Events of the week In money circles
\verc quite important. Money was easy
throughout the week ( it 2J@3 per cent us
the ruling rates for call loans. Foreign ex
change was dull and weak throughout the
week , nnd rates ere reduced. Govern
ment bonds were quiet mul prices show n
decline for the week of. } per cent in the
4Js and4s , rind i for the extended bonds ,
Knilwny nnd miscellaneous speculation
WM characterized by marked depression in
early , and weak wncn there were large
transactions nnd considerable excitement.
St. IVuil led the down movement nnd de
clined sharply. The cutting of freight and
luvsnge rntei by the trunk lines nnd the
reports of tlic grcnt damage to erona by
recent storms had nn unfavorable effect on
the market nnd caused n decline of 10 ?
per cent ; weakness was nlso very marked
in Alton and Terre Haute , Chicago ,
lington and Quincy , the coal shares nnd
some of the newntock. Townnl the close
there was n firmer feeling nnd n recovery
of 4@G1 per cent , the rise being chiefly duo
to the cornering of short contracts to-day ,
however , the unfavorable advices from
Washington , about the president , caused
n shnru decline , and some of the list closed
nt the lowest prices of tlio week.

weak throughout , with a decline in tlic
general list of 42J , per cent. , while Mem
phis fc Charleston dropped 5 per cent , , re
covered 4 percent. , and reacted 3 per cent.
Transactions , however , were not so large
towards 1 o'clock , and there was a recov
ery of 1@1 per cent. , but when the news
that tlio president had experienced n
chaige for the worse became generally
known , there was a rush to sell the entire
list , and prices declined sharply. There
was considerable excitement at the time ,
nlthough there win nothing like a ] > anic ,
there was a widespread general desire to
realize. At one time the leading blocks
showed a decline for the day of i@i > i per
cent. , led by the Gould shares , Western
Union , Texas Pacific , Kansas & Texas ,
Missouri Pacific and the Wabash.

of gales. The Fourth of July holiday hat'
a temporary effect In reducing the trad
volume , but by the Cth of the month tales
were active and extended in all lines. Thi
record now is the eamo as that for week
past. The money market is easy , 10 per
cent , to desirable names on mode ate time ,
yet in individual small values there hat
been a fair supply of paper. The money
seems to have been quickly absorbe I , and
has done considerable traveling in tin
country before reaching , in deposits , th
bank vaults again. From all reports bank
money sold to customers is doing a good
tleal of quiet work , as it stays out a long
time , In the absence of largo borrowings ,
Home of the banks have been seeking good
paper , hut without finding as/ much
they could accommodate , Still there hai
been a fair degree of activity in moderati
loans , furnishing good evidence of the gen

Potatoes are In free supply nnd lower.

In groceries there nro numerous chan
ges , among which wo note a decline in
coffee , nn advance in soda , stnrch , dried
fruit and almost all classes of canned
goods. Cloves declined Be. Pickles de
clined Me. Shot has declined 15c. Duck-

In heavy hardware the only change dur
ing the week was nn advance of 10o on
