A Pronclior Thief nnd Lixtryor JJoo- tnror Free Love nnd tlio Soooiid Advent. TUB HOME OF TUB ARSAHSIN . CHICAOO , July 2. Acquaintances ot Chos. J. Oittoau. the assassin of President Garfield have been inter flowed by the ayont ot the National Associated Press , and the following facts learned concerning him : His first ospoaninco in this city was about twelve years a o , and at which time lie was practicing law , but his practice was not marked with much success. Shortly After that year he married tlio mstor of Qoorgo IScovillc , a prominent attorney this city. It took but a short time to prove that Giltaau was a tr.iud. Ho borrowed money wherever possible mid contracted bills promiscuously. About a ynar after his marriage ho suddenly left and for sometime noth ing was hoard of him. Ho returned again in 1870 , claiming that ho had lived an upright lifo tunco his abrupt departure , and also that he had been convortod. Ho identified himself with the young mon's Christian association , and began delivering lectures under the auspices of that association. These proved a failure nnd .lasted but a short time. It i.'was about this time his " manifested itself in "insanity sev eral ways. The most marked feature was ft scheme ho promulgated to buy out The Evening Mail newspaper. This delusion carried him so far that ho got out a prospectus fern n now paper which ho proposed to is sue after the Htylo of The Now York Herald. He contracted with Hoc for presses and with a telegraph company for dispatches , neither of which con tracts wore carried out. Ho quietly disappeared some four or five months ago unco which timu nothing has been soon of him hero. Ho was of French descent and had a generally crazy air about him. Ono of his marked pecu liarities consisted in brushing his utraight black hair directly back from his forehead. There is no doubt whatever - ever aa to his insanity. OUITEAD IN CHICAGO. CHICAGO , Juno 2 , In the rogues gallery - lory at.polico headquarters in this city , is a picture of Chan. J. Guitoau. Ho is described as a lawyer and theologian , five foot five and one-half inches tall light brown hair , blue oycs , light complexion , light brown board and mustacho. The picture was taken in 1877 , when ' ho was arrested for lar ceny. The criino consisted in collect ing money and failing to make proper returns. The matter was fixed up before the grand jury had opportuni ty to indict him. Miss Ada Sweety pension agent at this city relates an experience she once had with Guitoau. Ho wrote her a long rambling letter , making application for a position , saying he was a lawyer competent to fill any position under the government. Upon her refusal to employ him , ho said , "Perhaps you don't know who I am. " Ho then wont on to say ho wns a great proph et and religious revivalist , and it she did not give him u position she would 1)0 sorry. She then had him ejected from the ofiico. His parting observa tion was that ho always carried a re volver , Miss Swcot never hoard of him again until to-day , when ho flg- iired as would-be-assassinator of Pres ident Garfield. FUOM A I'AMILY BTANDPOIKT. CHICAGO , July 2. George Scovillo , Esq. , a well known attornoy-at-law in this city , gives the following sketch of Guitoau. Charles Julius Guitoau is my wife's youngest brother and is about 40 years of ngo. Ho was born in Ann Arbor , Mich. , or Freuport , Ills. , I don't know which. His fam ily moved to Freeport about 40 years ago. While quito young Charles , or Julius , as ho was called , was ambi tious in his ideas. Ho was sent to Ami Arbor , but becoming infat uated withtno doctrines of the Onuida community ho left college and joined them. Ho put nil his money , some $5,000 or $0,000 , info the commun I ity. Ho also became dissatisfied with that society. They were similarly af fected toward him bccauso lie would not work , but wanted to study the bible and religious works continually. After being with the Oneida community some four or five ypara ho ran away. I then assisted him with money. This supported him until the community had given him back part of the money ho had invested with thorn. With .this ho wont to New York and commenced to live in an attic on crackers nnd water until hu.chiimud to have discovered that this only was necessary tu support lifo and kept the reasoning faculties and spiritual senses in good order for commuicution with the Doity. Ho started u religious paper there for the purpose of con verting the world to his doctrines concerning - corning the second lulvont of Christ , which lie claimed had really taken place. Ho reached the nd of hia credit in Now York in 1809 and ave up the paper and came on to Chicago. He made such a failure of law practice that he finally confined himself to soliciting and do ing collecting business. The News BOOH got after him and made it so hot for him by exposing his crookedness in the collecting business that ho left town again , went to Nen York , where ho was at ono time fully shown np in The Herald. Ho again appeared on . the Bceno claiming to have experienced u change of heart. Ho soon became puffed up with his own importance und began advertising himself as "Tho lawyer , theologian and loctur-i or , " This frequently got him into difficulty with owners of halls ho had engaged to deliver lectures in , as none came to hoar him , in fact , he was consUnly getting into trouble of uomo kind or other. I have always considered him iiuano , but harmless , though on ono occasion I remember ho did ruiso on me and threatened to kill hU sister , my wife. I persuaded her not to ns ho would have been all the moro dangerous an enemy if ho should get out. Ho would rather die than do manual labor. His hobby was to lecture , talk , dream nnd to study. I can im- ftgino no reason for his attack on President Garfiold. Although ho was no politician ho always voted the re publican ticket HIS ( 'AnKHH AT MIL1TAUKBR. MILWAUKIIK , July 2. A gentleman of this city says : " 1 was quite well ac quainted with Guitcnu. His name is Charles Guitcnu. During the winter of 1878-70 ho had n desk in my office in this city nnd attempted to practice law hero. Ho had but little business and seemed very poor. Though it was winter ho wont about with only n thin summer coat on. Ho won not a for eigner as reported , but I think ho was of French descent I used to regard him as a little insane in that respect. Ho had some theory in regard to the erotcrio meaning of the Bible and claimed that it was then generally - ally understood aright. Sometimes ho would sit the whole day in the of fice nnd road the Bible. When I en tered the office , I sometimes found , him on his knees in prayer. Ho also published Homo pamphlets on re ligious subjects , which wore kept for sale at the bookstores. Ho was n good deal at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian association , and took part in the weekly prayer meetings there. I regarded him as n harmless follow , but very eccentric. Ho had Bomo business , as after ho loft the city parties used to cull for him oc casionally in regard to matters they had intrusted to him. Among those who know Gittenu is Judgp Mallory , in whoso court ho had practiced for some time. The judge stated that ho was a tall , swarthy , ill- natured looking fellow , who was now entirely sane. In the municipal court it was stated that ho was known as the defender of vile women , and was never known to have had a respectable - spoctablo client. Ho was , in every sense 6f the word , a pettifogger. The reporter was shown his attorney's card , and the following is a reproduc tion of it : "Charls J. Gittcau , Law- oor , Milwaukee , \Vis. Successful at tention given to any kind of law busi ness. Ton years practice in Now York and Chicago. " Another person who know liim while hero was Adolph Hermann , a prac ticing attorney. Ho describes him as a dark and swarthy looking individual who was evidently troubled with hy pochondria , and was full of all manner of visions concerning every imagina ble subject. While hero he was bus ied a portion of the time writing a book on morals. His mind evidently went by contraries , for ho was known throughout the city as n vicious , wild character. His place of busincs was , however , afterward changed from Broadway to Wisconsin street , where ' 10 remained several months. He finally loft the city having , it is un dorstopd , boon debarred from prac- ' icing in the courts. The next place ho struck was Chicago cage , and what ho did there , and what ho did afterwards is not known lore. His acquaintance was limited , : or howas , not a man to make friends. OUITKAU'rt MOTIVKH. WASHINOTON , D. 0. , July 3. Guitoau Htated to a reporter that papers respecting the motives loading o the crime , himself , his family , lis origin , his ideas everything con cerning all concerned , could bo found in a bundle addressed to Byron Andrew and loft with tho'newsdealer n the Baltimore & Potomac depot. Ho further said that thcsn papers were for the information of the public of Washington and Chicago , and that from thqm ho desired the accounts to bo obtained. At the news stand in the depot it was ascertained that such were deposited there for a few min utes and not called for again. The papers nnd parcels were taken to Mayor Brock and subsequently to Col. Corkhill , district attorney , who refused to make'them ' public. A KKMINIHCl'.NCK. It is worthy of note to state that some two or three weeks ago Guitoau wont to the jail for the purpose of vis iting it , but was refused admittance on the ground that it was not visitors' day. Ho at that time mentioned his name as Guiteau and said ho came from Chicago. When broupht to the jail to-day ho was admitted by the officer who had previously refused to allow him to enter , and mutul recog nition took plnco , Guitean remarking , "You are the man who wouldn't lot mo go through the jail some time ngo. " The only other remark lie made before being place in his cell was that General Sherman would ar rive at the juil soon , Tlio two jailors who nro now guarding his cell state that they have soon him around the jail several times recently and that on ono occasion ho appeared to bo under the influence of liquor. On ono of his visits subsequent to the first ono mentioned the officers Bay that Guiteau succeeded in reaching tlio rotunda of tlw building , where ho was noticed examining the scaffold from which the Hirth murdororu wore hanged. Pursuant ( , to his orders from the attorney general the officer in charge of the jail declined to ive any further information , nor would ho statp in what cell the prisoner was confined. This officer was an atten dant at the old city jail at the time of the assassination of President Lin coln. , Tbo State of Trade. Nr.\v YOIIK , July ti.
