About 10 o'clock ycstcrdny morning Edward Coiner wns instantly killed under rather peculiar circumstances. Ho with four of five other men were working for William Hoyd , the con tractor , in driving piles upon which will bo erected n building for the Con Rolidatcd Tank Line company on lower Douglas street , just east of the U. P. railroad track A two-liorso power was used to rniso the heavy weight , which being allowed to 1 suddenly , drop , upon thn piles , gradually nttiks them into the onrth. Comer owned n teamnnd wna working thuro for this purpose. The horses were moving in n circle , gradually raising the weight through the system of ropes nnd tackle , while Comer snt under the horizontal beam coiling the rope ns it was being paid in. Suddenly the pin in the clcavls which attached the doubletrees ft > the beam of the ma chine , slipped out and lot the double trees down on the horses' heels. 'I his of course unloosened the gearing. Comer , instead of keeping down out of the way of the beam , jumped up to protect his horses , forgetting in his'oxcitomont that ho himself stood in the way of the beam. It revolved with frightful speed striking him on the back of the head just fit the base of thobrain , nnd throwinghim violently to the ground Tlio force of the blow must have been terrific lor the hammer mor ot the pile driver weighed ever 1,800 pounds. When the pin cnmo out of the cleavis there wns nothing to contoract the weight , nnd the whole force of it came upon Comers' skull. The blow fractured the base of the skull , und Coiner never moved afterwards. His companions were Rtanding about ono hundred foot away from him , but before they could got to him ho wns dead. Mr. Boyd immediately sent for a doc tor , and nlso notified Coroner Jacobs. The coroner repaired to the place together with Ir. Denise nnd Dr. llprt/nmn. IIo iminedintcly made up a jury nnd held the inquest in Iloag land's lumber oflico , The jury , nfter hearing the ovi deuce , returned n verdict to the effect that deceased came to his death from purely accidental causes. A feud lias existed between Edward Augustus and Morris Schutts for some : imu past. They both live in Omaha irccinet and their houses arc directly opposite each other. Upon Sunday , August 7th , us is alleged by Augustus , 10 , with a party of his friends , wore sitting in his front door yard convers- ng nnd enjoying themselves , when Schutts drove up in front of his louse on the opposite side of the way nnd seeing his enemy enjoying i.msclf , commenced abusing him ant called some pretty hard names. Ho said ho would shoot the party without regard to ago or sex. Ho fired two shots , neither of which took effect. It in said that Schuttz did not intern to hit any one , but fired to scare Au gustus nnd his friends. However , he bantered Augustus to go out into the street nnd light , which the latter de clined , with thanks. Tins dispute die ! not culminate in any serious difii culty. Last Sunday it is allegec by Augustus that Schutts hired two men to go the former's house ant whip him nnd his wife. They went each armed to the tooth with pistol nnd knives , and bulldozed the famil ; of Augustus completely. Those facts arc .OH stated by Augustus and hi friends. Schutts was arrested this morning and tried under the chnrgn o a3sault.boforo Justice Brandos , who reserved his decision until to-morrow The two men who whipped Augusta and his wife were nlso arrested am will be tried. INDIAN LEGENDS- The Story of tlioSuii , tlio Moon , the Stars and the Comet- Vlrxlnlix City Tcr. Kntcrpriie. About the time the now comet wn at its brightest wo took the occasioi of a call from Captain Sam , of the Pinto tribe , to ask him about the no tions held by his people in regard to such celestial visitants. Sum said ho would presently bring to us nn olc man of his tribe who had the whole dome of heaven by heart. In some trepidation after so mud ceremony nnd preparation wo final ! } ventured to nsk the venerable siivan if lib know anything about the come recently neon tlamini ; in the northeri sky. Ho did ho know nil about it "It was , " ho said , "a wounded star. ' Said ho ; "It is badly hurt , but itwil get away. " Without fiirthcrccromonj or preamble ho proceeded to give in the whole economy of the celeetia realms in a nutshell , BO to suy. It \ vans ns follows ; "The sun rules the heavens. Ho is the big chief ; the moon is his wife and the stars are his children. The sun ho eat him children whenever h can them catch. They nro nil the time afraid when ho is passing throng ] in the nboye. When ho , their father the sun , gets up in the morning , yet see nil the stare , his children , Ily on of sis-ht-go away into the blue am they do not make to bo BOOH again til ho , their father , is about for going to bed. Down deep under ground deep deep - is a grcnt hole. Hero ho g into this hole , the sun , and ho craw and he creep till h * come to his bed sec then sleeps there all night. Tint is so little , and he , the sun , is so big that ho cannot turn around in it , si ho must , when ho has had all his sleep , pass on then through , and wo see him next morningcomo out in the cost. When ho so comes out ho begins gins to hunt up through the sky t catch and eat tiny that ho can of the stars , his children Ho , the sun , is not all scon , The shape o him is like a snake or u liz ard. It ia not his head that wo can see , but his belly , stuffed wjth the stars he has times and times devoured His wife , the moon , she goes into the enmo hole as her husband to sleep her imps. She have always the great fea of him , the sun , that have her for his wife , and when ho conies into the hole to sleep she long not stay there If ho bo cross. Sho. the moon , have grea love for her children , the stars , and i happy to bo traveling up where tiny ure , And they , her children , feel | f nd smile ns she passes along. But she , lieir mother , cannot help but that ono nust go every month. It is ordered > y Pnh ah , the Great Spirit , that ivcs above the place of nil. Every nonth he do swallow ono of his chil- Iron. Then the moon feel sorrow. She must to mourn. Her face she do > aint it black , for a child is gene Jut the dark you will see wear away rom her face -little , little , little every day , nnd after n time we see again nil the fnco bright of the moth- > r moon. But soon ho , the sun , her uisbnml , swallow another child , nnd she put again on her face the pitch nnd the black. " "But how about the comet ? " "Well , " said the philosopher , 'sometimes you sec the aun snap nt ono of the store"his children , nnd not ; et good , fast hold only tear ono lolo nnd hurt it. It got wild of pain nnd go Ily away ncrosa the sky with treat spout of blood from it. It then , 'cry 'frnid , and ns it fly tfecp always t head turn to watch the sun , its 'nther , nnd never turn away from him ts fico till far out of his reach. " Having thus disposed of the whole justness of the realms nbovc , the sage was inclined to come down to mun dane matters , nnd suggested tlmt nuch talk made man hungry. Ho wns not too proud to accept four bits. Sam , however , who had been listen- ng very attentively to the nstronom- cnl doctrines of the wise man of his nbo and who evidently wished to icar more , went on to say that when ho white men first came to the conn- ry nnd began to dig great shafts , naiiy of his people feared that they ntendcd to dig down to the subter ranean passageway of the sun and noon , catch them both , carry them away and leave the whole world in larkncss. To this the old philosopher answered hat such a thing was impossible , ow- ng to the great heat above and about he hole. Ho said nil the white men could do wna to got out some of the rocks nbovc the underground road of ho orbs , nnd which had absorbed , heir brightness ns they lay asleep in ; heir beds below , those rooks pro ducing , in the case of tlio moon , the white metal ( silver ) , and in the case of the sun the yellow metal ( gold ) . Capt. Sam now said that they were ready to take their leave , and would bp glad to carry with them a small niece of the white metal mentioned by the wise man of the tribe. Some lown Veterans. Tracr Clipper. The mooting of the Veterans at Traer will bo n notable event. Wo will see more men together whoso names will shine in their country's story when that story is told than it will bo our privilege to sco again , as time is gradually thinning their Tanks , to which there are no recruits. When the history of the war is fairly written it will appear that Shiloh was a bloodier battle 'than Waterloo , and Mansfield on the Red llivcr mor hotly contested than the Bridge oi Lodi. Nor will the fact that regiments and brigades fought independently lessen the glory of the participants. Col. Council , of the 24 Iowa , who lost an arm on the Red river , and is so popular witli his boys. Col. Shaw , who led the old 14th in so many furi ous engagements , the Anthony Swuyno of the late war. Col. Scott , who set so gallant an example to hi : regiment , the 32d at Mansfield. We will likely sco Col. Wilson , of the 24th the Marshal Ney of Iowa soldiers. Wo name these as representatives ol the bravo men they commanded who are now pursuing the quiet vocations of lifo on the' farm and in the count ing room who como not that wo may see them , but that they may see each other. Take out the women nnd children that day and let them see the men that left the plow and pen to maintain the integrity of the re public , who triumphed in the grcatcsl war of modern times against nn enemy my that would have won hnd they contended with other than the soldiers of the prairio. If your mind ha1 painted n hero , and you have not aeer the reality , you will learn by looking at these neighbors of yours that the performance of duty ns it is repre sented nnd the discharge of responsi bility ns it comes makes the hero in war or peace , and you must decide whether Iowa soldiers are greatest victorious in war , or modest every daj workers at homo in peace. It wil bo wholesome for the boys to learn that Tama county's grandest men are plain mon , and teach them to look closer than to outside trappings for real worth. The lesson will not bo loud but long lemombereu. Wo hope they will not-come with row uniforms and lire anus. Wo want to sco them. We will not likely get them seer again. Their own convenience re quires them to meet at different places. But we may make them so welcome they may como back all the sooner. GRAND EXCURSION.
