The Way EnRllah Girl * Do.
Why do not the girls of to-day ho-
como their own drossinaki-rs' Tliuy
would find nil extraordinary stimulus
iiil pleasure in the occupation , and
there is nothing that would do more
to take thu notfciisu out of them and
put Bt'iisu in its proper place. Paper
patterns and the shortening of skirts
liavo niado the task easy , and unco
undertaken it would not ho given up ,
for it would ho more intorestinj ; than
fancy work. Proh.ihly the uuluci'incnt
to uianv would ho much groalcr if the
custom of giving girls an allowance for
"dress" money was common here as
it is in England. Hut unfortunately
it is not , and the majoiity of the
daughters of well-to-do fathers feel
that the effort will not hi > appreciated.
Young women whose parents oc
cupy high position in Kngland
frequently do all their own newing
in order to maku their allowance
( which ranges from 850 to Si'oO per
annum ) do its work. They have one
dress in a season made hy adreasmalc-
ur , not inoro ; mid this will prohahly
he Hiiporintended hy a dressmaker in
the house , who occupies her time in
cutting and fitting , while the young
lady , with , perhaps , the help of a fam
ily seamstress , does the sowing. There
is a great advantage in thus becoming
acquainted with methods and person
ally conversant with ways and means ,
with the exigencies and necessities of
work , its limitations as well as itn pos
sibilities. A good noivant would in
finitely rather work tor a mistress who
was thoroughly acquainted with the
duties to ho performed , and therefore
willing to make allowances ; and , on
the same principal , it is easier making
a dress to satisfy one who knows
than one whoso ignorance nmkes her
ut once exacting and nou-appreeiativo ,
