On the corner of Harrison avenue
and State street was n very valuable
lot , -which had boon taken as a claim
before it was of much valueby n poor ,
uld , withered washerwoman named
Ray , who had como .up from Denver.
Hero she had pitched her tent nnd
was engaged in washing for miners
ind camp men. It had been decided
by four professional lot jumpers that
Mother Rny'had no right to this vnlu-
iblo corner , and must give it up. So ,
mo cold night their plan to dispos-
icss the poor woman was put into
> poration.
Jim Moore had been dealing faro
'or ninny hours , without ; rest , until
lis brain reeled , and the smell of
iquor and tobacco smoke made him
ick. So ho asked a brother gambler
o take his place behind the magic
jox for awhile , while ho took a stroll
n search of pure air and n euro for
jishcndncho. It was a cold ) ) itt star-
it evening , and Jim enjoyed it To the
idlest extent , as lie walked up and
lown the streets , not caring whither
10 went , but only bunt upon gritting
id of the weakness and ( lix/inesi
irought on by his steady woik and
ontinoment.
Suddenly a woman's shriek sounded
m the night air , and Jim Moore ;
lauscd to listen. Tlio scream was re-
it-atu'l , and Jim hurrying in the di-
cction fiom which the sound pro-
eeded , envr Mm. llay'a tent in naiiitM ,
n 'the light of the fire Jim beheld
ho forms of four men , and their
novcmontH excited his suspicion that
11 was not right. Ho hurried for-
rard. One of the four villaimi had
hoked the old woman nearly to
leath , nnd the four now stood "with
ockod revolvers , to prevent any nt-
umpt of n couple of parties near by
t extinguishing the llnmcs. ' They
, ul a now tent with them , which they
icnnt to have erected on the mta of
ho old ono when they had turned the
Id woman out into the cold.
Jim Moore took in the whole tiiliui-
ion at once , and sprang forward to
lie rescue. The jumpers llrcil two
hots at him , but they missed him ,
nd when he answered them , ono
Kin wont down with n hole in his
cad and another with a broken leg.
'lie ' firinj. brought a crowd of men ,
nd in the excitement the remaining
ivo men escaped.
When Mra , Ray recovered enough
3 spcnk , uho wont down on her knees
nd said to Jim , amidst teara and
sobs , ' ! don't know your name , but
I do know nnd may God bless you ,
that you arc the whitest man in the
mines. "
Willing hands in the crowd sson
erected the now tent for the old
woman , the wounded lot-jumper was
cared for till ho got well and then
ordered out of town , and Jim Moore
was ever after known as "tho whitest
man in the mines. " Mra. Uny sold
ono of her lots for § 14,000 , a few
weeks after the scene above narrated ,
and with the proceeds erected _ build-
it s on the other lots , which bring her
a good income She resides in the C.ir-
bonato Camp to-day and Iho tears
como into her eyes whenever anything
is said of thewhitest * man in the
mines. " '
iSHvy more stories jn regard to this
Atrnngo character might hu related ,
but wo pass them by the final nnd the

lifo.
lifo.Ono
Ono Saturday night there was a
largo crowd in Jim's place , and bet
ting had been high nnd feverish. Jim
hail boon dealing rapidly nnd
silently for hours. Suddenly lie slopped -
ped in the middle of the deal , re
moved the cards from the box and
said ; ' 'Gentlemen , pass in your
chocks for your cash. The deal has
stopped and all further bets nro oil'
Jim Moore has dealt the last card he
will over deal in this life. "
For nn instant there was a death
like stillness , and then a dozen voices
shouted' , "What's the matter , Jim ? "
"Nothing , " ho replied ; "only Iain
n gambler lie longer. I-have como to
the conclusion that preaching nnd not
dealing is my trade Yon may call
mo 'Jim' nnd the 'whitest man in the
mines' the rest of to-night , but nftcr
this you will please say "Mr. Mooro. ' "
All the pot suasions of his friends
could not change Jim's determination.
"No , boys , " ho said , "I have done a
powerful lot of harm guiding the
Royal Bengal Tiger , and now I intend
to do n powerful lot of good. Bar
keeper , drinks for the house , at my
expense. "
Jim Moore immediately quit his ol
haunts , except when ho appeared
them in the role of n missionary. II
preached on numerous occasions , am
his sermons were earnest and convinc
ing , although interspersed with slang
uid occasionally n bar-room phrase
There was nothing of the hypocrit
about him. Ho wns ns terribly i
earnest ns ho was when ho defende
Mrs" . Ilay's rights , and his old nssoci
ates respected liiin , though they won
dered at him nnd could not under
stand it.
But the end soon came. In April
1880 , Moore sot out on snow shoe ;
for the Gunnison country , to do mis
sionary work , or ns ho characteristic
ally put it , to wrestle with the Gun
nison heathen. Nothing was heard
from him , and his old and now asso
ciatcs wondered what had become o
him , until late in July , when tin
mystery was explained. In tha
month prospectors penetrated the nev
country on Taylor/ river , nnd in oui
of the deep fissures they found n deat
body. It was frozen still' and not ni
all decomposed. From tlio way ii :
which it was wedged in , it was sup.
posed that the unfortunate man had
fallen into the fissure and mot hi ;
death. None of the men who drew
the body out recognized the features ,
But loitering behind , testing the
rocks , was a young man from the
Carbonate Camp. When ho came up
ho took ono look at the features of
the dead , and immediately removed
his hat and said with crciit emotion :
"My God , boys , this is the body of
Jim Moore , the whitest man in the
mines1 ! '
A TROMBONE TREAT.
A Political Jninlioroo in San

San Franclico Chronicle.
The spirited rendering in front of
Irish-American Hall last night by
band of five graduated trombones of
the patriotic melody , "We'll fight for
Jeilerson Davis on a Confederate
man-of-war , " summoned the Democ
racy of the Twelfth Senatorial district
to ratify the nominations made by
their amalgamated Municipal Conven
tion , The hall having been filled ,
the quintet of trombones wont
up stairs and took a front
seat. T. B. Morteo opened
the meeting. Ho announced that
the whole ticket was brimful of hon
esty and integrity , and that M. C.
Haley , candidate for rc-jordor , was
loaded fairly to the muzzle with every
virtue requisite in a recorder. Major
Harry Hammond made a speech that
only his hurry t < j get over to another
meeting ut Biitchurtown prevented
from being painfully eloquent. Sher
iff Desmond was also bound for Butch-
urtown , but took time to remark that '
ho "wouldn't take nn insult to
bo elected president , and ho
wouldn't swap oil'any man
on the ticket with anybody. "
Music by the tivo trombones , ' 'While
