STOCKS.
The stock market this morning was ac
tive and strong , under largo purchases
there was a sharp advance throughout the
tntiro list ; there was an advance of 1S3J (
per cent. In prominent shires and 3JWt"J (
per cent , in KOIIIO of tlin fancy stocks. The
favorable rep its received about the con
dition of the president a sUti > d the ri'C In
the general market , and induced some out
side i uying at time . The coal roads
Southwestern shares and trunk lines were
conspicuous in the dealing' ' . Prices fur
ther advanced during the afternoon , and
shortly after 2 o'clock the highest prices of
the day wet c current. Toward the cose ,
however , ft weak feeling set in and here
was some reaction on the reports of further
cutting of rates by trunk lines. Part of
the decline was rcc ivcrcil in the final dealings -
ings and the market closed strong at or
near the highest prices of the day. The
lolumo of business was very large.

banks only shouldered that clashed A No.
1 at 0 per cent on call , and 7 pur cent on
time. Eastern exchange between city
banks sold at SI discount tier Sl.OOO.
Clearings of the associated banks were
§ 3,700,000. A fair amount of money was
foi warded to the grain and live stock dis
tricts.
