Gould secured the Kansas Pacific , moved down upon the St. Louis , Kansas City & Northern , am followed by scouring the Wnbash which carried him as far cast as Toledo Later on ho received a footholt in the Central railroad of Now Jersey , and by judicious working arrange ments ho is in possession of n chain u ; rail communication with a mileage of jreator than that controlled by any other individual on the face of the Jobo. Ho next sot his face toward St. Louie , where ho secured posses sion of the Missouri Pacific , which ho purchased for $5,000,000. To realize handsomely on this venture ho issued § 30,000,000 worth of stock , 25,000,000 of wbich was water ; pui on the market , run it up to paraii ( ] pocketed u profit of between § 0,000- 000 and § 10,000,000. The St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern road stood in the way of his southwestern calcu lations , nnd , conferring with Hon. Thomas Allen , its president , ho drew Ins check for § 3,000,000 , secured con trol , and § 2,000,000 rnoro profit was placed to Gould's credit , lioroliovct the late Thomas Scott of the Texas iot Pacific road , drawing his check on the ; Fourth National bank of this city for 84,000,000 ; and since that time , by pushing the price of the stool : up , ho bor has grown § 5,000,000 richer. For a long time Mr. Gould wagei unsuccessful war to secure contro' the Western Union Telegraph Com of pany , but William H. Vandorbilt's holdings kept him out. Gould secur 500 control of the Atlantic & Pacific Company , ! and for a lima waged f war of rates , which ended in n pool ing arrangement that increased his wealth , but still ho was on the out has side , Determined to succeed , ho or canizcd , the American Union Telegraph graph Company , built thousands o : miles of wires , broke his railroac wire contract with the Western Unioi and Atlantic & Pacific , and grow into the proportions of a very dangerous rival. About tint time ho formed ai alliance with Yunderbilt , and at tin it idol ice of the hitter the agroemon was made by which Gould was to AM sccuro Vundprbilt's stock , niu consolidation of all the tlo telegraph companies under om system was to bo perfected. To-day Mr. Gouh owns 250,000 out of the 700,000 in shares of Western Union in his owi that name , and with his friends control system. This stock at to-day' how figures represents § 22,500,000. There will bo n war of rates , followed by a conference , and the end will bo n pooling of earnings , Mr. Gould being fully recognized in the division and control , when the dear public can shift for itself , and again submit to such rates as the now com- bhmtion may see fit to rmforco.
