The compe tition is so great that they are glad to got a sure hold upon any good stand ) whcro they may , in a certain sense , retail their own goods. A bar-keeper who has saved a few hundred dollars suddenly opens n saloon whoso appointments alone cos 85 , 000. " Tlio secret often is that his brewer has fitted up the ualoon with its c&stly bar , its lepaiit furniture , itfl commodious ice-box , and its $300 billiard lablo , and stands good for the rent. The apparently prosperous saloon keeper's invented capital is barely enough , to servo as a guarantee that ho won't run away between two days with what ho can carry. The browcr holds chattel mort gages for their full value on what ever ho has put in. The brewer's bcor must bo sold in the saloon. Sometimes the saloon keeper has the help'of several of the men whoso goods ho sells on similar conditions. Ho has an up-hill road to travel , because - cause ho must pay the prices they chooBO to impose upon htm. In. no other class of stores is BO much money habitually invested in fittings as in first-class drinking saloons. Never theless , it can not bo said as yet that a very disproportionate amount of the corner property in Now York is in possession of brpwersjand distillers. Great complaint ia made by the brewers of Now York and its vicinity on account of'tho ' demands made upon thorn by their customers. If a saloon keeper has an opening in a now place , his brewer or his representative must bo present and open a liberal number 1 of bottles of champagne. If ho does not. the saloon keeper is vexed. "My orowor is a gentleman , " said n saloon keeper yesterday. When I opened here last May there was not n sign of anybody from his cilice , and I thought it was very qucor.
